I love those spiders. Unlike some, they build a web and they stay put. Just so long as they don't make one in a walk way they're fine. Even then, after you knock the web down they'll just build it someplace else.
I think that's an Orb Weaver. I've got one outside my window that looks about the same. She's gotten a little bigger in the past week or so. I'm glad you let the poor thing escape, she looks scared! D:
