@TheLifeofElias I agree that the immediate context of the song is Steve's experience with Chagall Guevara. But every good lyric has multiple levels to it, and Steve's too good a lyricist to be unaware of these other dimensions. And the subtext -- both in the song, and in his experience with Chagall Guevara -- is that it can as difficult for Christians to fit in with the religious as with the secular worlds. (Oh, yeah, and I've talked with Steve about the song as well :-).
Actually, Chagall Guevara was made up of talented Christian misfits like Steve. It's why the band was so good and also probably why the band was so short lived. ;(
@05neal ""Actually, Chagall Guevara was made up of talented Christian misfits like Steve. It's why the band was so good and also probably why the band was so short lived. ;("
...that, and while Steve was one of my heroes, Chagall and Che Guevara were *not*. A lot of Christians were saying WTF? and didn't tune in.
in all reality (and i do not mean to demean any of the christians here) but who does not write a song from a completely personal point. it is his experience in a band. when this album came out along time ago it touched me and i adopted it to explain my own feelings like most people do with most songs. that is the mark of a great song writer they say something they feel about there own experiance and we can all understand in our own way. Like psalms like Micheal card like Maynard James Keenan
I approved your video response, and I appreciate your explanation of the songs meaning. However, I would like to say that often songs develop personal meanings for individuals, and I would think that Steve would appreciate people taking other things out of the song other than just his story about the band. Thanks again, and I can understand where you are coming from, but if the song helps people with their own situations, I think they can take what they want from it. God bless!!
I doubt that Steve Taylor is as self-obsessed as to produce a song that has no meaning for anyone but himself. Never met him, but I learned a lot from his songs.
It is a song about his expriences, but Steve is not the only "misfit". There are other Christians that do not fit into the box of "Christianity"; thus, the song is also about the box of "Christianity" and all of us Christians lost in the dryer ...
hi Believing1Thomas~ THANKS SO MUCH for typing out the lyrics to this song- I wanted to play it for my 14 r. old son tonight-and he couldn't understand the words-(i lost that cd!)so thank again-perfect timing! Gotta love Steve Taylor! God Bless! Eileen
MORE: We're gathered here to ask the Lord's blessing Maybe not his blessing Maybe we're not asking at all Out of the box with every good intention Did you fail to mention This time we were destined to crawl? And every day that we died just a little more I was sure you were sovereignly watching us dangle I don't get it now But I'll get it when In sock heaven I see it all from your angle (Chorus)
Verse 2: Out of the wringer, into the dryer Couldn't just retire Had to try tempting the fates One little band spinning 'round together Couldn't cling forever God, I think I'm losing my mates Seven good years, followed by a feeling I'd hit the glass ceiling Maybe I'd best disappear Pick any market Pick a straitjacket If you can't act it Misfit, you don't belong here Lord, where do we go?
Lyrics: Out of the wringer, into the dryer Spins the clothes higher Squeezing out static and shocks Little stockings tumbling 'round together Couldn't cling forever Now I'm missing one of my socks Lord, where do they go? CHORUS: One pile waits with their god in a box The other pile nervously mocks heaven Misfits lost in the dryer, take heart Maybe there's a place up in sock heaven
@Believing1Thomas < well I never listened to this song.I agree with AmeilleZ. Thanks Thomasfor the lyric.I myself like steve taylor am a misfit. I envy people who comform to the social norm.like they say. 'God isnt finished wt me yet'
I love this song since I first heard it awhile back Steve Taylor is a good example of using the talent anbd gifts for God- really, scarily talented!! I LOVE HIS VIDEO "LIFE BOAT" I LOVE STEVE TAYLOR_and more than that, I LOVE THE AMIGHTY GOD I SERVE_ ine the words of thelegendary Late LArry NOrman-"Why should the devil have all the good music?" GOD BLESS YOU ALL!
Sock Heaven is an allogorical, metaphoric song talking about Christianity "One pile waits with its God in a box" in other words putting God into a box and saying he cant work beyond this or that area "The other pile nervously mocks Heaven" basically people who have seen what God can do...but mock it and say it isn't of God...basically it's a challenge to Christians to "think outside the box"
Haven't you ever wondered where the lost socks go after they have spent 1-2 cycles in the dryer? The ones you can never find the pair? That's what the song is about.

Verse 3:
Didn't want a platform to build a new church
Didn't want a mansion in rock heaven
Didn't want more than to be understood
Maybe there's a place up in sock heaven
Lord, where do we go?
