hes playing on PC, you can see the chat box, on the pc you can create your own server and just invite your friends which is about the equivilent to a private match on ps3 or xbox, so it might be a priv match

No actually it doesn't work like that. The server MUST be supported by a sponsor. Which means, if you wanna hold your own server you gotta contact a server sponsor and pay them a certain fee every month to hold an online server. If you just make a plain server without paying it will not show up on the server list. I think that is how it worked back when I played Call of Duty 1.
