P-Funk is one of my all-time favorites! As far as walking out on a P-Funk show is concerned, sometimes it has nothing to do with the performance. This summer the Ohio Players opened for George in Brooklyn. I left before the show was over (and it was a great show!) because I was on FUNK OVERLOAD! Sometimes they give you too much sugar for a dime!
@FUNKWADS This was "The World's Greatest Funk Tour," sort of an "Electric Spanking" tour, however unofficial... On this tour, you would occasionally hear a track from that album as well as the Parliament album "Trombipulation." See the live version of "Shockwaves" on this channel for more. Would LOVE to hear Icka Prick live, but don't have a recording of it!
Talk about transported back to high school daysWhew! Basement / block parties, huge refer/weed clouds, base-line thumping, parents banging on ceiling, turn that down or off! pitch black w/ red light, Puma/Pro-Keds shoes, giant afros, girls in skin-tight pants w/ vpl, grinding on u all night. The kids have better technology, but I think we had more funGreat post!
Even thought this tour was basically in a shambles and marked the end of the Parliament era, the band is suprisingly tight on this jam. I heard folks were literally walking out of the arena.
I saw this same gig about a month later in Atlanta and it was a shambles. Black Hole & One Nation sounded nothing like it does here. Zapp stole the show.
even though they were in shambles back then, now they still get crowds yet there sounds are slow and sound nothing back then. Funny Huh!I guess back then people expected more out of them!
@8biminiroad The fans were walking out because George's concerts alwys ran into late hours. Many times the fire marshall or the venue managers would just turn on the stadium lights to end the show. happened here in Jacksonville 3 years in a row.
@mrroye Only the true 'Maggots' are often left at the end of the gig, then the P gets into some more of the obscure stuff, which is a treat for us funkheads. But this concert in particular (the 81 tour), I heard fans were walking out early because they simply were not feeling the music. I know someone who was at this very concert who insists the Mob sucked major ass that night. I caught this show in Atlanta a few months after this performance and it was indeed a shambles.
Skeet Curtis is the original bass player on this song, even the studio version, not Bootsy. Great slap bass technique from this guy. He plays with Maceo's band as of now.
1981 Largo Maryland at the Cap Centre. As far as I can tell the only "Bride' on this tour was Dawn Silva. Although Jeanette McGruder may be in the house. But the most prominent female singer I see is Parlet's Mallia Franklin, the girl who introduced GC to Bootsy aand Junie.
I love it! Man, one of the many shows I seen them play was in H-Town and they played for 3 hours and didn't really show any signs of slowin it down until the arena started flashing the lights for them to bring it to a close! Thanks for all of your great posts!
Skeet my man, I have never heard anyone lay jazz on top of funk like this guy, if you wanna real treat check out his jazz solo on the parlet pleasure principle album...ok bye
too much funk, i nearly crapped my pants

If you can't feel the funk in this, your ass is DEAD where you're standing!
It doesn't get played like this anymore!
Check out the syncopation of this groove!
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thunderous, percussive bass, with flying off the track guitar scratch, you have to be deaf, or dead, not to feel the power of this!

yeah I'm pretty sure there is Skeet's bass guitar on the original recording as well as Bernie's keyboards.

no it's junie morrison or bernie on bass synth. 100% certain.
