I believe Barrett when he says he isn't a racist. I don't believe him when he says he doesn't know why he used that language, though. He did it because the article and Gates pissed him off by disrespecting his profession and falsely crying racism. Gates turned it into a racial issue, so Barrett fed into it. He acted "stupidly" as Obama would put it, but this got more attention than it deserved.

Professor Gates opened the door and gave the police officer his identification, and the cop should have explained the situation, said good day, and walked away, regardless if Gates was screaming at him. A police officer's needs to be mature and not let their ego get the best of them. If you slightly think about it, a police officer has a lot of power by carrying a gun, taser,baton...etc. You need to be an exceptional person to handle the responsiblity of being an officer.
