This Callas (circa '54) + Christa Ludwig (from the '60 version with Serafin) would have been just absolutely perfect! Stignani is terrific, except that she sounds too old, a bit matronly, for Adalgisa. Ludwig on the other hand, just sounds so feminine and so vulnerable. And by the time she partnered with Callas, the latter was already weakening in her powers...
NORMA (Fra sè) Oh! Rimembranza! Io fui così rapita Al sol mirarlo in volto! ADALGISA Ma non m'ascolti tu? NORMA Segui. T'ascolto.
I cant stop listening to this. Why is it so compelling? Her technique has been criticised over the years and she was at her peak for such a short time and yet what beauty! Is it her vulnerability coming through that moves us so much?

Brava Callas! You make it possible for me to feel again. Also, bravo Sgr. Corelli. To quote a writer from another era, "giants walked the earth in those days."
J'ai une telle passion pour cette voix que je ne peux oublier La Callas, je vibre d'une émotion exceptionnelle lorsque je l'écoute, merci pour ce souvenir
Callas' voice was at the peak of its powers here; she of course was one of the most expressive artists who ever lived, and a great musician who pronounced the text better than anyone. How marvelous to have this snippet; many thanks for uploading it. May we hope for more from this 1954 recording?
This is my favorite recording of Norma. The voice is stunning all the way through this opera. This Norma is what hooked me on Callas, originally. The whole opera with this recording is worth owning. Just make sure that it is this particular recording of Norma with Callas, there are several available.
Interesting, I think Callas is more stunning in the 1960 version. She sounds more feminine there, she has matured. A few strident notes even give more dramatic impression there - par example "cosi trovava", sang here between 2:47-54
Callas voice is unparalleled! Big, heavy, strong sometimes. Light, agile and dynamic sometimes. Maybe her timbre and color aren't perfect for opera but that was the reason she could put a dramatic extra in her roles that made her unforgettable!
OH. yes. callas. 54. forever.

I'm sure Bellini himself would have been taken back by this spectacle.

Maria sings like an angel in this recording but Stignani is simply barking.

@AliciaDupres You are barking.

@Alfgard1 Well, maybe I am, who knows? However, unlike Stignani I don't do it for living and definitely do not record it :-))

incomparable although ross's version also has merit but is quite different

I love how she sings ''io fui cosi'' in the beginning and can keep listening to just that particular frase.
Anyway, this was the first Norma I ever heard and it really made me fall in love with Maria Callas.
Stignani is great too, such a sweet sounding voice.

I'm agree, it's so beautifully worded. In my opinion, this recording of Norma contains some of the greatest moments Callas ever recorded.

@billyguns2 OH GOd! I think "Norma" it's just for Maria don't want to sounds rude to other good sopranos but Norma it's just so belong to Maria
Nacidodelmar 1 year ago
@Nacidodelmar She was indeed Norma, just as she was also Medea. Those two roles are untouchables and retired with her.
