  • CVT is not a "gearbox". The type of continuously variable transmission Nissan uses contains two opposing conical spires. Power is transferred from the one connected to the engine (input shaft) to the one connected to the differential (output shaft) by two hemispherical heads (the same shape as the dodge hemi engines use for the pistons) which displace laterally in order to either increase or decrease the ratio of the speed of the engine to the speed of the output shaft.   • @lbcctenor08 Not in the Murano. The Murano uses a traditional steel belt and two variable pulley sheaves.

    The longitudinal CVT that Nissan used had toroid and rollers.

  • I own a 2005 Murano and after being impressed by the 3.5L and CVT I bought a 2008 Maxima. It's the best combo for a daily driver!

  • i dont know a lot about how a CVT actually works, but im not a fan of the constant rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr­rrrrrrrrrrrrrrr without the nice sound a gear change, nor do i like how it just stays in such a high RPM the whole time, im guessing the trans is built so that it doesnt hurt it or cause any kind of damage?

  • Nissan is starting to make me angry because they are starting to make certain models with a CVT transmission. They do not sell these certain models with regular automatic transmissions. The altima does sell have the option of a 6-speed manual, not sure about other models. This CVT transmission has so many problems. Other make's that have models with CVT transmissions do have the option of having a regular transmission but they would have to reprogram the whole car computer.

    A lot of unproven nonsense is out there concerning CVT problems. Nissan has recently extended their CVT warranty to 10 years on their vehicles as a statement of confidence. All the major manufacturers are following with their own CVT designs, or soon will be. Test drive and you will see how how CVT works and is a significant improvement. I just bought a 2010 Sentra with $3500 cash rebate and the thing drives better than my 2002 V6 Altima 3.5SE. Tremendous value.

  • cvt is hardly being improved on......it's the best shit to come...... smooth gear change nice balance between power and speed all the time and good efficiency

  • i drove a 06 murano saturday and floored it til about 120 and i did not feel the gear change at all, i thought i messed up the tranny

  • Yes. CVT are snowmobile-like transmissions. No gear, only a kind of clutch that always slip. I personally hate these type of transmission.. but I Love muranos

  • i got me a 07 murano dont particularly like it but it will take me up to 115 mph (all i had time to do) but will not redline unless in low i think it goes faster when u go L then S then D. HATE the CVT

  • hyundai santafe? it sucks u.u got one for almost a year. Mileage is really short, not so comfortable (yeah, even thought it has some really nice stuff, sits are not that comfortable). Sold it after the engine started mal-functioning.....really, really hated that car ¬¬

  • Dont make that mistake! Murano is faster,lighter,more fuel efficiant than the CX plus the CX has the DVT tranny which is 2X worse than a CVT

  • Better fuel economy because it keeps very low rpm, unless you hit the pedal... And better acceleration, because there arent any gear changces, only one gear... sorry for bad english ;)

  • Why does it take so long to redline? In a regular transmission you'd redline around 60 km not 100 km.

  • any of you guys ever ride a snowmobile? You'd know exactly why the CVT works so well. As was mentioned in another post, the gearing can compensate for lower torque, but really it's the power that is key. I would not be surprised if they tuned this engine specifically for this transmission.

  • lol But what I really meant by tuning it has to do with a more peaked power curve for higher specific efficiency at the max hp rpm, rather than detuning the output for transmission durabiity. Makes me wonder just how much torque and hp the CVT can really take, hehe.

  • the cvt is a whole different system of transmission, no gears and set speeds like you have with automatic/manual.

    cvt is amazing i think..even tho it may not be as fun its definitely more efficient

    as far as the engine goes..it should be fine as long as they made a good car

  • dominikwys, you are right, running an engine at 6000RPMs is not good for an engine, even in short acceleration bursts in any conventional transmission. The CVT is the cause of it staying in this 6000RPM range, and although this ultimately allows for faster acceleration by keeping the engine in the most powerful part of its power band, the engine does not like not it and definitely does not want to be running right up near the redline for extended periods of time.

  • Maybe it works more efficiently at max torque, but it gets the max power at the rpm of highest hp.

    You could have an engine with the same torque at 3000 and 6000 rpm (hypothetically). To get the most power, you run it in the gear that lets the engine move at 6000 rpm because that gear has twice as much leverage as the gear that would let it run at 3000. The torque to the wheels would be twice as much.

    The physics make sense.

  • cvt, continuously variable transmission - instead of a set of gears with set ratios the transmission variates the gear ratio as the car accelerates.

  • the murano uses a CVT transmission. that means that it continuously changes the gear ratios. so think of it as if there are an infinite amount of gears. this way, it can stay at maximum horsepower while its accelerating.

  • It is a CVT (continuously variable transmission).

    Other makers are using them to like Audi, Honda & Lexus.

    Not a big fan of them to be honest.....sounds and feels like a slipping clutch.
