Please make some more videos of this Astro; they were always one of my favorite trucks; there used to be a GMC dealership just minutes from where I grew up so I used to see lots of new and used Astros, Generals, 9500's pulling in and out of the garage and parking lot; some of the straight piped ones with Detroits I could even hear from my house! So seeing this Astro brings back lots of memories
Wait a minute. Wait just a damn minute! I call BS on this truck having a Detroit in it. there is no smoke, it cant be possible.
LOL! my hats off to the mechanic, a Detroit that barely smokes is quite a feat. Well maybe not that big a feat. But one thing is for sure, those bad boys were known to do two things: turn diesel fuel into music and drink oil. Kinda like a cast iron musician :-)
lol my old man is a mechanic and he told me a story once about detroits. He got a service call from a good customer and had to drive for a couple hours to get to where the guy broke down. Turns out the guy needed a brake chamber. So my dad took it off and found a parts store nearby. When he threw the oil soaked chamber up on the counter, the parts guy made a face and said, "He must be runnin' a detroit!"
If it wasnt for diesel being so expensive, i would of chosen the 8v silver 92. If i had a truck and i had a choice of any motor, it would be a 8v siler 92 or a 60 series. the 8v92 was a good running motor, u can burn a hole in the piston, you can still drive them home.
ya not a bad run that sled is one of the worst things to hook to im from alliance so if you want any pulls in the area let me know always willing to help
I will be making more videos of my Astro in the spring when I put the insurance coverage back on the truck. As I only drive the truck during the spring and summer months.
repowered with a silver a few years ago. The main difference I think was in the block. The green block had the waterways too close to the oilways and they cracked and got water in the oil. This happened to me and it wrecked the mains and the crank. The silver spaced them further apart
Strong Rig, My old man had a 1977 Kenworth K100 8V92TA, when I was a kid It was the fastest rig I ever rode in. When I was older I learned to drive stick on it 9spd fuller-
I pulled in 4th gear at about 2400 rpm,And the tire size is 24.5 tall rubber. This was my first time pulling this truck so I wasn't sure what gear to pull with. But the truck did really well for a stock truck. Next year I am going to install 110mm injectors.
I am still driving an old 78 astro with an 8v71. Put 30,000 miles on it in the last 12 months.

It seems to me that diesel engines are a lot more reliable then gas and in general seem to run for 200,000 miles and up. Why is that?

Question: What do you do when your Detroit stops leaking oil?
Answer: Get it fixed!
aeroshine 3 years ago 2
Pour more oil in it!

I had a KW with a green 8V92 445 which I
repowered with a silver a few years ago. The main difference I think was in the block. The green block had the waterways too close to the oilways and they cracked and got water in the oil. This happened to me and it wrecked the mains and the crank. The silver spaced them further apart
gm16v149 4 years ago 6
you are correct. they moved the oil gallies away from the water ports were they move from the block into the heads.

4.11 is tall, what is the tranny gear.. with tall tires a 4.11 would not be that low i would think
