Like most people, I'd never heard anything by Harvey Danger except for "Flagpole Sitta." This song is pretty damn good, unfortunately it seems like it was just released at the wrong time. Had it been released today, I think it probably would have fared better amongst some of the more "indie" rock acts with keyboards that are popular.
@Revitandgo I still have that one. Never hooked up my N64 to it, got it just a few years ago. I didn't get any new systems (I grew up with the NES being my only system) until the PS2 had been out for a few years, and I had always hooked that up to a different VCR we were using at the time.
I just stayed up to 1:30 AM looking up bands. Some were very not very enjoyable, to say the least, so it's a damn good thing I ended with these guys. They made the last three hours worth it.
I think Harvey Danger's "King James Version" album is similar to Weezer's "Pinkerton" in that it was hugely under appreciated when it was released, but as time goes on it will develop an grow underground following, when people realize they had a lot more than "Flagpole Sitta" to offer.
@AdRichBiatch Wish it had happened for them before they called it quits. I totally bought "Where Have All the Merrymakers Gone?" because I heard Flagpole Sitta on the radio... Then it turned out they were one of my favorite bands.
Have to wonder what would have happened if Flagpole Sitta were released during the internet and file-sharing era. Maybe they would have caught their break.
"The Marlboro man died of cancer and he wasn't a rocket scientist when he was healthy, ha ha ha" Such a bitingly funny line, but there's also something so incredibly sexy about how he says it, heh.
this is great, i've only watched it once and i'm hooked. how many bands can you say that about that are around right now? NONE i'll bet. did talent disappear along with the 90's?
They made several catchy songs with memorable lyrics. It is kind of frustrating how many talented artists will end up with the One-Hit-Wonder status (their dedicated fans will deny it across the board, but they are) while other performers with far less talent will become enduring artists. Oh well. Showbiz is a bitch.
harveys music was good but his look wasent right the 90s were coming to an end and music like this was being targted for extermination to make way for more rap music and the brittneys and cristina girl wannabes thats why there music never got big.
This song used to irritate the sh*t out of me when it was in regular rotation. I loved Flagpole Sitta so much, and just didnt get this songs vibe. But looking back on it, Its a pretty damn catchy song, especially compared to the sh*t those same stations play nowadays.
What really makes both songs work for me is knowing their other stuff. Their poetic-ish style, all that, it just allows you to see it as more than just a catchy tune, but a great HD track.
your right... good point, "no real ending"... yeah that's about it... but, you know what?... I've seen a lot of "based on real events" movies (you know.. movies that "really happened") and they are all REALLY boring... I mean, appart from the WWII movies that dont count because they are all the same, THIS movie showed something real, in the most fantastic way posible, that's a little hard to achieve dont you think?,
that girl in the video is so beautiful, she was Diane Court in 1989's "Say Anything"...I think her real name is Ione Skye. She did a great job on the video, and I absolutely adore this band. They really "stick it to the man". They are the reason why I do what I want to do in my life.
you're so right. not to mention this is one of the most underrated videos ever made. i can assure you that the only reason it didn't get a lot of publicity is because it didn't have boobs in the camera like everything else on MTV. this gets a five; and you get a thumbs up.
This whole album got caught in the implosion/consolidation of the music industry. I didn't realize that they even got budget for a video.
I did some work to get their website ready for this release, and my understanding is that I was lucky that I got paid by the label. Apparently the check was cut as their label was getting reorged out of existance for a second time.
These guys may be quirky, but the lyrics are quite clever, the music in most of their songs is very catchy, and they still hold their own for being an indie band with the guts to offer their album (including artwork) for a free download from their website because they are confident that once people hear the album they'll either buy it, spread the word about them, or both. Good marketing AND good fan loyalty. You don't find that alot anymore, so much respect for H.D.!
Truth be told, everyone is entitled to their opinion. To each their own. However as a musician who knows many other musicians...you would be surprised to discover how many famous bands out today have been influenced by Harvey Danger. They have inspired a lot of people...so before you knock them, ask yourself... how many people have you inspired?

3 facts about Ione Skye:
1. She's got one of the most beautiful faces in the world.
2. Her father is the singer/songwriter, extrordinaire, Donovan Leitch
3.She has really nice tits, which can be seen displayed prominently in the first part of the movie "Four Rooms". ...that's about it.
