They had (have) minimal musical talent, mediocre songs but they compensated for it with fireworks, make-up and theatrics. Kids just couldn't resist all of their gimmicks. Does that make them a great rock and roll band? Not at all. It's more like a circus act with a Menudo-esque rotation of members. I find KISS more humorous than entertaining.
