That's gotta be some of the best phrasing and most perfect pitch control I've ever heard in a live recording!... Ella was a genious and will always be remembered
A MASTERPIECE!! There will NEVER be another singer like Ella! She was one of a kind! There are not enough words that I can say that can do this woman justice.
@santiagoangeles show some respect you miserable cretin!!! she is perfectly fine looking to me, she may not be overly glamorous but hell most of us are not. She was a gift to this world in her musical ability.
@rankingtrevor the words "ugly women" sound too strong, maybe "not too cute" sounds better and i never said anything negative about her musical hability...
@santiagoangeles Ella is not ugly. She might not be your model type singer but she is not ugly and she is not a "not so cute" woman. She is Ella and she is beautiful!
I am always in a far away moment when listening to Ella...I am a singer from Detroit and I am inspired by her. I listen to her songs all day everyday and her spirit and music is beautiful and symphonic I am thankful for her....Lady Ella Fitzgerald
If it gets any better than this, I've never heard it. And for all you young folks who may perchance listen to this, Ella never lip-sync'd a note in her life.
Solid performance from a 1966 Andy Williams show. Andy had been trying to get her on the show for years, and this was, I believe, her only appearence there.
I can see why Andy Williams was trying hard to get Ella Fitzgerald on his show and thank goodness he did because if he hadn't we would have never heard this beautiful and exceptional performance from the First Lady of Jazz.
Actually, there is a clip on YT of her second appearance and her duet with Andy Williams. And, if you don't mind, the performance is not solid. Its amazing ;)
DAMN!! Absolute (human) perfection seems to be eluding us more and more in present-day realms of 'pop' culture. All one (who is striving to 'make it' anywhere) should require is to- just LISTEN to this one clip!... See how it is done most perfectly- and only hope your ass can deliver a small fraction of her (not only) natural but (honestly -and assiduously) acquired talent....Rest my case
I have watched this a million times and still I am blown away when Ella sings"Someday he'll come and dry all my tears and whisper sweeeeetttttt little things in my ear"..The way she glides into the high notes is what real singing is all about. Ella was a complete singer!!
the acoustics sound good to me - I like the natural re-verb. If you notice, Ella knows exactly when to move her mouth slightly away from the mike for a more distant sound. This performance is a master class in pitch, enunciation, phrasing, and just all-around proper form. She sings completely correct, totally from the diaphragm, which is why you see none of that awful Whitney Houston jaw wiggling during vibrato.
@chupaciupss - I don't understand how you think that a recognition of Whitney Houston's "jaw wiggling" has anything to do with "knowing the real Whitney".
@mrlopez2681 you're talking about ella's technique wich is great.... and you also said that whitney's awful.... my conclusion was that you don't know the best of whitney :)
omg i think she was the best singer in the world ever her pitch and the way she sing is like heaven and have never been done on her level since then. She is a true vocal master and this proformance is timeless .......RIP MISS ELLA
i know this is going to sound strange but from 4:00 to 4:18 you can almost see rays of light shining down on Ella singing with her heavenly voice. Maybe it is the gods showing their appreciation!
Nothing on earth like "Television Ella-" that bejeweled period in the mid-1960's when network musical variety series were fighting to get her on their shows. It seems Andy Williams and Dinah Shore won out the most. Brava!!
This song has left me unable to breathe for like a minute... such a beautiful and powerful performance from the best vocalist of all time. Rest in peace Ella!

This is fabulous - just like everyone else has written. I don't remember seeing it on TV. Anyhow, I saw her in person in Munich, Germany in 1962. The Germans appreciated her also - definitely!!
I actually gasped upon finding this. Only saw this performance in part in the opening of the AMERICAN MASTERS bio on Ella. Now that I've seen it restored, I can confirm my initial prediction: it's absolutely gorgeous, like its singer. Thank you.
Sublime!
