I loved this animated series when I was a kid back in the 1970s, but that was the 1970s. Ever since I first saw the original Japanese 1954 Godzilla (Gojira) I just can't help but think making a raw unstoppable radioactive force of nature like Godzilla that has about as much sense of right and wrong as a hurricane into some sort of pet that could be summoned by a family carrying an electronic signal box like a dog whistle and saddling him with Godzuki :-P

I hear you on that. What I remember as a kid was that I really WANTED to like this cartoon, and I already loved both cartoons and Godzilla, but it was just impossible. No one problem was enough to totally kill it for me, but all the problems together were insurmountable.

I wonder though, if they didn't attempt to tie it in with "the Godzilla" but instead created a daikaijū anew, perhaps Godzilla-ish, but altogether different, if it would have fared better.

If you mean this cartoon is dragging Godzilla down in the eye of the public, it's too invisible to make any such impact. If you mean it's dragging Godzilla down in your opinion alone, well, you must have thought very little of Godzilla on the whole if you let this irrelevant side-bar affect your opinion.

If you expect anyone to believe that Godzilla as an iconic character since the '50s has been diminished by this cartoon, think again. The facts are clear. Get 1000 random people in a room from the (modern) world over. What percentage have 1. heard of the Godzilla films, 2. appreciate Godzilla, and 3. ever even heard of this cartoon? If you think there any people who used to like Godzilla movies but now don't because of the existence of the cartoon, you're probably the only one.

But, the comment that he "isn't supposed to be" good or evil I find a bit simplistic. His purpose in terms of the stories changed from film to film, but the hero and villain was even clear to kids watching the movies.

All in all, it was an odd cartoon. I didn't like that he understood speech or cared about human affairs in small scale. He made a poor guard dog character.

But, it's just a Sat. morning cartoon, and could not drag down the film icon.

1st, I'm not trying to debate you, or defend this cartoon, but only explore the topic. I think it's clear that Godzilla, even from the start, was intended to be more sophisticated than merely an animal. Even when destroying, it had clearly a deeper intellect than a common lizard. Even in the films before H-Barbara, it was necessary that he play a role other than mere chaotic, directionless powerhouse lest he bore us ridged.

I think where the idea of the helpful Godzilla originated was with how Gamera changed in such a way, and perhaps fans of both creatures were interested in seeing such a side in Godzilla. However, if you wanted to make a regular series about Godzilla, he simply could not have been a one-diminsional villain, trying to stop him over and over. Frankly, that would suck even worse conceptually.
