I loved this song then as well as now. I was also in love with Melanie herself. Last I heard she was still performing but only on a very limited basis. Pretty much still the same person last I read anything on her although that was a year or so ago. Thanks for sharing this so very much.
Roger Daultrey in an interview @ Red Rocks Amphitheatre said "I would only play the Woodstock festival if it where on the original site, what is the meaning if it isn't and Melanie would also have to be there!" references are 1) Roger's photographer (myself) of the day and for up coming concert. 2) master tape from the radio station the "Fox 103.5" in Denver, Colo.of this interview in my personal collection. "PEACE THRU MUSIC" the only way!!!!!
@dav61474- she was actually a two-hit wonder. this and "brand new key" were her only hits, and then she pretty much stayed under the radar, sad really, she had a lot of good stuff
@wingman572 -- She played at original Woodstock,, I think she was like 17 or something ,, had to get her mother to drive her there what an experience that must have been
This song has stuck in my memory ever since I first heard it on New York City radio station 77 WABC, back in 1970 when I was in the 8th grade. I believe that this song was also played on a music video TV series called "The Now Explosion" that was also aired in New York City on WPIX Channel 11 at that time. Melanie was a great singer, but I've always felt that her stardom was too short lived. Thankyou cleaverzl for posting this great song ! Thankyou YOU TUBE !!
I was in the A.F. listening to Melanie and wondering what the F I was doing here! If only we could stop the wheel we are on and rotate it back to those times when we loved all man without qualification. When we, were not perfect we were not different than we are today but we were more innocent and trusting. The Melanies of poetry?! Where are you!?
She lost her husband last year.He was producer to her sound for over 15 yrs. ...and I to was raised in a conservative home and still enduring despite the subliminal meaning behind the marxes hippy sixties
There was a song I really liked as a kid in the early 70s, and I heard it rarely over the years, but never knew the artist or even the name of it. So I decided to listen (daily) for it on Sirius radio 70s and 60s channels and local stations. I knew it was from that time frame. I tried to google and yahoo to find out about it. That was about four years ago. No luck, never heard it, couldn't find it. It's bugged me. Last night, I searched on Youtube, and up it came. "Lay Down" by Melanie.
What a beautiful woman...this song touched me so much. I was only 13 when I first heard it and was raised in a very conservative home, but, I knew I wanted to be part of whatever this was...I LOVED it! It gave me goosebumps...
@lauriejlin I know exactly what you mean~ we are about the same age, & I remember this song had such a profound influence on me. It still brings on tears, what an amazing singer. I miss those days, & the passion we all shared for peace, the environment, a "real" democracy, etc. What an incredible time in history. Thank you Melanie, & thanks for posting this important song.
@lauriejlin A combination of talent and looks rarely seen. Her passion came through like a bazooka. How could you not be moved by this song. People who are aware of her talent of course understand how amazing she was...but sometimes I wonder if "Brand New Key" had an undeserved negative effect on her career (I happen to like that one also). I showed the B/W video with the Edwin Hawkins singers to a girl at a mortgage company I worked at a few years ago..she was so moved by it she almost cried.
If I am correct, The Edwin Hawkins Singers are backing her on this one.
