Man On the Moon, interesting title to his movie. A lot of people believe that the moon landing was the biggest hoax ever. For some people the moon landing is synonymous with hoax. The words are almost interchangeable. With this in mind the title for his movie could very well be Hoax and it would keep the same meaning. Does anyone get what I am saying? Any reasonable speculation that Kaufman faked his death ended on the twenty-year anniversary, in 2004. Now, maybe his plans were to reveal the hoax after 20 years, but then he screwed it up by actually dying.
I knew Andy personally in Middle School and High School in Great Neck. He was a heavy smoker even then -- but he did not smoke tobacco. He dabbled with substances that are not healthy to dabble with. You can put 2 and 2 together. Yes, faking his own death would be something he might consider. But I don't believe he would have made his family and friends so sad for 20 years. He is gone except for our memories of him.

Andy smoked for a few years in his teens, smoked while playing Tony Clifton and was constantly in smokey venues. So the whole smoking excuse isn't true. A friend of mine got lung cancer at 36 and he hadn't smoked since he was 17.

To say "smoking causes cancer" is to make an overly simplified statement that, while sort of right, is actually incorrect. It increases the risk by 300%, but that's not quite the same as a "cause". But most who smoke don't get cancer, and 1/4 of those who get cancer do not smoke.

I didn't make this video entirely seriously, I'm definitely not trying to say that people who get lung cancer and aren't smokers are in any less pain or are any less seriously affected then people who do. But does that prove that someone who's wheels fell off crashed because he was drinking? You cannot know if your cancer was caused by your smoking. You can only know that it increased your risk. In a given population we can say that a percentage of cases resulted from smoking, but we can never know which ones.

This is a perfect example of the pop media mis-educating idiots in attempt to tell them something. To say "smoking causes cancer" is to make an overly simplified statement that, while sort of right, is actually incorrect. It increases the risk by 300%, but that's not quite the same as a "cause". But most who smoke don't get cancer, and 1/4 of those who get cancer do not smoke.

I didn't make this video entirely seriously, I'm definitely not trying to say that people who get lung cancer and aren't smokers are in any less pain or are any less seriously affected then people who do. I just think that Andy would have found the dramatic and mysterious details that people exaggerate about his death amusing, so it's more just to honor him and his belief that anything is possible.

@Hellenologophilia You missed my point. Correlation doesn't prove causation. Drinking while driving increases your risk of accident. But does that prove that someone who's wheels fell off crashed because he was drinking? You cannot know if your cancer was caused by your smoking. You can only know that it increased your risk. In a given population we can say that a percentage of cases resulted from smoking, but we can never know which ones.

According to the EPA 20,000 lung cancer deaths nationwide every year are caused by radon. You don't need to smoke to get lung cancer, it just makes it more likely. Kaufman was a fun entertainer but people die.

Actually, it is NOT "almost impossible" to get lung cancer without smoking. It's certainly not the only cause.
Also, he worked in clubs where people DID smoke, and probably breathed in a lot of second hand smoke, which could have been a contributing factor.

Don't even try to persuade most of his fans that he might be alive. I wrote an article on it once and received just amazingly nasty responses from people who seemingly need to believe he is dead. Even suggesting he might not be made them crazy, like we were talking about a saint or something. Andy would love the whole conversation and some of his fans want it to stop entirely.

I'm actually of the belief that he is dead. The point I was making was that it is ironic that he died of cancer considering that he was obsessed with faking his own death and the Tony Clifton thing. I do believe he is dead though.
