Must have been funny watching them catch Koi. Servals are one of my favorite cats. They're so pretty! I love when the peacock(?) chirps and gets his attention. XD So cute!
We have a cat named Kyo who is part Maine Coon. He loved to eat these huge guppies that we get him. Although once you give one to him he gets quite agressive to both other cats and also us! Lol but anyways this serval is too adorable and seems to enjoy fishing a lot! Great job with his enrichment play!!!
That is no cat peoplee, its like some sort of tiger/leopard i know its called a "serval" but not alot of people really know what exact that is, so just putting it out there, its not your average cat
@AlyssaShotgun "Teshi, a serval (wild feline from Africa), ..." - Upload information. I won't be mean and go on about the obvious here, but I will argue that a serval is in fact a cat. :)
@SteveRXMazda From a private breeder, but your will have to answer a ton of questions and fill out and application, and if the breeder thinks you can provide a suitable home, you will be placed on the wait list. Most breeders will only have one litter per year, and usually have around 2 kittens per litter.
Wildcatzoo, can you get a larger plastic pool? It would offer a better enrichmnent experience if the cat has to move more than 2 feet to catch the fish.
And for those saying this is sad. We have many pet godlfish/Koi and don't want to see them eaten by wild animals. But feeder fish are just that - food for animals that need live food. I do disagree with feeding it "pet fish" like Koi though. They are very intelligent fish and if raised in a pet environment, it is cruel to kill them...
aww thats well cute .... i dont know what your all complaining about ... cats/felions eat fish its natural ... i feed my kitten live fish its healthy for them
I'm not too certain on the answer to that because ive learned about servals more in the wild. Females are always the more placid and so most likely easiest to tame because they dont fight for territory like a male would.
but on another hand if you were to get a savannah a male would be a better choice. Due to a male F1 savannah being the tallest, wildest or most serval resembling of any type of savannah (male, female/ F1-F5) Also a male savannah is sterile and would not have accidental litters
also you wouldnt have to have them spayed which would be another cost of a female.ofcourse it would probably have to be an indoor cat that can play in the backyard like a dog rather than roaming around the neighbourhood and coming back. because like with the snake hiss. a savannah is wilder than other cats. and being the tallest of all cats it can probably harm another cat in the street as a male defending territory. so ive just argued the male/female differences (except what you asked) sorry
@tbmsnake unfortunately they arent just accesible like a domestic cat and if you wanted one you would have to have it for its entire life and it cannot be given to the pound or left astray.
I dont know why its legal to keep them in U.S. even with a need for a licence they arent like domestic cats lol.
i know. if you want one you should try a savannah cat i think its called. its a domestic/serval. and its just as good a hunter
I know of all this stuff, I'm still planning to get one. I just don't throw cats out anyway, I keep cats until they pass on and I think I'm gonna get a serval or savannah
oh ok sorry about what i said i just think its kind of upsetting when people choose wild servals over domestic cats, especially ones in animal shelters but seeing as people still get purebred kittens i dont mind that anymore. they would be quite dear i assume right? i havent even heard of them being owned anywhere around the world until recently =D
im gonna da a research project with some servals in a zoo, and i a thinking of providing live fish as enrichment.. is this a special kind of goldfish or do you know any other fish species which can be used? which is all healthy for the serval to consume..
Feeder fish, you can get them at any store that sells fish. We had someone donate some large koi once, the serval loved them, but that would be expensive!
I'm an animal lover. I love cats have had at least one in the house most of my life. Serval's are stunning felines, and definatly would enjoy this sort of hunt. Maybe you should try putting some rocks or something in for a more involved game.
I also keep several types of fish. I know how easy they are to breed, so having excess amounts can be a problem. lol.
As much as I understand how much the cat's enjoying himself, I can't help but feel a little bit sorry for the fish.
They are apparently genetically compatible with housecats, despite the difference in size, as they can mate with house cats and produce fertile offspring. The results of which are called Savannah cats. They are a little(!) bigger than a normal housecat, mainly by lankiness, and have incredible jumping power.
Like any cat, the feline ends up owning you, so you have to be an obedient human to have a happy cat. Servals are larger, so they can train you with a little more ooomph. This serval once lived with an individual, and it slept in her bed with her. Why? Because it wanted to.
a bit tragic for the little fish... but nice nice video and marvellous wild cat
