It could also be that they were too cheap to finish off the elevator, and it's nothing more than ugly masonite walls (I'd rather look at those anyhow). The "Gallagher Building" one had those up since day one, when it was installed in 2001. Still does (in the video). Looking at the walls on this one, it's probably a little of both to protect it, and to hide the el-cheapo factor.
Dude, go to your classes! The custodians were probably moving some furniture or equipment recently, thus the cushions. The rumbling was probably the wheels rubbing against the railing.... needs grease. The damn elevator is not a deathtrap.... At least you did not die from it.
That cushion stuff is to prevent damage to the elevator when they wheel carts and stuff. Though last I checked, you aren't supposed to leave those up all the time, only when you are moving items.
Protection is even more precise in Hong Kong. Wooden cardboards have to be nailed to the elevator car walls before transportation of construction stuff is carried out.
I would imagine the wallpaper and the blankets are just deterrents to prevent any stupid people from vandalizing or destroying/vandalizing the elevator.
hahahahahaha i made a video of that elevator hahahhahaha its still does the same thinG ahhhhh dats cool....

It's lucky you did spot the sound of the propulsion drive starting up as you pressed the outside call button to activate the elevator.
