So true and I say it all the time too. I am a weight loss coach and I eat before going to bed almost every day. A calorie surplus is a bit more likely to get stored at night, but when in balance or a deficit it makes absolutely no difference when you eat! None!
I was watching a documentary on Sumo wrestlers that said they like to take a nap right after they eat so they gain more subcutaneous fat than they normally would since if they were awake then they would be burning more calories. I think there's more factors to this
this is forgetting about insulin spikes if you take in to many refined carbs before bed. Yes if you still maintain a calorie deficit you'll lose WEIGHT but most likely it won't be FAT. When your insulin is spiked your body tends to hold on to its fat stores and if its not getting energy from fat its going to go for proteins in your muscles. The timing of your meals is important as to what type of carbs to eat and when.
hi steve, my name is frank i'm 5'7 hight and i'm 34 years old my weight is 147 lbs i want to gain weight but i can't. in the morning i eat junk food at work like MacDonals or jack in the box etc. i get home like around 6 and go to buy like a meat burrito. i rarely exercise may be its why i don't gain weight please advice !!!

Hi Steve. I am 28yrs old & 5"8 male weighing in @ 114 kg I used to do a lot of sport some years ago but stopped when I moved house, now I cycle all the time but do not seem to loos anything even when I am calorie counting ? @sammohung82 i was obese on the bmi calculator and am now at a normal weight, i started running like this.. week 1 Run 3 mins walk 1 min repeat 6 times (do 3 times a week) week 2 Run 5 mins walk 2 mins repeat 4 times (do 3 times a week) after that i just ran flatout for 1/2 hour, now im doing half marathons once a week and 7 1/2 miles 3 times a week, its just perseverence you WILL get there (oh yeah and buy GOOD running shoes). if you want any more advice inbox me.

are you aware of recent studies that show the relationship between grehlin, leptin and REM sleep?
the short of it is that you have difficulty entering REM sleep if you don't have enough ghrelin. and that during REM sleep you produce more leptin to keep you from being hungry during the night. ultimately if you don't have enough REM sleep you will wake much hungrier that you would if you had a good nights sleep.
@stupidnamenoonecares so in effect not eating a few hours before sleeping will help you enter REM sleep which ultimately helps you control hunger issues.
better yet having a good nights sleep helps your overall mental state and helps in all your daily activities.
i don't eat any calories 4 hours before bed, to anyone else who cares i have been following this rule for a few months now and have seen a remarkable improvement in my attitude. lifes so much better if your ready for it.
During the night you are significantly less active than during your hours awake, even more significantly you are awake/asleep for a long period of time, so it does make a difference.

i dont think its a big problem with the eating before bed and fat thing but i think the problem comes with digestion. when your sleeping its rest time...your mind gets a good rest but if you eat before bed your body is digesting all night. thats why when you have a good nights sleep you can still be very tired when you wake up because your mind was sleeping but your body was working all night digesting food

Again bad advice. Eating before going to bed is not healthy. Why? Because when you sleep your body detoxifies. This is why if you don't sleep enough you increase the risk of cancer. If you ate something your body will be trying to digest the food when it should be trying to detoxify. Very bad advice.

I don't understand this ATP crap or whatever, people say you only have 5 or 8 seconds of it or something, if i'm wrong please correct me, but if I only have 8 seconds of it why am I even warming up and spending an hour in the gym :/, but i'm sure it doesn't work like that, anyways if you regain it or whatever from resting a few seconds, is it best to do set workouts instead of a routine, someone please bless me with knowledge :D
ATP is essentially the unit of energy that our body uses. Overall, our body is constantly producing ATP and in the average person, about 2kg of ATP are made/consumed in a day. ATP along with other components, drive the formation of glycogen in the muscles, which they love to utilize in order to move.within the muscle we have about 900kcal of glycogen that can be utilized by the muscle. Overall, you are not limited to 8 seconds of ATP overall, but possibly only to 8 seconds per rep.

i do understand now coz i eat at night .....but not heavy meals ...only healthy one like dried feags with green tea ...or macadamian nuts something like that ..
Why would having a healthy snack before bed spike your insulin? A healthy snack before bed is a VERY good idea. I have slice of Ezekial bread with almond butter heated in the microwave with spreadable fruit and a glass of skim milk. That's how I STAY lean.
this isnt entirely true, if you are trying to build muscle yo ushould have a constant protein intake because you need protein to build muscle and your body cant store protein.
Yes it is true. The body digests natural proteins like fish, chix and beef much more slowly and they last longer in the gut making them available for much longer periods. But the average lifter or muscle mag reader doesn't understand or believe this.
I do ten miles on my elliptical every day which allows me to eat ANYTHING and still lose weight. I also do isometrics on my abs, neck, shoulders and arms during my workout. Can you make a vid about penis exercise, care and health?
@TheyCallMeSnotty actualy that is untrue...you cant just eat ANYTHING....for example: cholesterol. Cholesterole isnt like fats . it doest break down..your will excrete 5% of it every excretion cycle...no more than 5% (unless you take drugs or medicines)
LOL...a ton of women believe that stuff! It's funny you say that because I've heard that a million times. I don't know what they're reading in those women's mags, but somebody's not doing there homework. I've dated some very educated women who then turn around and recite ideas about diet and body composition and weightloss that I swear are right out of the year 1935. I dated a girl that believed in the whole.." My body is Spoon or a Pear shape" idea, so they need to eat towards that bodytype.
All my girlfriends starve themselves at night because the believe the eating at night myth. But then they think doing weights will make their muscles grow huge, despite the fact they know I do weights and are always saying they wished they had a body like mine, aaaaahhhhhh!!!
I have an Almond butter sandwich on wheat bread with a glass of skim milk almost every night before bed. It keeps me satisfied and I sleep very well. This is one of the things that help me to stay lean.
I eat in the middle of the night almost every night, I wake up and if I dont eat anything i cant fall back a sleep,is that bad for me...Its probablly bad for my teeth I would guess, ive been maintaining my wieght even with doing this
I'm 5'11 and weigh 160. And i'm about 18% body fat. I eat about 1100 calories a day but strangley i never get hunger pangs or even feel hungry if i havn'e eaten in awhile. I almost have to force myself to eat. Is this normal and would drinking water while exercising trick youre stomach into thinking it's full.
ok, I have very little fat. ver very little. i want to get big (musculat). so i used to eat 2 bananas then 30 mins later a whey protein after workout. now i take waxy maze and glutamine in orange juice. should I go back to my older way (bananas)?
food is what makes you big. Lifting weight stimulates the process that makes you big. an increase in nervous impulses to muscles causes myohypertrohy. without food, muscles do not 'repair' and do not incorporate anything in them. Thus, food is DIRECTLY what gets you big. Lifting is what INDIRECTLY gets you big. Having said that, you MUST have both to get big. without either, you wont get big
lifting weights doesnt stimulate anything but ur hormones the reason u gain muscle when u lift are the muscle strands ripping and repairing themselves. thats why food is important because they give the nutrition needed to repair muscle. lifting weights is the DIRECT cause of the ripping muscle tissue and food is the indirect cause. think of ur body like a car and food is the fuel
@MattDurling you're right. it is very hard to draw the line. But it is a fact that lifting weight stimulates the 'repair' of muscle-->thus the gain. When lifting, there are a lot of nerve impulses to muscle fibers. Some will 'tear'...that is the stimulus...but the food wil actually MAKE the muscles!!! food is like the ingredient that fixes and makes the muscle cells. as for the hormones, I like to think of them as the stimulus to 'directing' and 'allowing' the food to fix that muscle.
Any function of the body will use calories. Whether it's the digestive system, the respitory system, you name it. The body repairs itself and uses a few extra calories daily to accomplish this. It will even take calories from stored fat to do this. 90% of muscle building and training is done in the gym. Food, excess food or whatever is NOT the main driver in muscle gain.
Actually, the difference is that when you go to sleep insolence levels are low and when your in your office in the day your insolence is higher. Because your insolence is low at night or when you sleep to be more specific, carbs[both simple carbs(sugar) and complex carbs(low glycemex carbs)] will not be used for energy and stored as fat.
Let me correct my self a little here... it's not necessarily insolence (unless your diabetic) but the fact that once carbs are "shuttled into cells" so to speak, if they are not used than they are simply converted into fat.
So true and I say it all the time too. I am a weight loss coach and I eat before going to bed almost every day. A calorie surplus is a bit more likely to get stored at night, but when in balance or a deficit it makes absolutely no difference when you eat! None!

are you aware of recent studies that show the relationship between grehlin, leptin and REM sleep?
the short of it is that you have difficulty entering REM sleep if you don't have enough ghrelin. and that during REM sleep you produce more leptin to keep you from being hungry during the night. ultimately if you don't have enough REM sleep you will wake much hungrier that you would if you had a good nights sleep.
ghrelin = hunger hormone
leptin = satiety hormone
stupidnamenoonecares 1 year ago
@stupidnamenoonecares so in effect not eating a few hours before sleeping will help you enter REM sleep which ultimately helps you control hunger issues.
better yet having a good nights sleep helps your overall mental state and helps in all your daily activities.
i don't eat any calories 4 hours before bed, to anyone else who cares i have been following this rule for a few months now and have seen a remarkable improvement in my attitude. lifes so much better if your ready for it.
stupidnamenoonecares 1 year ago
During the night you are significantly less active than during your hours awake, even more significantly you are awake/asleep for a long period of time, so it does make a difference.

i dont think its a big problem with the eating before bed and fat thing but i think the problem comes with digestion. when your sleeping its rest time...your mind gets a good rest but if you eat before bed your body is digesting all night. thats why when you have a good nights sleep you can still be very tired when you wake up because your mind was sleeping but your body was working all night digesting food

soulplatos 1 year ago
Again bad advice. Eating before going to bed is not healthy. Why? Because when you sleep your body detoxifies. This is why if you don't sleep enough you increase the risk of cancer. If you ate something your body will be trying to digest the food when it should be trying to detoxify. Very bad advice.

It's not really how much you eat as it's what you eat. You can eat unlimited amounts of greens all day and still run a calorie deficit.

Help Please
I don't understand this ATP crap or whatever, people say you only have 5 or 8 seconds of it or something, if i'm wrong please correct me, but if I only have 8 seconds of it why am I even warming up and spending an hour in the gym :/, but i'm sure it doesn't work like that, anyways if you regain it or whatever from resting a few seconds, is it best to do set workouts instead of a routine, someone please bless me with knowledge :D
Thank you in advance
pronation1 2 years ago
ATP is essentially the unit of energy that our body uses. Overall, our body is constantly producing ATP and in the average person, about 2kg of ATP are made/consumed in a day. ATP along with other components, drive the formation of glycogen in the muscles, which they love to utilize in order to move.within the muscle we have about 900kcal of glycogen that can be utilized by the muscle. Overall, you are not limited to 8 seconds of ATP overall, but possibly only to 8 seconds per rep.

Why would having a healthy snack before bed spike your insulin? A healthy snack before bed is a VERY good idea. I have slice of Ezekial bread with almond butter heated in the microwave with spreadable fruit and a glass of skim milk. That's how I STAY lean.

totodile013 2 years ago
this isnt entirely true, if you are trying to build muscle yo ushould have a constant protein intake because you need protein to build muscle and your body cant store protein.
magepwnzer 2 years ago
Yes it is true. The body digests natural proteins like fish, chix and beef much more slowly and they last longer in the gut making them available for much longer periods. But the average lifter or muscle mag reader doesn't understand or believe this.

@TheyCallMeSnotty actualy that is untrue...you cant just eat ANYTHING....for example: cholesterol. Cholesterole isnt like fats . it doest break down..your will excrete 5% of it every excretion cycle...no more than 5% (unless you take drugs or medicines)
hazemalsaadi 2 years ago

Food dont make you BiG Lifting weights does.
kristylejeff111 2 years ago
food is what makes you big. Having said that, you MUST have both to get big. without either, you wont get big
hazemalsaadi 2 years ago
no its the other way around. weght lifting is what makes you big, food stimulates
M0d3rator 2 years ago
lifting weights doesnt stimulate anything but ur hormones the reason u gain muscle when u lift are the muscle strands ripping and repairing themselves. thats why food is important because they give the nutrition needed to repair muscle. lifting weights is the DIRECT cause of the ripping muscle tissue and food is the indirect cause. think of ur body like a car and food is the fuel
MattDurling 2 years ago
@MattDurling you're right. it is very hard to draw the line. But it is a fact that lifting weight stimulates the 'repair' of muscle-->thus the gain. When lifting, there are a lot of nerve impulses to muscle fibers. Some will 'tear'...that is the stimulus...but the food wil actually MAKE the muscles!!! food is like the ingredient that fixes and makes the muscle cells. as for the hormones, I like to think of them as the stimulus to 'directing' and 'allowing' the food to fix that muscle.
hazemalsaadi 2 years ago
Any function of the body will use calories. Whether it's the digestive system, the respitory system, you name it. The body repairs itself and uses a few extra calories daily to accomplish this. It will even take calories from stored fat to do this. 90% of muscle building and training is done in the gym. Food, excess food or whatever is NOT the main driver in muscle gain.

Actually, the difference is that when you go to sleep insolence levels are low and when your in your office in the day your insolence is higher. Because your insolence is low at night or when you sleep to be more specific, carbs[both simple carbs(sugar) and complex carbs(low glycemex carbs)] will not be used for energy and stored as fat.
shechshire 2 years ago
its insulin not insolence hahahahah insolence means a lack of respect LOL
PFCAhammed 2 years ago
ha, yea guess I overlooked that XD lol
shechshire 2 years ago
Let me correct my self a little here... it's not necessarily insolence (unless your diabetic) but the fact that once carbs are "shuttled into cells" so to speak, if they are not used than they are simply converted into fat.
