As a young teen in Canada I saw a book in my brother's room called, "Hitler and My Part In His Downfall." I became a Spike fan forevermore. A wonderful madman.
A pig of a face looked out the window, "What do ya want?" said the pig of a face. "Ah, 'tis the lovely Mrs O'Tool. I was looking for a bit of liquid libation." "Piss Off", said the lovely Mrs O'Tool! (From memory so forgive the inaccuracies) Spike, I loved you so much. Your wit, madness & humanity made my world seem normal and made me feel stoned, and not a blade of grass in sight! Ya bollox for dying! Very selfish of you, but we'll argue that over a Guinness when I meet ya:-)
Spike Milligan, alive and well in my head. My head must preserved in perpetuity. In this particular case, perpetuity means, lots of tea and buns, interspersed with nice dinners and waitresses. And a cat, I like cats.
you don't get better than the old skool english comedy actors! any one of them have shaped comedy of today... what a classic...R.I.P. spike you are surely missed sir.. all the best mate x x
Wouldn't it be nice if we all had a piece of Spike in us
I saw him live/standup, whatever, in 1984 and I thought he was old then. But I have never laughed so much in my life. And don't forget the music. Part of the show was his jazz trio. And music was always a big part of the Goons and his life. Geldrays band was top notch, stands up today.
I first remember seeing him on the box when I was about 10, around the the time of this. He would have been in his early 50's then, as I subsequently found out. I always thought that he was much younger, especially in the days of Q8 etc in the late 70's. He had a youthful, manic demeanour, his cracked originality and over active off centre mind made the man seem closer to being a bit of a crazy teenager than an older fellow.
I know it's frowned upon for comedians to start corpsing but it never fails to crack me up when Spike (almost always) starts sniggering during his own sketches. He's got such an infectious laugh!
Ah Spike what can you say..... not alot ..I live a few miles where he rests in a small place called Winchelsea in E Sussex. I have visited the grave a few times...for money,, but no . But the thing that makes me laugh is that he got his wish for his Head Stone (but in the Garlic) See told you I was I ll (Don't seem funny anymore )The other thing being as a cat haolic he faces daily a prod church (His grave position) and he's under a tree. Thank you
I might be missing something of a deeper and more intellectual nature here, but I think that, in typical Spike fashion, the reference is not political, but social. The whole gist of the latter part of this sketch relates to the most idiomatic of British police shows/programme - 'Dixon of Dock Green'. There is no punchline as such, the imitation simply relates to something which was deeply British (and stood for a time gone by). I don't pick up anything political, but am happy to be corrected....
I was talking about the part with the farmer, and it being a "partly political broadcast on part of the Torre party"
For example Monty Python did a "silly party/sensible party sketch" where the names were long and included parts of songs and a gunshot. I learned later that some poeple to make fun of the court system in the UK legally change their names to include crazy stuff to make court officials and judges look stupid(as a form of protest).I though of a connection there.
It's telling that there are only positive postings about Spike here. I guess thats because his legacy is that he left us all smiling. Would that we could all say that about ourselves!
Rubbish,,,that Milligan was an insane bi-polar maniac who deliberately caused multiple heart attacks via his "humour" : a dangerous man. He should of been stopped years ago !!

The best way to understand Spike Milligan is as follows:
1. Read one of his books while on your holidays.
2. Try not to laugh otherwise your companions will ask you what's so funny.
3. If you do laugh try to explain - you won't be able to.
4. Try not to laugh again. Now you have it.
