I enjoy your videos and your enthusiasm, but realistically I am a bit disappointed in the food grown in these raised beds. One harvest would wipe them out and harvesting one bed would feed a person only a couple of days if they tried to survive solely on the food from the bed. How many square feet of raised bed does it take to feed a person if that is the only source of food?
We are working on getting our garden ready for some winter vegetable gardening. We live in southwestern Missouri in the Ozarks so we might be able to get some lettuces and garlic going right now.
Malbar is NOT frost tolerant. Its a tropical perenial vegetable - in Hawaii or South Florida. I have some in the unheated greenhouse to see if I can get it to grow thru the winter here.
John, not to judge the Dervaes family, but their copyrighting of the words 'urban homestead' is a big turn off for me. You are awesome, and although a lot of us were inspired by that family, I hope we are all more like you :)
With regards to the Dervaes family, I was initially inspired by them too. But I cannot stand the mindset of being elitist and protective of your "secret" methods. We are all on the same path, and anything you can do to help someone become more self sufficient is a gift to them and to all mankind. As far as I am concerned, you are the anti-dervaes. You're so open and honest, and on a quest for truth. You have truly inspired me, and I cannot thank you enough for that.
I guess if the Dervaes family gets more interview requests than they have time for, they're forced to choose which interviews are the best investment of their time.Still, it's a bummer you couldn't interview them.I'd like to see someone do more than just a quick tour of their garden, which you see on every single interview with them.I'd like to see more "how to" interview, like you said.
By the way...did you ask the plot owners before you munched on their produce? ;-)
hey John great vid. Im just dieing to ask only because you seem to eat everything you see. have you even eaten something you thought was addible but afterwards found out it was not?
Hi John! My husband thinks I'm crazy because I want to do what you do! Just FYI: it's illegal to grow cotton in Georgia without a license. Something to do with the bol weevil.
Thanks john for doing an episode here in las vegas where i reside. i started my first raised bed garden fall/winter garden because of you. i just harvested kale, spinach, green and red leaf lettuce and cilantro. the basil didn't survive. the bounty was yummy. i juiced the kale and made salads with the rest. you are truly inspirational.
always love your videos! hey you should go check out path to freedom urban homestead they are located in Pasadena California your goals are really alike! I would love to see you do a video about them
I did contact them when I was traveling in Southern California. They denied me an interview. Probably because Im not CNN or something. I would like to do an interview with them, but was dismayed they would turn down someone on a similiar path. That experience made me work harder to ensure my videos always teach and help people. I was inspired by them originally,as they show what they do, but they leave out the "how". So Im here to be the HOW. Thank You for viewing my videos!
Fantastic Video - Thanks John! I live in Albuquerque and the weather seems to be similar to Las Vegas if not a little colder. Anyhow I was inspired by your videos to start my own raised beds for gardening about two weeks ago. I've been growing wheatgrass and sprouts in my home for 15 years or so and never thought about the possibilities of gardening all the other good green stuff outside until coming across your videos. Your videos have been eye opening to say the least. Keep u updated.
Yes, you can juice kale. It can be "strong' and some juicers will make a higher yield than others when juicing leafy greens. Its best to "work up to" drinking alot of green leaf juices. Start off by making 1/4 of the glass green leaf juices, and the other 3/4 a blend of any of the following: carrots, celery, cucumber, romaine lettuce hearts and apples. Then work your way up. Another good way to use your greens is to blend them into a green smoothie. - basically greens, bananna and water.
@growingyourgreens . Thanks . I buy all my greens that I juice at the store in the winter and I would realy like to grow my own greens year around . Im glad I found your channel . I love it .
Thank you for your videos! But... it's definitely not "really cold" :). It's something between warm and cold :). We here in North (Estonia) have a cold... -15 Celsius + appr 1 meter of snow :). And sun only a 4-5 hours a day and very low (sun is not raising above trees this time of a year). So we can't grow anything outside now :). But something will grow on windowsill, very slowly, but at least something.
john, i love your field trips! It gives me more ideas of what i can grow during the different seasons. Even though i live in the gulf coast region of Ms, your videos have helped me tremendously! keep up the great work and thanks for everything!
which of the Brassica Family: Kales Collards are best, maybe biggest, as wraps to present food in - like tortillas, Nori with Sushi etc... Or even outside the Brassicas you can recommend?
Ps. if your going for your YouTube Partnership the first 300 views (that count towards video views) can be from same source i.e, if you refresh the page 300x's first you'll have 300 before anyone even sees itI know bends the rules yet common; i think can also work with making private before public :p

The malabar spinach doesn't do well in winter, right? I just went outside and it all didn't survive the last few cold nights. I live in TX.

good stuff. You can improve your sound by learning to use compression to reduce the variations in volume.
