That's the same case I'm in, I played Cb but not I'm outside line backer.. The coach like the way I move around, the way I cover up the pass and the way I sworm to the ball.. I had been having some trouble getting to the tacles because the full-back would always chop me, now with this video, I have an idea of what to do first on like tosses or sweeps
@Cobyt501st If you are a good tackler then that is a big part of it. Since you converted from CB you are probably faster than the other so use your speed to your advantage. Don't let the big/uglies (Oline) get their hands on your because they will be too powerful. Most importantly, give 110% on every play. Play hard until the whistle. Your value to your team is defined by your effort and ability to follow your responsibilities (contain, coverage, gap, etc.).
I'm an incoming freshman. first game today and 2nd game tommorow (playing A and B team). I use to be a cornerback, but they converted me to outside linebacker because of my tackling skills. Any tips???
@objectivebase make sure you work on your conditioning. I was/am a big man too and always struggled understanding that getting in good physical shape was the key. Us big guys are strong natrually most of the time, work on footwork and conditioning. The season is starting soon right? In the short term...work on your mental strength (visualize yourself making tackles, shedding blocks, etc.) . Also stay hydrated and eat healthy meals. Good luck and let us know how it goes!
@OMNIenforcer15 Unlike school you can't "cram" for this test physically. The best thing you can do is prepare yourself mentally. Visualize being great, making taking, running fast, etc. The other critical thing to do is keep hydrated.
Hi akahi5. That is a great thing! You showed that you have game and was rewarded with more playing time. LB is one of the toughest positions on the field and if you can improve your speed and agility you will be valuable at any skilled (RB, WR, LB, CB,) position. Your body will change in high school so keep working on your agility (play basketball, jump rope, etc.) and that alone, with a great weight room work ethic, will do wonders! Good Luck...get intense this off season!
I'm in 9th grade and this was my first year of Football, I wanted to play half back because I know I'm fast and I run track, but I ended up playing linebacker and was playing 2nd string middle withing a month and last three games was sharing starting spot with our QB who played right outside also .... Is this good or no? I just wanna get better at football because I've really come to like it ... any tips?
@akahi5 I hate fighting over positions, Same thing happend to me when i was in 7th-8th grade, All you gatta do is work very hard during practice and show the coaches that your ready and you can be a leader. Im in 9th right now and I start middle linebacker. Play every play like its your last play. ;)
Hi Mattydog097. If you are 8th grade they will find a spot for you. If you have good speed you can play linebacker or fullback. If you are a bit slower, then you will play offensive and/or defensive line. In any case, work on your conditioning, speed and footwork. If you are in good shape, can run and have good agility, you can play lots of positions and dominate on the line if that is where you end up. Good Luck and let us know how you do!
im going into 8th grade soon and Its my first year of football and I'm 160lbs i lift weights and am strong and a little chubby ;) not sure what position to play :/
@mattydog097 Im 9th grade 165lbs too. I bet your going to be Defensive end or middle linebacker. Im all muscle so I play middle linebacker. Maybe by the time your in highschool you will be a great LB.
this is a good technique but you shouldnt play the blocker the entire time you should also take a look at the ball carrier once in a while maybe like after you shed the block, because if you just play the blocker the entire time the ball carrier can cut back and make a play
Hi JFuzzman. Aside from studying the playbook, which some kids have a hard time with because it is just different being on paper, I would visualize it by setting up cones. Also...ask the position coach to help you, stay after practice, meet him at lunch, do whatever you can to get more exposure.
hey, I'm a freshman this year our third game is tomorrow. (we're 1-1 right now)
I am 5.8
I weigh 177
My max bench is 170
My squat is 220
I Was a DL and OL but now I'm only center because I had trouble remembering plays on DL. Any recommendations on how to remember plays I would study them hours at a time. We have a slacker at my old spot who already "quit" once. And I think I'll have another shot later in the season any suggestions?
@dabear u need to squat bcuz ur tackling especially from that position is all leg power..im an outside LB a highschool senior..and im 235....i h8 squating as well but its fun cuz u know that u will b able to power ur way thru tha offense..
I'm a sophmore at 165 pounds at about 6 ft tall. Bench about 155 don't like to squat at all. Starting at outside linebacker! I'm very happy but the one thing I lm not to crazy about is pass coverage. Any tips??
@Junior21896 Freshman football, and really any high school football is about desire. Strength and speed certainly help but it is your desire and effort that will make you successful. Your size sounds OK. get in the weight room and keep working on your feet. Good luck and keep us posted on how you do!
@xalnagz - Playing college football isn't easy even for those kids that have played most of their life. With that said, being a great athlete goes a long way. If the coaches let you try to walk on then heck yeah...give it a shot, it is worth the try. The focus, determinanation and hard work you put in to preparing and trying out will be very rewarding even if you don't make the team! Good luck and let us know how it goes. PS. make sure you are in the best conditioning shape of your life.
@Ikebrawlmaster waterboy. You don't have the weight for linebacker/lineman, you're gonna need A LOT more than some speed in you to avoid getting absolutely killed by the opposing linebackers if you were to be runningback. Guess you could go for free safety... kinda a pussy position though.
@Ikebrawlmaster Any position you want.....you still have a lot of growing to do. Just go with the position that interests you most, if you decide to switch later on the athleticism needed for one position translates to all positions. (90% of football is power angles and exploding through your opponent..it is the same basic movement for shucking blocks, tackling, breaking tackles and blocking).
In high school, technique, conditioning and attitude transcends size and speed.
@Shizzle109 - I was probably a little taller than you and weighed a little more trying to play OLine. I ended up being all state and on to win a national championship in college. HELL YES you can do it! Football is 90% desire, attitude and work ethic.
@Shizzle109 just beast it out with the weight room and drink alot of whey protein shakes , but dont do my mistake by just working out , yeah i bench max 225 and squat max 335 (im a sophmore) but all that weight on me has me running a slow 40 yd dash i ashamed even say it so just even out your lifting and your conditioning and youd be ok
Looks IOWA. They beat GA Tech because of this guy coaching. I palyed for Georgia Southern and these were the drills we used to stop the option attact because Pual Johnson likes to cut block
Same. but he's driving him back for yards. Damn I wish guys in JB all went down to tackle like that, they all just stand up in my way, by the time I go around runnin back is gooooooooone
