i was born with selective mutism its hard and still is hard for me i learned sign language at the age of 16 which made it a bit easy to coummacte to other people mam tell them what am saying am 23 now and i stiil only talk to my mam, sister my one best friend and can olny anwser questions with yes or no to 4 other people
Wow. I thought i wuz the only person who has selective mutism. I had it since i started school, and still have it after graduating in 2011. I only talk to my parents, my 2 sisters, my nephew, and 2 cousins. Never at school. Though i do in public if i'm with my family, but not to any strangers (though i'm starting to NOW). Sometimes when i get bullied, i start a physical fight with them. Counsellors don't know how to help me. In kindergarden i used to hide under the desks.
it is easy for me to say AND do. Its all about how much you want it. IF he dosent want to get bullied anymore he should do extra curriculars and actually talk instead of being a lonely socially deprived person
hi every one, my name is Els and i'm writting a paper about selective mutisme.
I think it is verry important to give people the awerness about this topic. If you want to tell me your personal story be free to contact me. I have some diffulcties with finding concrete and true consequences for this fobia.
Trying to understand. Do these children want to talk but cannot or do they choose not to talk because it triggers stress for them? Seems to me Red is handling it well and is at an age when she can ask for help if she wants to overcome the mutism. Perhaps it's a coping mechanism for her and if she overcomes it before she's ready, she'll have to adapt another coping mechanism. That could be anything from nail biting to anorexia.
@witjunkie It is most definitely a coping mechanism. A child suffering from this condition cannot understand it either. It certainly is not planned. I think, having been this way as a girl, it's the only way we feel we can control too much stimulation going on around us. We definitely are left looking in from the outside and find it impossible to get into the mix. In some ways it's not even desirable. I had such a soft voice in school and couldn't bear to answer questions because of it.
@em129836 Oh trust me everything that I hold back, gets unleashed on my husband. All that silence has to go somewhere. And I don't have one problem talking/yelling to/at him.
Proverbs 17:27-28 27.He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit. 28. Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.
1 Peter 3:4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. ( I think we are special )
@jaiBavet Vaccination = has done nothing to affect mental health. ''Fucking idiot kids'' I'm sure the people with asperger's who have won nobel prizes are fucking idiots. You're the fucking idiot.
i am selectively mute, but i am growing away from it too. i started talking a little bit since the new years began. the only setting i don't talk in is in school, when someone speaks to me it can be a havoc. my teachers are helping and i am starting to talk a lot now... i can be a chatterbox when i whisper, i even once spoke with my regular voice. this only had happened for about 9 months. i hope i'll talk SOON! :-)
I am a selective mute. Calm, stonefaced, smart as ever, I can talk, but nobody in my school has ever heard my deep and booming voice. But why can I speak? I try to, nothing comes out.
@QuickstartBlazin It is a survival instinct. The chemical that deals with survival is over active in our brains. We see a threat when there is none. Matthew 5:5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
People think I'm stupid because I don't talk, the truth is I'm very brilliant.
I try to talk and be normal and it usually is semi-successful but I'm usually too quiet or come off as arrogant. The teasing has kind of simmered out but the kids still try to force me to say things and think I use signs to speak or I can't talk period. It doesn't help much that they don't understand, especially guys. My really close and understanding friends use notes when I don't feel like talking. I love them XD
@bonezillionProverbs17:27-28 27.He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit. 28. Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.
In order to help somone with this disorder is to let get closer with their friends they will feel much closer and wont be shy with them. My parents let me do that since i was 6 yrs old and now im 11 and i am much closer and getting out of this zone.
@AsaraH18 There is a big difference between what you explained you do and what is going on with us. In some situations we are physically 100% unable to talk. The only person that can understand selective mutism is someone that has it. Everyone else is completely clueless. Can you imagine telling a blind man to see or a deaf man to hear? We have an anxiety attack if we are forced into talking. It's like telling someone with cancer to get over it it's just cancer.
@selectivemutism2010 I completely agree. Only an a person suffering from elective mutism can understand a person suffering from elective mutism. - I'm suffering from it as well, and luckily it has been better as I turned older, but I'm still having a lot trouble with talking to people in school. A never say anything in the lessons, and I have no friends to talk to in the breaks. I have learned to live without the relationship with my classmates, -
@EmilieMarieLykkeDuus - but I would really like to say something in the lessons. It's important for my education, but I just can't. :'( It really makes me angry, but also sad at the same time. It's just so annoying. I know I can do my stuff in school, but I just can't show it for my teachers.
- To talk for someone with elective mutism, is like cutting yourself in the arm with a knife. You just CAN'T DO IT! It makes my stomach hurt, every time I'm just thinking about talking in my class. <:'(
ihave seletive mutism its realy had im 15 now and at high school year 10, people bully me alot its horrible i can only talk to certain people , im to scared to join in with things like in p.e and things i just stand there. in lessons i hide beind my hair all lesson.
@TASHxknt okay bro, what you need to do is take martial arts. it will greatly boost your self confidence and you will be able to confront bullies. Bullies are actually very insecure about themselves and project this onto others. All you need to do is show no fear even though you might be afraid. Fight right back and they will leave you alone.
@TASHxknt okay let me tell you it will get better. but let me in on a secret, if you usually dont speak and suddenly raise your voice, people will listen. If you are bullied do not be silent, get angry and clear raise your voice and tell them to fuck off. Do this extremely loud like you mean it, get crazy if you have to. They will see you are too much work and go after another person who is easier. Bullies are insecure, highlight their insecurities and watch how they react, then assert yourself.
@TASHxknt i was like that too, until i got to highschool and started working out and taking wrestling and jiu jitsu, then i started to gain self confidence and things got better. i still don't speak much to other people though.
@Benjamin028u20 you're disgusting, my friend has that problem and can only talk to me and the year 6 teacher from our old school. She says it hurts in a wierd way to talk to other people. The bullies just make it worse.
I am disgusting? Or do you know how to read? I am not a bully myself I am just saying that if you don't like getting bullied man the hell up and talk. Look I have A.D.D. but I still pay attention in school because I WANT to to good. If your friend WANTS to stop being bullied she should talk, and if it "hurts" then step up and take a risk, who cares if a mistake happens, people will at least know that she can be competent to talk.
I didn't talk much when I was young and I saw weird people (chld phscologists I guess?) It all stemmed from me saying something I didn't like the sound of so I decided I'd shut up cos I never wanted to sound such a fool again.
I told my parents if I could change school I'd talk but they didn't believe me. I would have though. It ended when I had a very harsh teacher who forced me to say a word or two. It could have ended so much sooner....
I didn't have selective mutism as a kid, but I loved to sit in silence and stare, especially at teachers I hated. It made them uncomfortable, I felt that was the only power I had over anyone.
