A genius of comedy! I was 12 when he died, but I still remember watching him make his final performance on the "Live From Her Majesty's" variety show... had a heart attack on stage in the middle of the act. Everybody thought it was part of the act and applauded wildly as he was dragged through the curtains. The guy died doing what he loved and kept people laughing till the very end.
How many others out there would take pleasure in having people laugh at you as you die?
I like this guy but quite a few of these jokes are from Jewish standups from the 40s and 50s vaudeville tradition in America. A lot of Burns, Berle, King, etc. I can see why he was so cherished.
my grandpa has video tapes of tommy cooper, and whenever me and my younger brother would go over there we were so excited when he asked, 'who wants to watch tommy cooper?' :')
Am I missing something here? Is this what passed for comedy in those days?? I watched a Laurel and Hardy movie the other day and was laughing my butt off. This though...
@aimsteroo He probably is. Americans dont find anything funny unless its very loud and has no sarcasm in it. Americans cant do sarcasm very well. They have to say 'not' otherwise they dont understand.
tommy cooper used to stay at the frogmore hotel in windsor when playing locally in the 70's when my friends mum and dad used to own it - he used to buy evey one in the bar a drink and tell jokes and stories i was only 12 or 13 - serving everyone! also ken dodd used to stay and offer everyone a drink and not pay the bill!!
Tommy was funny I used to watchbhim as a child he died when I was 8 years old, however, the jokes you have to admit are lame and only he could pull them off. people today just wouldn't laugh at this stuff. Odd isn't it.
For all fans, I highly reccomed a very intimate and accurate biography from a man who worked with and knew TC well, John Fisher`s `Always Leave Them Laughing`. A lot tof the formulation of his comedic personality, gags and tricks as seen on the many YT posts are all dscibed in intrictate detail, along with the very human side of TC`s personality! A great read for all TC fans.
It is not one man nor a million, but the spirit of liberty that must be preserved. The waves which dash upon the shore are, one by one, broken, but the ocean conquers nevertheless. It overwhelms the Armada, it wears out the rock. In like manner, whatever the struggle of individuals, the great cause will gather strength.
Oh my gosh, i didnt realise both Tommy Cooper and Eric Morecambe died in the same year! That was, clearly, a very bad year for British Comedy! RIP Guys.
I didn't know who Tommy Cooper was untill today and i can already see why people miss him so much. i have never know of him and i miss him. does that make sense?
