Roy's playing here, as far as I'm concerned, stands as the template for tasteful rockabilly guitar work (Scotty Moore notwithstanding). And that P-90 tone from his L-5 - beautiful! Dale and Roy are rockin' together now.
this is proof that roy doesn't sound the same in every song. No squealing pinch harmonics here. It sounds like he rolled down the volume knob for the entire song.
@AmosNomore Cool, thanks. I've always wanted to know more about Roy. He seems so sincere and humble in his playing. I'm curious what drove him to commit suicide
An advice: Check all the other videos by terkinoh of Dale Hawkins. They have only 40-50 Wieveres - unbeleviable as many are at least as good as this one or even better and many previously unissued records. It's an helluva good rockn'roll. So CHECK!
Just wanted to say thanks for posting this song. I've heard about it and this is the first time I'm hearing it and I was born in 1957. Love Roy's playing, been listing to roy since his 2nd album. I miss his guitaring. He was a big influence on my guitar playing back in the '70's. Thanks again.
no, that's roy buchanan; james burton played on susie q and others. pick up the Rock N Roll Tornado CD by Hawkins; it has 30 songs showcasing his major guitarists from the 50s and 60s.

I saw Buchanan perfom shortly before his death. Great guitarist. Nice, simple arrangement here.

He played a Gibson hollow-body on this... that's part of the reason the tone is different. I'm in the middle of reading his biography right now.

Did he play the guitar on Dale Hawkins's Suzie Q?
kenmaido 2 years ago
No, that was James Burton on the original recording. I'm sure Roy had to play it more than a few times live with Dale, though:)

"Roy Buchanan: American Axe"? Excellent read. Probes the evolution of Roy's psyche and guitar mastery very deeply.

That's the one! Yes, it's an excellent read:)

OK, I was thinking of "Susie Q" that James played on. Yes, Roy even put out a small label album in 1980 called "My Babe".

Was roy buchanan a blues guitar player?Hawkins said that willie dixon played boogie woogie on two of his songs.

Willie is famous BASS player, and I believe the author of this song, which was originally recorded by Little Walter (harmonica legend)
