@somerandomer It would but you need balance in the second row. One big athletic rangy type such as Lawes or Gray (I prefer Gray), and a hard as nails ****** for the dirty work. Bradley Davies seems to fit the bill in that regard.
@Scapa25 Possibly, and I'd have to agree that Gray is probably ahead right now (sadly, as an England fan), but while they both have the pace to run round the field like extra back rowers, that doesn't necessarily mean they're compromising elsewhere. Plus they'll be up against a very athletic second row in Australia this time.
@somerandomer True about the opposition. I just think the balance is needed, Gray spends a lot of time in midfield where he causes mayhem, he can and does work well close in a Davies type player seems more suited to the task.
@Scapa25 You may be right about that, but I would love to see the Lions go there with an athletic pack and run them off their feet. Something like Healy, Best, Jones, Gray, Lawes, Ferris, Warburton and Faletau would be great for that.
@somerandomer The Aussie weakness is the pack, we need to have them on toast at the set piece and the loose. Possibly Cole at TH (form TH changes a lot, none really seem to have it), Davies for Lawes (he'd bench) and Denton for Faletau should provide a harder edge.
@Scapa25 Yeh Cole/Murray/Jones/Ross are all pretty close in the set piece, but I think the Aussie scrum has improved a lot. Too soon to go for Denton (he has about 15 tests to change that before the tour). I'm not sure he'd be give more of an edge than Faletau though, and there's always Heaslip. We're also likely to have a very large, powerful backline this time, with guys like Philips, Roberts, North, Tuilagi and Bowe all contenders for test shirts, so across the pitch we should outmuscle them.
@somerandomer Denton should be ready, nothing phases the guy. 18 months ago he was playing for a local club in a public park while sending videos of himself to the SRU. Worth it though as he got his contract. A combination of him, Ferris and Warburton (Rennie an outside bet, ridiculously good poacher) would be savage. The backline should handle itself, not sure about the 13 jersey though. BOD ain't getting any younger and I'm not overly convinced by Tuilagi, good player though he is.
@Scapa25 Out of interest what is it about Tuilagi you're not sure about? He's fast and incredibly powerful, with surprisingly good hands. At the world cup he had to resort to trying to do it all alone a bit, but he's an amazing prospect. I'd imagine it'll be a big fight between him and Davies for the 13 shirt.
@somerandomer I'm actually not sure. Just a gut feeling. He didn't exactly have Nonu playing inside him at the RWC though so I've no problem with him touring, it would be good to see him outside say Roberts or Davies. Let him show what he really can do.
@Scapa25 Rennie looked handy against us at the weekend (aside from not passing when he made the break), but I'd say a Gatland/Warburton combo as coach/captain is extremely likely, and this is all before we've even mentioned the names O'Brien, Lydiate, Croft, Robshaw, Wood (none of the English ones would be there now, but by then maybe) etc. Just getting onto the tour as a back row player will be a phenomenal achievement this time (although it always is I guess).
@somerandomer That break...*facepalm. I think it could come down to Warburton/Rennie. Against Pocock we'll need a real truffle hound at 7, those are the only two guys who seem to fit the bill. I've always seen SOB as more of a 6 playing 7. I'd love to say Barclay too but his form went for so long and a lot of his gametime is at 8 now.
@Scapa25 I agree on all of that, but once a Lions captain is chosen that's it really, and Warburton is the stand out candidate for captain right now. Him vs Rennie this weekend should be great. Anyway I've got to go. Been an interesting discussion though. Good luck against Wales.
@somerandomer True that. They should tour with two 7s anyway. Hopefully the rest of the 6Ns will give us plenty more to debate over. Good luck on Saturday.
@davidalexander1966 Jonny Gray is only 17 at the minute though he has been moved inot the U20s squad. Given his size and his rather young age it wouldn't surprise me if he ended up bigger than Richie. In the opinion of one Glasgow district coach he'll be a better ball carrier than Richie ever will.
Surprised there is not more videos for Gray on youtube he has great potential and really stood out in this years 6 nations. Stole heaps of line outs and made some great runs, hard guy to stop when he has pace. Hope he continues to improve!
Attention aussi au Jeune Denton qui a réalisé une grosse performance contre les Anglais.

@TheRugby19 Very true, Denton has huge potential. Physically he's already there, if he works a bit more on his handling he'll be world class.

If he and courtney lawes continue to develop they'd be an outrageously athletic lions partnership

@Scapa25 Incidentally, do you know whether Gray is powerful enough to scrummage behind the tighthead?
