I FINALLY figured out what it is about the intro of the original song that bugs my sense of rhythm. It's in like... a 15/16 time signature. That charming little background plinking that starts up the song drops the 8th note that would make it fit nicely into 4/4 time. It adds it in once the drums start up.

In any case I'd say say 15/8, but as it is a "compás de amalgama" as we call it in spain, the composer usually subdivides it, in this case probably at 6/8 + 9/8. It's like the famous 5/4 of Take Five, it's really a 3/4+ 2/4. I could be wrong, but think about it! ;-)

In actuality, after reflection, I'd call the intro as a bar of fast 4/4, followed by 7/8, three times, then a fast 4 with the eighth note for the dingly part. That solves the confusion of the possibility of 15 on top being a compound meter of 5 beats when that's not intended.
