How's this for an analogy, this album is Bobby Orr playing for Boston in his prime, some of EJ's 80's stuff is Orr limping around on one leg with the Chicago Blackhawks.
Elton... my Teenage Idol since I was 17 years old, in 1971 .No one else comes close. Just saw him again last night, in Saratoga New York. The man is amazing, still.. <3
@barnacleguy a gem to you for good reasons I'm sure but on this album Have mercy on a criminal is the one and yes before u say it it mean something to me!!
1973 was an incredible year for Elton! At all points of view! A voice, energy, songs sublime! I want a live concert of his 73 'such as "Sundown Theater" or another good quality that made the tour 73'. Find her, it would be bliss!
It's the truth about Elton and bernie'searly songs. They were all just the BEE's Knee's.Every album upto Rock of the Westies. That was piss poor. Thanks for all the great tunes Guys.
"Well life is short and the world is rough and if you're gonna boogie boy you gotta be tough".....Now, that's how TALENT-Bernie Taupin- would write his lyrics...And listen to Elton banging on the piano at 2:16....awesome.

sittin on the edge of me bed, plugged into to the HMV pounding my knees with two hand chord progressions, eyes closed and mom yelling " turn that noise down"
It took some time invest in some ear phones.................luv this stuff
for me nothing in EJ's career comes close to his earlier work like Tumbleweed, Madman, and Honky Chateau. The 80's stuff though decent isnt in the same league. Just my opinion
I have all Elton albums, but my fav is still and will always be the homonym "Elton John" (1970) .. just the orchestra behind most of the songs in that album, it gives me goose bumps. Border song, Sixty years on, I need you to turn to, and the well known Your song.
I don't think it's anywhere near the (unintentional )prequel; Capt. Fantastic is a hell of a lot better. Now that's a classic, in the best sense of the word really.
I did not say that "The Captain & The Kid" is better than Captain Fantastic. NO album is better than Captain Fantastic! But for me it's the best album he made in the past 20, if not 30, years.
"I'm gonna grab myself a place in history" - check.
"A motivated supersonic king of the scene" - Amen to that, brother!
Alas, another line also grew to be prophetic ("drink myself to sleep"), but that's thankfully behind him now (bless AA and David Furnish), everything else certainly came true in spades. Another one to be cranked, love it!
Love the Bobby Orr analogy....hit the nail on the head.

@txeire, you are absolutely right, EJ was at his best mid-60's-mid-70's. his voice was pristine until his surgery.

One of Elton and Bernie's most brilliant numbers. The two of them made magic in the early to mid seventies. A show of pure brilliance.

When Taupin was interviewed for the
retrospective dvd on GBYellow Brick Road, he says it's the album they're best know for, but maybe not their best. I think
even though he doesn't say it, that he thinks either this one or Tumbleweed C. is. Madman Across the Water is very
good too. If you`re an Elton fan, those are absolute must have`s. You can then
with some exceptions skip from Captain
Fantastic right fast forward to songs
from the West Coast, and not really
miss tons in between,

I probably couldn't disagree with you more strongly. I love Elton in the 80's (well, not all of it, but lots).

It's good, but I think Songs from the
West Coast is EJ's best effort, since
the mid 70's, respectably close to
some of the 70's work, far superior
to the 80's sludge.
