sitting right here in my deskchair, i want to cry but i can't? this song makes me happy and sad at the same time. strange feelings occur :S afx is the shit
I like the pictures, they have a 'vérité' feel about them. and remind me of Uni
The pictures do go well with the music, it makes you want to know their story,. I think that still pictures illustrate much better than moving pictures the fleeting and transient nature of life and reality
I think about all the old pictures of people now long dead, yet somehwere still smiling back from within sepia frames. The moment in time captured like a fly in amber.
the bell is fucking awesome. have you ever seen the movie, "Fail-Safe" it ends with a similar noise that i think is an alrm or just piercing type sound, while an atomic bomb explodes over new york city, and then goes right into a photo montage like this, of people just doing evryday things. you created the same type of effect here
@AsDeadAsDillinger This same exact chain of thoughts occured to me, prior to reading your comment. This song is very moving, especially with some THC influence!!! I like the idea of a half forgotten memory, of what used to be, what has changed, and what is now. Live , love and laugh my friend!! Life is/can be a beautiful experience if you tap into love, nature, and just letting music like this move you, through good times, and bad.
So I suppose that lichen grows on old derelict and half forgotten buildings.
their crumbling remains are like sad half forgotten memories,
You can hear the wind blowing through the ruins around @1:05 (pic=guy in white coat with a broom)
I bet that's the 'texture' he was going for...perhaps
Didn;t Tesla believe that all ideas exist seperate from man in a 'dimension' of their own, and seperate people can share ideas through it, or something?
i like Aphex but i think some of his stuff is too highly rated due to his popularity from his few awesome tracks. This does nothing for me and sounds pretty ameture tbh.
@AnalogueAbsynth He's a lucid dreamer and puts what he see's into music using complex sounds of his own. More interesting than most people nowadays. He's an innovater man.
I had a go at creating an ambient track... but fuck me you dont think it would be hard but you listen to some one who can probably master a track in 2 mins, and the only thought i have is "I want to be like this guy one day". I probably never will but u kno, we all gotta dream.
words cant explain how beautifully this is all put together, just reminds me of being a child once again, and that alarm clock at the start of the song and with the fitting picture of the kid running to school it seems is magical, it just makes me want to go back in time and live in my childhood once more. no worries back then, just growing up playing games outside and learning about life. the video really sums up what people do in their everyday life.
The chords I used in the video response are the same (keep in mind I heard this after composing 'Moonrise') as the first three chords after 0:43. I hope you enjoy my piece

@dannydemanny Your head's in the wrong zone for this one from Aphex. It has a warm, homely feeling, yet it feels cold and unnerving. Very melancholy. Richard James has a very natural and distinct way of creating atmosphere. Aphex is the perfect acid soundtrack. Lichen is more than worthy for the favourites.
@LEDCircus You, who uses all these intelligent sounding terms in an attempt to describe music in the form of words doesn't even understand sarcasm when it comes about?
@dannydemanny How can one understand emotion through typing? To understand the sarcasm of your comment, I would first have to know you and how you would normally type, and I don't. You may perceive this as being a very angry statement, when it's actually very calm. My point being, emotion (and sarcasm is a branch of emotion) cannot be fully conveyed without the subtle changes in the voice and the expressive capabilities of the face. Something no artificial device can fully comprehend.
@LEDCircus Do you think the possibility exists that you actually might just be such an artificial device you were talking about, without you even knowing?. Because, there really was a lot of obvious sarcasm in my comment. I'm not judging you in any way. In fact, I believe that an electronic humanoid as yourself should be treated equal to the classic, more organic type of humanoid. I mean, In the end, aren't we all just a bunch of atoms?
@dannydemanny Hahaha. I like what you've done there. Very clever. More respectable than just sarcasm. As nice as it's been talking to another "bunch of atoms" (very oversimplified), I'm afraid my Android Human Interface is malfunctioning and protocol states I must terminate this conversation...........
I had night terrors, and something demonic kept fucking with me, I prayed to God, (no shit guys) for the first time Prayed - "god please protect me from evil spirits tonight, im desperate, please defend me in my sleep" I put this song on youtuberepeat in my headphones. fell asleep, woke up at 6.00am on the dot with this playing, beatiful warm sun on me, and I felt Energetic and Happy for once :)
WOW. Raymond, I clicked on your channel while listening to this song and accidentaly a video called "Dancing immigrant people" started. Apart from some dissonants it was a BEAUTIFUL combination.
Further proof that Mr. James is a true master of many moods...this piece, like all great art, has the ability to articulate a feeling you have inside you, but just can't find the words to express. My wife passed away last March and I'm still coming to terms with it...this song helps me get through the day...
I was listening to Lichen (and a few other ambient tracks by afx) last night. I had a dream about my deceased dog. I got to cuddle her and say goodbye to her, because I never had the chance when she died. When I woke up, I heard this, and cried
am crying already . . . love the twin since the 1st note i everheard nearly 20 yrs ago ! The proper chilling stuff just kills me in the best possible way with love real heartfelt . . . and am a big hairy arsed tough looking muthafocka !
did you add the bell? its such a lovely touch. it gives it that feeling of waking up on your own, looking outside, and catching the sun-rise, and feeling like the first person in the world to see it on that lovely sunday.
@wattapassa yes, i added the bell for some reason. it's probably got to do with just feeling alone, but not necessarily sad. just indifferent, but that i matter still.
whenever I'm depressed or need to do some serious reflecting, I put this song on and just drive around spacing out. It puts me in such a unique state of mind. This along with rhubarb are without a doubt two of the most beautiful pieces of art...ever.
My #2 fave song from Selected Ambient Works II and very beautiful piece of music. I remember in middle and high school when every time I come home crying after frequently being brutally bullied for being autistic, I usually play this song in my room at full blast trying to recover from having been brutally beat up, my head shoved into my locker, etc. If you want my opinion, I think this song could fit well with a scene from a emotionally sad cartoony Disney movie.
you know that feeling when you get goosebumps in the best part of a song. well i just got goosebumps the whole way through this one. they didn't go away till it ended. beautiful.
aphex twin has always been my favorite true artist. this video reminds me that the world goes on no matter whose looking and whose not looking, who dies and who doesnt. it makes you think about humanity and everyone you coexist with.
This kind of reminds me of a cloudy, non-blinding Winter. It's so wonderful to have Winter days like that. for one could enjoy it more and not go blind. Plus it's the smell and feeling of Winter that makes me think of this.
This album let me go back to the time when i was ten, twelve. When i drive with my bike at a sunny summerday, and my fantasy let me be whatever and wherever i wanna be. Amazing music.
Let's not forget how lucky we are. We aren't stuck down a mine with nowhere to go for 3 or 4 months. We are allowed to live unlike Palestinians, we haven't experienced a world war and we haven't been in a country shattering flood like Haiti or Pakistan.
Let's not foget we are incredibly lucky. We are not stuck down a mine with nowhere to go for 3 or 4 months. We are allowed to live unlike Palestinians and we have never suffered a national crisis like in Haiti or pakistan. We are lucky. This song helps we remember how lucky I am.
When I get depressed I put this album on and it makes me feel happy again. I realise I am different then most 17 year olds, none of my friends have heard of brian eno or aphex or even ambient! But I don't care when I get to listen to music this beautiful. I love this music and I hate the way I feel at the moment. What a fantastic album.
1:54 - 2:50. This song reminds me of when I used to be a little boy playing with my mother and grandmother, in the basking sun, on the grass and sand, not caring about a thing.. Then I got older and stopped feeling those emotions that a boy feels.. This song let's me feel them again.. God bless you're soul Richard D. James.. :'(
Yo I am high. And watching this it had a storyw. It was after the appcolyspe and pol starte yo gather up and be happy agin and forget about the past and work together and make a new world
@SemiazasxXx you've just described my life since i broke up from my one true love. years after the fall out i made a new life. ta for your unique perspective.
this song hits me in my roots still to this day.......looking at old pictures....knowing that most of the people are dead by today.....makes me realize that no matter how famous you become in life your name will still fade away when you die....50 years from now no one will know who Brittany spears is...who would remember me?....this depressing statement influences me to live out another day working towards my dream...til im successful
This music possesses the rare quality of unification; not one comment, as far as I have read, expresses anything but the richest claim of praise, awe, or beauty as they have heard it in the music. RDJ's followers (for by what other name can they be described?) are, indeed, of a higher order.
i dont have words to describe this. its just...amasing...but that would be an insult, its much more then that. it seems that everyone has perceived this melody in such a way that its emotional value and integrity is off the charts. just wow...
Beautiful, yet sad music. I like the fact the pictures fit in with the track. This is such a great track to listen to after a depressing day at school. And especially since after I graduate from high school, this track will always and forever play in my head as i remember the fun times i had with my friends I made in high school. But now, after I graduate, since I wont see them again after that, I'll always have this track playing every time i remember the good times i had with them. :'(
My dad died of pancreatic cancer last month, and this song makes me cry because I picture the way he used to pick me up after basketball practice when I was 13.
JonasTeh81. Remember the good times, because that's what will carry you through the hard times. Life is so fragile and hurts us all at some point. Respect to your father.
aw man your makin me think of my dad. now thats an honest memory. anyways stay up. i read that everything that has ever existed on earth or in the universe, is still with us here today. its energy never dies it just takes on a new form. so your dads energy hasnt left. something cool to think about if you feel blue.
@JonasTeh81 The photo compilation is something else isn't it? I left a comment way back when in appreciation for the shots. Very seperate from the typical rolling hillsides, beaches, sunsets, etc. I find far more compelling emotion in works like this, especially being from East Tacoma, WA. Makes me think of so much I haven't experienced in so long. Brings my past right back to me.
My favorite shot is still 1:00. Just somebody sweeping.
@ManicRevelation It really is special. I think it is so intriguing because it forces your imagination to fill in the story behind the characters. Also, it seems to be completely candid, which imparts a genuine feel for the pictures.
@JonasTeh81 I don't know you or your father, and I'm not the kind of guy to feel comfortable giving any sort of criticism to people based on circumstances I'm not involved in. However, I can say that, for me, attaching one memory to a song will ruin it. I wish I could listen to any Alkaline Trio tune without thinking of a specific ex of mine.
@ManicRevelation I don't feel as if it has ruined it for me. It helped me forget the horror of his last few days of agony and remember the beautiful, quiet times we were together, like when he taught me how to drive a stick-shift or when we folded the jib after a relaxing day of sailing. I'm crying a bit as I write this out of sheer nostalgia and gratefulness for these times.
@LubricatedBeat I have depression, it is the cure. It brings a tear of undecided happiness to my eye when I hear this song-- it fills me with the hope that I've always had the delusion that didn't exist. After listening to this song in it's entirety I go from sad to happy, every time. Like I'm reborn as it's beautiful and subtle tone fades with the sadness...
@Spenceland You have genious inside. Depression is not disease, don't believe those meddling doctors, they dont know... You are evolving, depression is good, that's how evolution feels sometimes... Your genious inside is searching for a way to express itself, to take hold in you. Once it does everything will be clear to you :D
Thanks to anyone who replied to my comments, really didnt expect a response i was just venting my frustration!! Anyway good to know there are still nice people in the world....
Although not surprising that you are all Aphex Twin fans... wouldnt have it any other way!!
iziot1 Listening to this and reading your comment really struck a chord with me.Its cool you could express yourself about your situation, it makes me look at the song in a slightly different light. Anyway I'm waffeling on, probably because I got mangled last night, and a bit on the emotional side. You hang on in there soldier, the fact that youre looking on the bright side of your situation shows that you'll get through it. . All the best mate. soz if sounded cheesy, but it was totally sincere
Heard this on the New Age internet radio channel the other day and I HAD to look up this tune. I love ity. :)

It's like a hymn almost., and not just because of the windlike tones. It sounds like a sad but half forgotten memory, don't you think.?
I played it to my Dad and asked him 'Isn't this beautiful'?
he said 'Switch that crap off' and 'Oh God, you're not on drugs again are you?'
When I AM stoned this track can make me cry

I remember in middle and high school when every time I come home crying after frequently being brutally bullied for being autistic, I usually play this song in my room at full blast trying to recover from having been brutally beat up, my head shoved into my locker, etc. If you want my opinion, I think this song could fit well with a scene from a emotionally sad cartoony Disney movie.

aphex twin has always been my favorite true artist. this video reminds me that the world goes on no matter whose looking and whose not looking, who dies and who doesnt. it makes you think about humanity and everyone you coexist with.

James.. :'(

this song hits me in my roots still to this day.......looking at old pictures....knowing that most of the people are dead by today.....makes me realize that no matter how famous you become in life your name will still fade away when you die....50 years from now no one will know who Brittany spears is...who would remember me?....this depressing statement influences me to live out another day working towards my dream...til im successful

This music possesses the rare quality of unification; not one comment, as far as I have read, expresses anything but the richest claim of praise, awe, or beauty as they have heard it in the music. RDJ's followers (for by what other name can they be described?) are, indeed, of a higher order.
mjjha5 1 year ago 5
i dont have words to describe this. its just...amasing...but that would be an insult, its much more then that. it seems that everyone has perceived this melody in such a way that its emotional value and integrity is off the charts.

ManicRevelation 1 year ago
@ManicRevelation It really is special. I think it is so intriguing because it forces your imagination to fill in the story behind the characters. Also, it seems to be completely candid, which imparts a genuine feel for the pictures.
A masterpiece.
JonasTeh81 1 year ago
@JonasTeh81 I don't know you or your father, and I'm not the kind of guy to feel comfortable giving any sort of criticism to people based on circumstances I'm not involved in. However, I can say that, for me, attaching one memory to a song will ruin it. I wish I could listen to any Alkaline Trio tune without thinking of a specific ex of mine.
ManicRevelation 1 year ago
@ManicRevelation I don't feel as if it has ruined it for me. It helped me forget the horror of his last few days of agony and remember the beautiful, quiet times we were together, like when he taught me how to drive a stick-shift or when we folded the jib after a relaxing day of sailing. I'm crying a bit as I write this out of sheer nostalgia and gratefulness for these times.

LubricatedBeat 1 year ago 5
@LubricatedBeat I have depression, it is the cure. It brings a tear of undecided happiness to my eye when I hear this song-- it fills me with the hope that I've always had the delusion that didn't exist. After listening to this song in it's entirety I go from sad to happy, every time. Like I'm reborn as it's beautiful and subtle tone fades with the sadness...

Eitroo 1 year ago
@Spenceland You have genious inside. Depression is not disease, don't believe those meddling doctors, they dont know... You are evolving, depression is good, that's how evolution feels sometimes... Your genious inside is searching for a way to express itself, to take hold in you. Once it does everything will be clear to you :D

iziot1 Listening to this and reading your comment really struck a chord with me.Its cool you could express yourself about your situation, it makes me look at the song in a slightly different light. Anyway I'm waffeling on, probably because I got mangled last night, and a bit on the emotional side. You hang on in there soldier, the fact that youre looking on the bright side of your situation shows that you'll get through it. . All the best mate. soz if sounded cheesy, but it was totally sincere
