It is certainly fascinating to discover another dimensin of Marian Anderson's endlessly versatile singing skill here with Dmitri Mitropoulos, who did so much to discover and develop new musical talents, including the young Leonard Bernstein.
The Metropolitan Opera orchestra adds to this success.
I am watching the Lincoln Memorial rededication today on cspan. I decided to listen to Marion Anderson recordings to compare performances. My mother is a member of the DAR who has long expressed regret to me at what was done to Miss Anderson. I understand that she wasn't permitted in onstage opera except for this one Met performance. Out of all the recordings I listened to today, I think I like this one the best. I'm including this in my playlist. Excellent work giving voice to the voiceless.
oldParasiteSingle I want to say to you don't be so hard on your mother or any members of THAT TIME. It was just something they were used to and taught I think many of them regretted it but they recognized Ms. Anderson for it..I'm sure Ms. Anderson got over it too. She had such a beautiful spirit. She didn't hold it to their charge
@oldParasiteSingle I found some interesting facts that might interest you:
Miss Anderson performed this role a total of eight times for the Met, either on the home stage or on tour.
According to Opera News Magazine, Miss Anderson had been contacted at least twenty years prior to this recording for possible staged opera work in Moscow and Brussels.
Miss Anderson was actually the SECOND African to headline at the Met. The first was Janet Collins from the Met's Corps de Ballet.

This recording came far too late in Anderson's career. The voice by this time could barely take a pitch. The vibrato and wobble is pretty bad as well. Anderson was a great, great artist, it is perhaps just as well that she never did staged opera. I don't think she had the temperment and fire required for roles like Carmen, Amneris, Azucena, though she might have done great things with Erda in Wagner's Ring.
Actually, her birth year is unclear as there are different recordings of her birth date. My point referenced the impact of age on the voice not the eaxct age of Ms. Anderson.

Lots of singers of even older age sounded a lot better than Anderson did here. Birgit Nilsson sang Electra at age 65, Kirsten Flagstad, who died at 67, took her voice to heaven with her. Teresa Berganza sounded great at 60; Domingo is still singing at 69; Elisabeth Schwarzkopf sang better at 63 than Anderson did at the time of her Met debut; Victoria de los Angeles sang well into her mid 70's.
por qué no canta el coro??? esta es la grabación en vivo de la ópera? muchísimas gracias, he estado esperando mucho a que alguien lo suba a youtube!!! thanks

note that she was invited to sing at the Met , not by an American manager, but by Bing who was an Austrian.

does anyone know what this particular symphony tuned to? I'm not bashing them, it's very beautiful, just curious as to what hertz.
For my ears it's sounds lower than I'm used to...it could be the time in which it was recorded or just the age of the recording.
Keep music ALIVE!!!

A voice does not "take a pitch"...it produces a pitch...this comment makes no sence.

don¨t like her vibrato in low notes! besides I think is remasterized, I love Anderson anyway.

Madame Anderson was 62 when this was recorded, who else sounded this good at that stage of a career,

Actually, she was born in 1897, so she would have been 58 here.
