The squier 2 were made in Korea and were really good guitars for the money. They were on par with the MIM strats. They were made from 1989 and whenever Fender stopped making guitars in Korea. The Japanese squier strats are really good guitars and the squier pro-tones. The cheaper strats made in China are Ok if you can find one that does not buzz.
Just got mine the other day, any advice on how to make my beginner amp work with my Squier strat? It only has Master volume, gain, treble, middle and bass.
The older Fender Squire series guitars, like the 89 one played here, are more on par with MIM Fenders than most of the Squiers that were produced. That said, Squiers have gotten a lot better the last few years. My first guitar was a 96 made in China Squier. It pretty much sounds like shit when put through an amp but, it was good to learn on and it held a tune surprisingly well if you didn't try to use the trem. A lot of those Chinese Squiers were chunks of shit.
I have to agree that buying a new MIA Fender is a waste of money. Unless you just want to support the American workers. Fender sells the MIA's by selling that load of shit about the "better" wood making any difference in SOUND quality. Such a load of shit when it comes to ELECTRIC guitars. Buy a Squier or MIM body and replace the bridge, pickups, all other electronics, and get a Warmoth neck for it and you will have a guitar that will SMOKE any MIA Standard Fender for the same money or less!
How do you tell, i have a Squier by fender, no prefix on the serial no. which is on the neck plate... It plays and sounds Great, and it wieghs alot, solid body...
From playing guitar and advancing to new songs. The squier Strat did set me back and I felt that that playing any more advanced guitar helped me improve so much faster that the Squier could not due (due to its more complicated fretboard). Yet after this I, and many others, could come back to the Strat and make it sound amazing. But still I think the Strat still sucks because it would not let most improve fast enough as others guitars would let them ;)
Been saying this for years. If you want the romance of a US-made guitar, spend £900+ on a US Fender. If you want 90% the same players quality for £250 it's easily done - buy a Squier and upgrade the hardware for tuning stability, check eBay for well-specced partscasters, Tokais, etc. Then get your guitar well setup. Even a high-end guitar that isn't well set-up sucks.
Ive had a squire strat for about 3 years now and ive played many higher end fender guitars and it sounds just like the standered american strat....it does come out of tune alot but that can be fixed...does anyone have an opinion about a standered tele
@Nathanguitarman The fender and squier telecastors are literally the same guitar. I bought a squier strat two days ago but tried the telecastors. They're not the most attractive guitars but feel and sound great, there is just a huge difference in price tag :D About the tuners you can always upgrade to grover ones.
hope you are being sarcastic, squire strats are hit or miss guitars. I luckily hit.... through all the shit has been through like dropping it, dinging it, having my brothers friend jumping on it ( no joke ) it still plays like a fucking beauty. Any good guitarist can get a good tone out of a guitar and if they are smart, can adjust the action to play smooth as cream, such as mine.
I own a fender strat myself..N i love it..I play metal song with it also..I tuned it down to drop c,b..Nothing wrong with it..Its the squire that sucks..Squire is a cheap model made by fender..Thats why..Why dont u try the pure n the ori fender guitar(not squire)..
Obviously skilled, experienced player. it;s like when ituned and demo;d lo end pearl drum set,. so, exp player but supposedly beg.level guitar. So, just wondering what amp & effects to get Jim Hendricks tone? Looking at begr./intermediate guitars & music store guy recommends Fender Starcaster, but didn't say "Squire." Thoughts? thanks:)
@giggythore i have an epiphone sg and a cheap squier strat, the epiphone sg sounds and plays great, the strat sounds ok but doesnt play well. ive played nicer squiers before though and theyre just as good if not better
@slipknot56000 See my newer videos. You'll see me playing a 2010 Squier Bullet Strat, and it's done well for me so far. It's all-stock just like my red '89 is.
@JbassPlayer28 oh no i havent, probably because i already know he is undoubtedly more persistent than me. I probably wasn't thinking about it because i wasn't talking about skills, i was talking about overall tone and quality i think thats the basis of this vid...its like me going "have you ever thought about upgrading to 6 strings mr jbass player?"..dont even bother asking.
i have heard mixed reviews on squier strats, i have been looking at the squier bullet for months now and i think i might grab myself one. it will be my third guitar, i already have a yamaha apx500 (electro-acoustic) and a yamaha pacifica but i want a more blues sounding guitar. i am however of a strict budget of no more than 200 pounds. do u recommend a squire? just to put u in the picture i play strictly at home through a roland micro cube amp but hope to gig with my own band some day.
Maple board squiers are usually Japanese (significantly better - and more pricey than Chinese/Korean). If that is a Jap strat it will sound and play fab. I have a JV squier I bought in '82 for £180 new - and I prefer it to my USA Strat plus deluxe and Jeff Beck custom shop strat (and they are both great guitars!).
ha i got mine for free, my cousin gave it to me cuz he doesnt have time to play guitar and now im learning ((: i recommned this guitar it feels light for an electric guitar and is very awesome :D

ha when i search the guitar this video is always at the top of google and its scared me from buying one coz i didnt watch the video only looked at the title, no wi feel like a doosh, is this guitar good for a first tim eplayer and ho wmuch should i look to pay for it in uk money, thanks
@lubyp16 Squiers in the UK should start somewhere between 60 to 80 pounds or euros, although that's a guess and I may be totally wrong because I don't know the pricing schema Fender uses on that side of the pond. The Squier guitars web site (just search Google for 'squier guitars', you'll find it) does say there are plenty of dealers all over London. Pop by a few and you can price them out.
@lubyp16 i have a a squier guitar bought it in a sort of beginners set comming with a 15W Fender Frontman amp. I payed in a store about a 180 pounds. The guitar alone varies from a 105-145 pounds depends on where u look. Its a very good guitar for that money I have had mine for 2 1/2 years now and still love it.
@Kingddd333 I disagree. The most famous guitarist are too rich to care about deals. They want sound and tone and you can find a few of them mentioning this in videos that have been made.
well, if people say that squire sucks is because they arent satisfied with it.
People dont say that fender sucks,

@slashngibson i know, right? i've got a mexican squire strat that sounds pretty good and plays pretty smooth too. a lot of it is the set up of the neck and bridge as well as decent pickups. i threw a duncan designed pup in my friends first act guitar and it sounds a lot better as far as tone.
I've played some Gibsons, an R4 les paul custom(perfect), an SG standard(disappointing), a Les Paul Traditional(it was alright, nothing special) and a few others. Overall, they were disappointing. They sounded decent and looked beautiful but they are uninspiring to play. I guess I'm just not a Gibson guy. Also, I agree that Epiphone has some decent offerings, like their Prophecy series, the Les Paul Tribute and the 1960 reissue LP but most of them just don't inspire me
@WoWintosh If you're going to spend over a grand on a guitar, you're better off buying a "player's" guitar rather than something based on image. A few of them or G&L Legacy 2HB or S-500, Paul Reed Smith SC 58 or if you want to go wild, Fernandes Ravelle Elite (crazy shape but seriously cool, good-playing and has a sunburst to die for).
Depends what squire strat you get. People usually get the $100 one that comes with the shitty amp. Also a good amp can make a crappy guitar sound decent, as this video demonstrates.
my dad has an early encore strat he bought back in 1987 it sounds great! new squire strats are made in different parts of the world and it all depends on which country of origin its made for example ive played stratocastor copies from japan/taiwan/china/india/indonisia/ me personally would look for a old 80's japanese made squire or a brand new chinese made one due to the fact that they are well very made.
Yep I got's one of the newer ones. I slaped a set of 10-52's on it and the other guitarist at church who HAS a real strat can't tell the difference. I like it anyhow, feels nice :D. Also the pickups get warmer when you set them close to the strings, just hold the last fret down on the high and low E and use a dime on top of the pickups, it should touch the bottom of the string. that how mine it setup anyhow, but to each his own.
Well, as it is a 1989 squier I am not surprised. They were awesome guitars back then. The recent Squiers build in the 2000s are worse, but I like them anyway!
I got a Strat and it's fine. It was under a hundred bucks, it does the job! I play hardcore punk, horror punk, grindcore, and punkabilly; all of which don't need a clean sounding guitar. The fact that it has a cheap sound makes it more raw and diy. Hell, with our recording quality you couldn't tell the difference between a Strat with a 50w half-blown amp and a $1000 Gibson Les Paul with a top of the line tube amp.
I'm a beginner and have had my Squier for a while and I desperately need to re-string it, but I don't know what strings to get. I'm not looking for a particular sound at the moment, I just want some decent all-round strings, preferably cheaper ones (seeing as I'm just teaching myself in my room). Can anyone direct me towards what strings I should get?
it depends. i would suggest ernie balls. if you wanted to down tune to like drop c but still to be able to play in standard then you want slinkyy tops heavy bottoms. but as i said it depends. just go into your local music shop and ask them for what your looking for and they should show you. ernie balls shouldnt cost more than £10.
Don't pay attention to brand at all. Try all the cheap guitars you can at the store including both Ibanators and Squiers. When you find one you like that's cheap and sounds good, that's the one you buy.
Just for future reference; this guy does not use an amp. I checked out his sight (link in the sidebar) and what he uses to get this brilliant sound out of a squier is a DigiTech GSP 1101 guitar processor and some very skillful crafting and manipulating of the guitar's sound using the processor. Furthermore, the point of his video is to prove that Squier guitars do not sound like crap. If you want to get this sound, buy his book. I would if I could afford the guitar processor!
Fenders seem to have a weird U shape in terms of sound and money. Squiers are great. Custom shops are great. Oldies (like actual 64's) are great. Everything in between is a bit hit-and-miss. Got to buy cheap or really expensive. Vid also shows a good player can make any guitar sound good too.
Hey, do you have any experience w/ the new "Vintage Vibe" series? I've been kinda' looking at those thinking about going the modded Squier route for a while until I can make a little more money. It'd be nice if I could gig w/ a good $300 guitar as opposed to my (current) good $700 guitar b/c I keep hearing all these "horror stories" of guys getting their stuff stolen if they gig the wrong bar on the wrong night or something, and replacability might then become a factor:\
Vibe series Squiers are decent for the money. And yes, guys get stuff stolen from gigs all the time. That is unfortunately a very common thing to happen when gigging. Even if you lost a $300 guitar, that would still suck. :)
I have a Classic Vibe 50s Squier that I gig on a regular basis, and I also have a couple of American Fenders. The Classic Vibes are really nice guitars, and I find myself reaching for it more often than my MIAs which cost on average about 1700 more. I also used to have a read E9 Squier II like the vid poster and it kicked ass too. There are some really nice squiers out there. Check out my video comparing them to me MIA
I'm pretty sure that with Squier's your bound to get a decent guitar, with some amazing and bad ones if you're lucky or unlucky. There is a Squier Tele at my local Guitar Center that sounds as good as the American Fender Tele that costs 10 times as much.
Okay he has nice effects nice amp.. but just because its a squire doesn't mean it is bad. i played a affinity tele that sounded better than a tele american standard
do you work for squier lol i like my squier alot it takes a beatn and is still fun to play

@WoWintosh If you're going to spend over a grand on a guitar, you're better off buying a "player's" guitar rather than something based on image. A few of them or G&L Legacy 2HB or S-500, Paul Reed Smith SC 58 or if you want to go wild, Fernandes Ravelle Elite (crazy shape but seriously cool, good-playing and has a sunburst to die for).
rmenga 1 year ago
@WoWintosh Gibson is up at the top with Fender for most recognizable guitars. They're beautiful sounding...Epiphone however is a cheap knock-off.

If a guitar plas smoothly and is well intonated,
you can make it sound good with a good amp

There is always the argument that a good guitarist can get a good tone out of pretty much anything ;-)
Darkside1974 1 year ago 65
@Darkside1974 not true - i suck at the banjo
rmenga 1 year ago 63
@Darkside1974 I would have to agree that this argument is true. If you truly play good, it doesn't matter what your using, it will sing. :)
TylerVanderkooy 7 months ago
Depends what squire strat you get. People usually get the $100 one that comes with the shitty amp. Also a good amp can make a crappy guitar sound decent, as this video demonstrates.
angry1278 1 year ago
my dad has an early encore strat he bought back in 1987 it sounds great! new squire strats are made in different parts of the world and it all depends on which country of origin its made for example ive played stratocastor copies from japan/taiwan/china/india/indonisia/ me personally would look for a old 80's japanese made squire or a brand new chinese made one due to the fact that they are well very made.

sounds awsome its 250 in guitar center
rune2h2 2 years ago
Yep I got's one of the newer ones. I slaped a set of 10-52's on it and the other guitarist at church who HAS a real strat can't tell the difference. I like it anyhow, feels nice :D. Also the pickups get warmer when you set them close to the strings, just hold the last fret down on the high and low E and use a dime on top of the pickups, it should touch the bottom of the string. that how mine it setup anyhow, but to each his own.
whatUsaybob 2 years ago
Well, as it is a 1989 squier I am not surprised. They were awesome guitars back then. The recent Squiers build in the 2000s are worse, but I like them anyway!
hampustw 2 years ago 3
early 2000s maybe, but the recent ones (with the skunk stripe on the back of the neck in particular) are decent axes

if by that you mean "no shredding", i agree completely.

no, it does matter, he may have moddified his pickups or maybe he is using a pre amp program but a squier doesn't sound like this

i have this guitar and its great for punk rock music.
JerryMan95 2 years ago
I got a Strat and it's fine. It was under a hundred bucks, it does the job! I play hardcore punk, horror punk, grindcore, and punkabilly; all of which don't need a clean sounding guitar. The fact that it has a cheap sound makes it more raw and diy. Hell, with our recording quality you couldn't tell the difference between a Strat with a 50w half-blown amp and a $1000 Gibson Les Paul with a top of the line tube amp.

Grungeyyy 2 years ago
yeah 10's are standard. basically the higher number the thicker, and the thicker the harder to bend. thick strings also produce a heavier tone.

where can a get that guitar in england anyone i was told its a great guitar for starters
daniboi12345 2 years ago
The SquierGuitars web site only lists US and Canada dealers unfortunately.
rmenga 2 years ago
go to your local music shop.
i got a Squier starter pack for £150. Came with guitar, amp, cables, strap, book, pics and bag.
azy290 2 years ago
I'm a beginner and have had my Squier for a while and I desperately need to re-string it, but I don't know what strings to get. I'm not looking for a particular sound at the moment, I just want some decent all-round strings, preferably cheaper ones (seeing as I'm just teaching myself in my room). Can anyone direct me towards what strings I should get?
big12oz 2 years ago
it depends. i would suggest ernie balls. if you wanted to down tune to like drop c but still to be able to play in standard then you want slinkyy tops heavy bottoms. but as i said it depends. just go into your local music shop and ask them for what your looking for and they should show you. ernie balls shouldnt cost more than £10.
BloodstainedBlade1 2 years ago
what, they cost me 3.99 :P
LiVeXb0X 2 years ago
Most people prefer D'Adarrio strings they aren't too expensive. Ernie Ball's are good too though.
PurpleCricket01 2 years ago
Should I list the artists that use ernie balls:
Eric Clapton
Jeff Beck
Slash
Jack white
and hundreds more.
LiVeXb0X 2 years ago
It's also a good thing to know the gauge of the stock strings, before you change them...
Dodgibishi 2 years ago
When in doubt, use .10 to .46 (I use .09 to .42 but everybody else I know uses .10's)
rmenga 2 years ago
Try the "D addario String 010-046" They have a nice balanced thickness.
Ask a lokal shop about Strings and service :D

No, Ibanator. Ibanez is a weak sounding name. Ibanator sounds much better.
rmenga 2 years ago
Should i get a squier or a Ibanez GRX20 guitar? i play mostly metal/hard rock and cant afford no $1000 guitar
YouTubMAGGOT 2 years ago
Don't pay attention to brand at all. Try all the cheap guitars you can at the store including both Ibanators and Squiers. When you find one you like that's cheap and sounds good, that's the one you buy.
rmenga 2 years ago
thanks i usually assume brand matters alot because of comments like "x sounds like shit compared to x"

So i guess i CAN really play my favorite songs on my Squire that I got for Christmas!
wickedblackcamaro 2 years ago
Just for future reference; this guy does not use an amp. I checked out his sight (link in the sidebar) and what he uses to get this brilliant sound out of a squier is a DigiTech GSP 1101 guitar processor and some very skillful crafting and manipulating of the guitar's sound using the processor. Furthermore, the point of his video is to prove that Squier guitars do not sound like crap. If you want to get this sound, buy his book. I would if I could afford the guitar processor!
Keep on rocking!

It'd be nice if I could gig w/ a good $300 guitar as opposed to my (current) good $700 guitar b/c I keep hearing all these "horror stories" of guys getting their stuff stolen if they gig the wrong bar on the wrong night or something, and replacability might then become a factor:\
yobhsiFehT 2 years ago
Vibe series Squiers are decent for the money. And yes, guys get stuff stolen from gigs all the time. That is unfortunately a very common thing to happen when gigging. Even if you lost a $300 guitar, that would still suck. :)
rmenga 2 years ago
Well, yeah, but it'd suck about $400 less than having my other one stolen:S:D
How do you find Vintage Vibe Squiers compare to your #1 there, tho'?
yobhsiFehT 2 years ago
I find that any guitar isn't truly "yours" until you break it in and play it for a few months. This counts for any guitar you like.
rmenga 2 years ago
that is the truth.and thanks for showing that an affordable axe can sound great if you can PLAY...effects help, but it's in the hands
750tblack 2 years ago
I have a Classic Vibe 50s Squier that I gig on a regular basis, and I also have a couple of American Fenders. The Classic Vibes are really nice guitars, and I find myself reaching for it more often than my MIAs which cost on average about 1700 more. I also used to have a read E9 Squier II like the vid poster and it kicked ass too. There are some really nice squiers out there. Check out my video comparing them to me MIA

brilliant playing and sound
Jordo1900 2 years ago
I'm pretty sure that with Squier's your bound to get a decent guitar, with some amazing and bad ones if you're lucky or unlucky. There is a Squier Tele at my local Guitar Center that sounds as good as the American Fender Tele that costs 10 times as much.
