Unrelated: Why do so many people think he's using "James" as Pluto's actual name at the beginning? Can't you see the put on pose and hear the inflection in Mickey's tone? He's making a reference to the fact that Pluto is acting like a butler or servant. It's meant as a sort of joke between friends. Though a lot find his crying funny, I do feel bad for him when he does so in this episode. You can tell he only wants to please his master and retrieve the paper. Even in the episode's closing moments, all it took was for one dirty look from Mickey and that was enough to set him off again even if Mickey laughed and hugged him anyway. Exaggerrated, yes but still very touching moment.

And if you want to know how kinky people were back then just look at some of the stag films or sexual novelties that were created in the 20's and 30's.
