In any case, I believe that the 3 cards Matt picked out at the beginning were not the 3 cards revealed at the end of the trick. In reality, it didn't matter what 3 random cards Matt chose, they would eventually be switched out anyways. Derren simply chose 3 cards ahead of time, switched Matt's cards for those cards, and used subliminal messaging to get Matt to guess those 3 pre-picked cards, allowing the payoff at the end to work.

When Derren turns the card face up at the beginning of the trick, Matt is already in a sensitive state and subconsciously makes a photographic imprint of the locations of each card in his mind, so Matt subconsciously knows where each card is. The cameras don't show Derren's hands during this, so he may be messing with the cards and we can't see it. Matt surely doesn't see it because he's been told to ignore it.

To go a step further, the reason a handshake interrupt works is because when you go to shake a person's hand, they expect to do just that; shake hands. But, if you interrupt that program, you can insert another set of instructions, like having the person put their hand of their head and relax. You're replacing one response to a handshake cue with another one. It's all in the timing and making sure it seems natural and not awkward.

Alrightit works like this:
