Hes not trying to serve short, hes trying to do a 2 bounce serve which is very hard to read :)

god thats an amazing surf, to serve a middle serf then have its second bounce on the white line is a really annoying serf to get since if you push it it'll go high, you cant flip it, and you definietly cant loop it, needs a lot of push control to get that surf

@etiennesama lol no I was joking :p . There are a few posibilities why he only has 3 balls. He is practicing his serve before a tournament in another traininghall. Or he is practicing with only 3 balls because if you only have 3 balls, it puts pressure on him to serve 3 times short without going over the table. But I think he is warming up before a tournament because he is wearing his official china clothes, and they dont wear them for practice.

@DonAntonio91 How do you know he wants to serve short? Many professionals like to serve balls that fall just after the end line. They are called "half-long" serves and force opponents to make weak topspin returns or push long, which is exactly the time of return a player like Ma Long wants to get.

@DonAntonio91 no im pretty sure thats how he wants it. if it just goes over the table by a little bit the opponent will be forved to lift the ball up and high because there is a lot of underspin and ma long will just kil the next ball

@haydonlee93 Yes, everybody knows this tactick and it is used all over the circuit but at 1.19 you can see that Ma Long is not happy with his service at all! And...in my view, Ma Long tries to do the same service over and over and sometimes he juuuust got the edge of the table, but sometimes not. I think that Ma Long tries to let the ball bounce on the very end of the table..that's quite difficult. Yet, Ma Long is my favorite player of all time and I really enjoy whatching training videos of Ma!

He doesnt attempt to serve short. He serves half long (second bounce should be on the white line).

So it´s already to long if he serves 1cm longer than he wanted.

@DonAntonio91 that is short enough for Ma long's style of play, he does not like to go up to the net then chop short, he wants his opponent to give it a half loop so he can go in with his powerful forehand topspin and kill

@DonAntonio91 It's called serving half-long. It's more effective than short because if you loop it, it wouldn't be that powerful, and it is very hard to push short. Therefore, your third ball attack will become easier.

This is just service practice, people. During matches he would be aware to keep his arm out of the way. Also he does not immediately step into position after his service, but continues standing there. During practice one just focuses on placement and spin.

Legality doesn't matter when you're not playing anybody.

The serve at 1:16 is very illegal. The hand is not removed when the ball is tossed. You cannot see the contact of the ball because it is hidden behind his hand. But the video is very good.  Great vid!
