Dis Helped me alot Bredren. Only i have none of dis Black Charcoal, So i used Crayons Heh, and it turned out okay. Only i messed up deh eye line and all cause i thought that,that was how it was going to look. But this Charcoal only darken it. But other than dat bredren you helped me, Thank you. And good job.

I had trouble with the tilt of the head in this one. Once I start shading I lose the tilt. I don't know what is wrong so can't fix it in future drawings. I am trying a drawing on my own right now and having the same trouble. Do you have any tips or suggestions that would help me show a head at more of an angle even when all the shapes work together like they should?

@janetrtist When the head tilts it usually creates strong highlights on the neck (the musculature is exposed). This was not the case in this video (because of his hair). Having seen your work, I feel that the most important thing that you could work on now is noticing the "subtleties" of the edges of what you are observing. That is crucial. Does it have a hard edge? Does it have a soft edge? Sometimes....the most important rule is to draw what we SEE rather than what we KNOW.

@kazanjianm Thanks! I will go search the internet and see what I can learn about soft and hard edges. Unless you have a video that talks about them and can steer me to it. I don't recall one. Not familiar with these terms and exactly what they mean. :)

Hey Merrill, once again great job. Aside from the actual picture, whats going on over to the right? Are you diluting the black paint with spirits or are you using some sort of grey scale? My brain is having trouble wrapping itself around the idea of dry brush when spirits are involved. Doesnt seem so dry. Lol I have zero paint experience and this "tonal painting" seems like a good place to start coming from pencils.

@BenFalkenstein Yes I agree about the tonal painting comment. It is a good place to start. I am doing my own version of "Dry brush" and yes, it is a tad wetter! As an artist and as a teacher, I have noticed that the best artists alter their approaches, rather than stick to a rigid formula. It is important to KNOW what the correct process is, but it is OK to deviate from it.

I did it but only in pencil cause that's all I have available right now (the charcoal that came in the walmart pencil kit is too hard). I uploaded it to You Tube if you want to see it. I am going to get some watercolor paper, paint, brushes, colored pencils etc. so I can be ready to try this dry brush technique next time. I think it's an amazing technique. Would it work on the regular sketch pad paper I use for my pencil sketching?
