@ddd1600 All I can say regarding landlords is you never know until you ask. Most of them couldn't care less, but if explained properly, the landlord might see things your way. The important thing to know before you try this is whether you internet provider says higher speeds are possible, or not. My provider said they were, so I gave this a go. It worked for me. Here we are almost 2 years later, and I have no complaints.
There are some steps you ought to take. 1) Get tech support to give you some ideas on what's happening. If tech support can't clue you, then 2) see if the phone company can shed any light with the actual phone line. I put a cat5 dedicated dsl line from my splitter to my modem as a final part of my installation. It STILL slows down sometimes, but not so much. I hope that helps.
BTW, I am now DIYMakerman. I keep the jwwm2 channel open, but I won't be posting new videos to that account.
When you connect your DSL to a DSL splitter like you have does your modem read to you that you have 1.5mbps? Because AT&T said I can only get 768kbps where I live but the person next door somehow has 1.5mbps and he doesn't know how.
@timestrail That's exactly what happened in my case, and is one reason I decided to do things this way. I suggest you do some tests, starting with connecting your modem directly to the NID (powered, of course) with a very short phone cord. Then get your ISP support to ping the modem. If things are substantially faster, this will almost certainly work for you.
@jwwm2 It made no difference either way, I tried it both ways. But we have phone lines that are 20 years or more old. And I also have a phone line that goes out to the street very very low, it hits the ground. Would any of these effect the ability to make a difference when connected directly to the NID?
@timestrail Seems likely these conditions are factors. Have you talked with your neighbor, and looked at his installation? You might also see if a private phone installer can give you a free assessment so you can get some clues. 768 kbs sucks, so I wish you luck on this...
@jwwm2 No I haven't, but thanks for the info, and the video upload its been really helpful and has given me hope I can end the sluggish speed somewhat. I'll be sure to check and see how my neighbor has his set up.
He re-wired the phone lines in his house with brand new phone wire, and I'm not sure if they put in a new splitter when his power lines snapped in half. But thanks again man, it's been helpful.
@philipkimbrell90 yeah that's fine.. you'll notice a very little difference while going through speed test sites as it goes through servers etc.... Some modems let you see the actual speeds. Check if there is a way. Some company give you a little extra speed so when you go through speed test sites, it will show what you're paying for (I'm a tech in Canada, and that's what they do sometimes).
@ jwwm2. Thanks! I will post progress or lack there of. One question when I test at NID would I plug a filter in at the NID and the line to modem? In any event I anticipate improvement with the filter and a dedicated cat5.
Thank you for your video! We ditched our satellite TV in favor of streaming content ie Netflix, Amazon, iTunes, etc. So we rely heavily on our DSL connection. We pay for 10 Mbps but average 6. I know we will never see the full 10 but hoping for some improvement. I will first test the line at the NID to see what actually is coming in. However I am going to install the splitter and run Cat5 straight to modem. I am sure their will be some improvement over pots wiring. Not to mention the shitty f
@wrz0170 Well, I basically did the same thing when I stopped paying $80 a month for Comcast. I also put up an OTA antenna which picks up 38 local channels. Watch my vids on that subject. Anyway, good luck, and I hope you get better speeds.
hey jwwm2, I was checking out your video and was wondering if you could give me some feed back with my connection....I need to install a new phone line, but I have some questions. If it's not much of a trouble, could you help me?
@jwwm2 Ok this is the deal: I had a dsl connection together with my mother's phone line, but I wanted to separate the internet from my moms account, so I canceled it. The phone company told me that I needed a second phone line in order to connect dsl under a new account. I checked all over the place and couldn't find another phone jack. I searched online how to install a second phone line, and they talked about the four cable colors and stuff. I opened the jack, and my surprise was:
@jwwm2 My surprise was that it only had three colored wires. I surfed the web again, and it seems like it is a really old connection. Now, I'm thinking that probably I will have to re-run modern cable from the box out of the apartment. What are your suggestions? Also, can I open that box without the phone's company permission? sorry for the long comment and thanks in advance.
@Airvidal Check with your landlord before doing any modifications first. That would be more important than tthe NID. Now, when I first moved where I am now the phones weren't connected. Phone guy wanted to charge me $45 for each jack (4) to hook it up. I said "See Ya!" and did it myself. As far as it being legal, I *think* so, but you better check with the phone company. Since they charge for installation I can't see how it could be illegal, but that's only my GUESS. Good Luck.
@danutaish Before doing this you may want to connect your modem directly to your NID with a short phone line (modem is powered, of course) and ask your provider's support to see what kind of speed you're getting. If it isn't much faster than what you're normally getting this may not be for you. I hope it works for you, but do yourself a favor, and take the step I just suggested. Thanks for your kind words, and I hope all your projects are successful.
not using ie8 would make your web browsing so much faster...and i think those boxes are owned by the telco- they might think your trying to cheat them.
@bestSVMS Using or not using ie8 won't increase data speed. That's hardware, not software. Telco can think whatever they like, but only if they're capable of thinking, which is doubtful given their discussions with me. Their responsibilities don't include how I hook up my phones, and that includes my DSL splitter. It's 100% legal to hook one of these up. I also discussed this with my provider, and they said it was worth trying, so I guess they might know if it's illegal.
@jwwm2 i know ie8 doesnt increase data download rate but it improves your page rendering time and overall just improves your browsing experience. and its more secure. ATT is not known for intelligent thinking... And its not that what you are doing is illegal, but they might think you are trying to splice in something and steal services or something. We all know how media companies are... He bought a dvd---- he must be trying to distribute it SUE!!!!
Thanks for the fast reply. Supposedly, I got the "elite" 6mbps speed but I've been getting 3+mbps only. I'll update when I get to buy and install the pot splitter.
@jwwm2 I installed the splitter a week ago and I didnt see any improvement when using 2wire.com speed test. However when I do dslreports tests i get mix results through different server locations. My fastest is 4mbps.
@ced4dg That seems odd... Only way to be sure you're getting an improvement would be to check at both locations again, hook DSL back up to the NID, and check again. A pain in the ass, but it might show something. Also, I hooked everything up a few times, and the results varied slightly. You know this, but I'll say it anyway: Everything has to be neat, and clean, with good connections.
@ced4dg 2wire modem suck buy your own dsl modem and the speed will improve thear box or crap i had get a rooter it was a pain to get working on thear shity rooter
@ced4dg depends on what you need for me i go etho only modem and use a good rooter the combo dsl rooter dnt do good from my test any cheap dsl modem that etho only work fine it when you go with cheap rooter combo i go witha netgear or a linkys dsl combo modem
@ced4dg That's gonna depend on a few things. If you already get the speed your ISP promises, then this probably won't help you. If it's slower than that, then it MIGHT. Also, some ISP's pump additional data speed thinking that in your area you'll get what you pay for, but you may be able to crank out a little more if you try this. Still, there are no guarantees. It's maybe yes, maybe no. In my case it was worth a $40 bet. If you do this, please let us know what happens.
'looks legit. My landlord would never let me do this though I think these boxes are in a locked utilities closet on my floor.

Hi!
Was your DSL connection sold without any sort of Splitter?
Because, since the Germen Telekom introduced A-DSL in germany in 1999, they sold their T-DSL and ISDN package with a standart Splitter.
The speed at that time was 768kb/s and after a little update 1024.
I didn't even know that DSL could work without a Splitter.
So cheers and have fun ;-)
PS: Now i have a 100mbit down and 6mbit up connection over the cable net. I think DSL is outdated
