when i was a young bloke Joy Div took my highs and lows and put them onto plastic. So now, 30 years later, i can think the same and remember .But from my arm chair..
Weirdly, the intro always reminds me of the Shadows 'Apache'. Refracted, twisted & warped through 20 odd years & Curtis' imagination into this strange dream. Why do I like it so much? It's like a doorway into some other place, scary & exhilarating, nothing safe. It connects past present & future together. A minor masterpiece.
i think that the only person not influenced probably by the pistols was ian it seems that he was set on doing something anyway with that talent for writting..either singing or poetry i think he might have been what is called today..autistic..as well as trying to come to terms with his epilepsy....at 23 i was married with a son......add fame...a misstress...epilepsy...responsability..expectation...dailly schedules....anyway we can all speculate....im 47 now and ians still my icon..god bless.
Joy division along with the Cure and Suioxie and the Banshies started the darkwave scene. In fact Joy Division started as a punk band called The Stiff Kittens. It was just a branch off the punk era. Hence the industrial, darkwave/goth, ska, techno, punk, pop split. And if you must know it all comes from Classical which all comes from feeling so we must all be kinda the same
This band has influenced so many great bands such as Bono of U2, Trent Reznor of NIN, The Cure, Moby, the Smiths, Bloc Party, Radiohead, Coldplay, Red Hot Chili Pepper...list is just too long.
Well i m french , discovered this song when i was 17 , i don't understand why many compare sex pistols with joy division , both created their own way and people can still take what they want in their songs ,revolt or inner feelings , depends of your state of mind of the moment !
I think this song is the vynil version ,sounds more powerful than cd version , i must have listen this song 150 or 200 times ,and that radiohead was influenced by them (national anthem)
Weird, I've been a Joy Division fan for years, and have always liked the Nine Inch Nails version of this song, but never even knew this existed. Glad I found it!
id def agree JOY DIVISION are light years ahead of The sex pistols who are far ovverated and no great shakes really ! wud rather listen to THE stooges than the pistols any day !
They were each accomplished musicians and performers. And together, like all important rock bands, became greater than the sum of their parts. Hence, with Ian's death, the band went. But for two or three years, they WERE the cutting edge, they were it. Shocking to think it was all over by 1980. The 80's produced a plethara of JD-influenced music. I still feel they have an underrated place in history.
JLWing: What? Are you kidding me? What's wrong with Ian Curtis' singing? It's not the most technically proficient, but it's expressive and honest, and the lyrics are always great.
svagana: I don't think Martin Hannet quite "owes his existance" to Ian Curtis. He was born without any help from Ian. I think you mean that he owes his recognition as a producer to Ian Curtis, by producting his band's albums.
@MiskatonicDreamer i've just heard the original for the first time today, after hearing NIN's cover 17 years ago... rythmically and production wise the NIN is better, but the singing is better on the original. Plus the song is brilliantly written, so full marks to Joy Division.
A great song from Joy Division. Martin Hannet , Joy Division and the New Order owe their existance to a person called Ian Curtis. You've all forgotten of... Ian Curtis!
I wasnt always a massive fan of Joy Division but for some reason recently, I am really starting to like them. I just love the fact they say the Sex Pistols and where like "this is shit, we can do better" and history was made. (The dude from Simply Red was at that gig as well, which is fairly disturbing. This Smiths and the Buzzcocks where there too, quite and eerie phenomenon dont you think.)
They were inspired to form the band by the Sex Pistols concert at the Lesser Free Trade Hall, but they are miles away from the Sex Pistols in terms of brilliance, creativity, and fucking awesomeness. The music speaks, it's genius!!! They put the Sex Pistols to shame; the student has become the master.
@janus2059 Whats your point? They saw the Pistols and were inspired to make music! Double win! Why would you even compare the two. Without the Sex Pistols no Joy Division !
@janus2059 everyone puts the sex pistols to shame!! sex pistols WERE the first boy band!! they were simply each one found by a man and put together! simple as that they were a product is all!!
@janus2059, they weren't even students. the only thing attributable to the sex pistols is maybe the lyrics. the music wasn't even comparable in their early days.
NIN did a good version too, I like a lot of the music from JD. I think Love will tear us apart rocks! New dawn fades...they got some gooders! There should have been more.....
@hmmm2009Interesting wow some person would have a problem with that whatever there both good joy division is great and NIN did pretty good i dont see the problem
a true legend who could scribble words down on paper and turn them into classic songs..this man had talent and if they was still around today would be one of the best bands of our generation...r.i.p ian curtis the music still sounds so refreshing now as it did back then....
Ian didn't have an addiction, he was depressed from having epilepsy, he couldn't take it anymore. He didn't want to be in the band any longer cuz performing took so much out of him. The stress of the growing fame, touring, late nights, and the divorce from his wife took a toll on him. Just as it said in his suicide note, he just didn't know how to cope.
Awesome video, good job to who ever did it. And as far as the comment he was a prick, what makes him a prick, the fact that he cheated on his wife???? Is it because he is a guy and cheated on a woman??? Women cheat on men every day and they are not called pricks. They are just victims to a bad relationship. Screw that noise. Long live "THE PRICK". Ian curtis you are and will always be an idol in my eyes.
Awesome video, good job to who ever did it. And as far as the comment he was a prick, what makes him a prick, the fact that he cheated on his wife???? i never liked the vocals its the power of the song and simple destructive behaviour that makes this song so charming gotta love the riffs. yeah the producer was good too. hahaha :P ok so what about trent reznor doing this cover its good... but he never did beat ian curtis in making it so tragic and hopeless.
any junkie is a selfish prick! Trent was too, just about how u turn ur life around and make what is u do have meaning. Ian did, just a lost soul but he left something worth listening to.
@artiswitness i'm not so much disagreeing with you..it is just that i think you have a narrow minded view about relating people to their drug addicftion(s) and Ian was not a drug addict..just because you become addicted to a certain drug does not mean you are a "selfish prick" it means you have a disease..called addiction,no matter what that addiction is..yes,the addiction makes you selfish...but that isn't that persons' total character..just my opinion...at least he left so much behind 4 us
@JoyDivisiongirl agree entirely with what you said , a drug addicts character cannot be defined as "selfish prick" and calling them selfish pricks isnt doing anything to help . and as for ian curtis being a drug addict im baffled , depression killed ian curtis
@conorl858 i totally agree with what you just said too! he was a talented, intelligent, sensitive and complex person who also had so many troubles in his life...depression,the epilepsy, his marriage and the new found fame...in some ways i relate to him, although our lives are totally different, yet in his writings i feel like he is speaking for me in so many ways, for that i shall always be grateful and feel a connection with him and Joy Divisions music.

Apparently, Ian wrote this song after a bad night out at a Tapas restaurant in Manchester. He had a row with a couple of Spanish waiters whom he claimed had short-changed him; hence the line: “Conquistadors who took their share”.
A week later he ended up calling the restaurant to get some resolution to the situation. This backfired as the waiters got hold of his phone number and made a few abusive phone calls to him, hence the repeated lines:
@bachelorfox Yes. The lines: “A duel of personalities That stretch all true realities” was Curtis recalling angrily mouthing off on the phone to the waiters about what he’d like to violently do to them because of the money loss. The reality was that he was a peaceful guy and these words were said in chagrin. His guilt about this unseemly episode later resurfaced on “Closer”.
An old friend of mine hinted me on this band, but I never really dwelved into Joy Division until now. Why the fuck did I wait so long?! This band is awesome!
@jsptron NO DOUBT! A true classic and the best Joy Division song for me along with Twenty Four Hours and Incubation...they are rock legends and much like Nirvana dissolved way too soon and both for the same circumstance (suicide)....
