I sometimes thought Sgouros didn't live up to his huge talent, but this is beautifully nuanced playing (especially since he was only a teenager then).
My favourite Beethoven piano concerto - the 1st movement is so sublime!
This is an excellent interpretation, but just a few 'pegs' lower than the Gilels version which is the best I have EVER heard
Another great Beethoven piece which, in my opinion is so under-rated, is his Leonore Overture No. 3. ( from Ludwig's opera 'Fidelio') It is rather long, so be patient, as it is building up to what must be the most thrilling finale in all of classical music history. It is a Cracker! 5 Stars
:\ no one here seems to realize that this composition utilizes a piano pedal that is practically nonexistent in this current day and age. take the time to wish you were able to hear it the way beethoven really wanted it to be played. Its depressing, as a pianist, to never know what it really sounds like with the original single-stringed pedal...such an amazing piece.
No one will ever know how Beethoven actually intended for any of his music to be performed! We can however to the best of our abilities try to perform it as we can perceive how it was intended to be played through our musical intuition! The music is a gift from our Creator so that we can hear his and feel his presence!
After listening to a slightly faster version, this performance seems to make me lean forward in anticipation (even though i know what's coming), but it get quite annoying lol that's just a purely individual experience though. Im sure some might argue the slower tempo allows for more feeling to be employed.
IMO his best piano concerto and beautifully performed. For centuries there has not been music like this - will there ever be another Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, Hayden, Händel, Vivaldi, etc. - or even a Verdi, Bellini, Puccini.
I don't know why there hasn't been comparable geniuses - does anyone have an idea why not?
Number one there has been. But the thing is that those people were never recognized during their lifetime as much as they are now. The only person that was renowned during his life was Beethoven. In a couple of centuries someone will be asking the same question listing composers from present day and it'll be the same answer.
You have a point, but IMO this is only part of the answer. The ones I mentioned (and consider some the best classical composers) are mostly from a period of more than two hundred years ago and they didn't have to wait two hundred years to be recognized.
yeh, Pop, rock, rap etc... modern music isnt to explore profound human ideas and philosophy, its music that exists purely to sell itself. classical music will remain forever, because it is real music

FUCK YOU! pop, rock, and rap are the way to go. classical is so boring it makes me want 2 throw my head through a wall. I'd rather hear nails on a chalkboard. I agree a lot of modern music does exist just 2 sell, but not all of it. yeah shit like miley cyrus and black eyed peas and w/e, but not all. bands like Fall Out Boy actually write lyrics about important shit that's going on in the world, and it's beautiful. way better than anything beethoven ever wrote
hahahah, just reading that comment, i can tell you have no education. You really sound like a douschebag you know? on top of that, you cant name more then 3 pieces written by beethoven, you know nothing about music, and your just some pot smoking dickhead that has sex with his mother or something.
Without Beethoven you wouldn't have your worthless music you listen to. You have no idea of the influence of classical music because your ignorance stops you from listening to it.
Fall Out boy are awful. Beethoven is amazing. Why did you even come to this video if you'd rather listen to nails on a chalkboard then listen to it. Grow up.
Are you serious or just really high?!?! Your compairing BEETHOVEN to 'teenage heart throb' band Fall Out Boy. Wow seriously, you have SHIT taste. End of. And also for your information Fall Out Boy are (along with all the other shit in the charts), a band making music to sell or (most probably) to appeal to teenage girls that think there so 'deep' or whatever, ha you make me laugh XD
Regarding About Pop. As you can see without the process of classical music , there aint gonna be fall out boy or anything you hear nowadays. Keith Jarrets ,he is a very a good jazz pianist and improviser. But he would never say such kind of thing.. i mean this guy loves playing mozart and bach,he even made recordings of it. If he did not had any classical trainings , he wont be as good as now. Classical music is the root of every music we hear, even in languages.
No there will not, yes I do. Those mentioned made the most of what material and technology at hand in their own days, with contemporarily secure funding, usually a mecenate of the aristocracy or above. The giants, whether opposing or not, standing on their shoulders, set other goals, and funds were more easily found. Time and economy play their parts, of course. Still, whether popular or "serious", lots of awfully good music has been made since LvB, don't you agree?
This why classical music will live forever. A big thank you to the faithful few who devote their lives to performing it and, hence, creating in us a love for a type of music, which actually runs counter to all emantion of our popular, autochthonous culture. Sempervirent.
I also enjoy this concerto the most of all of Beethoven's. The first movement is so touching and displays such sensitivity by the great master. Beethoven most assuredly deserves the mantel of Mozart's descendant in the classical music hierarchy, but he perfectly bridges the gap between classical and the romantic era of Weber, Schubert, and Mendelssohn. I just love Beethoven's work.
I've heard this concerto about a hundred times (I'm not kidding), and I find it amazing how each pianist plays slightly differently and adds a different dimension to the concerto.
This is my favorite piano concerto by ANY composer. I simply love it! It is revolutionary, yet deeply sensitive and celebratory at the same time. Besides that, it is incredibly beautiful.
First movement: sympathy and warm feelings of sensitivity and feelings clear that Beethoven asks a question and continue to strike at the keys of the piano soft and smooth, simply Beethoven in love now none else.
love it.....................

Beautiful Beethoven's concerto. Dimitris made a beautiful great work on it.
My preferred interpreter: Claudio Arrau.
