  • I saw him about this time at the Canterbury Court in Perth. No bogans, all goths. It was hot and sweaty and fantastic!!

  • @smallfox2 Hey man, whats a bogan?

  • @closelynibbledgrass I tried to post a link but it wouldn't work for some reason. Let's just say that mullets are a frequent feature of the bogan.

  • @smallfox2 Sounds good...I'll take 2 of 'em

  • John Lee Hooker brought me here.

  • He is incredible, love him and he is amazing. I saw him live and it was my dream come true. Could not believe the bogan audience they did not deserve him.

  • Some of his music is prophetic.

  • love this for 26 yrs now

  • trip without travel

  • my god he was hot.

  • Golliwogg APPROVES of this song.

  • he must really miss his hair.

  • the only thing about vevo that i don't like is the censorship, the ads dont bother me, so i think i will make a point of going to the vevo version unless their is cussing involved.

  • I think Nick Cave really is the Sandman.

  • I dont know why but he looks BEYOND sexy in this video!

  • History is art. Thumbs up if you agree.

  • Dear Vevo, Let me start by saying that your filthy dick-rich corporation sucks youtube dry of democracy and fun. Ever since these big companies started paying off youtube so they could post their shit...etc, we have been getting flagged for infringement every time we include a song we like in our videos. This is YOUtube, the place where we can post OUR videos. To people who want greedy corporations expelled indefinitely from youtube - thumbs up and copy this into Vevo videos.

  • @bones6868 Don't be so naive, bones. None of these juggernaut 'social' sites were ever created to be about 'us'. We live in a capitalist economy & capitalism is an opportunistic parasite. Wherever money can be generated, it will be. They don't give a damn about us & OUR interests. You can be as pissed off as you wish but it won't change the system. Try becoming politically active at grass roots level. Your message doesn't make a jot of difference here.

  • @irynski I do apologise for being annoyed at advertising irnyie, I shall keep my opinions to myself and trouble you no more. Thank you for putting me in my place. I just wanted to watch the video really.

  • @bones6868 I feel as though you are being sarcastic however, I do appreciate your irritation - seriously. YouTube is just a manifestation of the greater problem. At my age, I've had to get over initial reactions because it is impossible to fight the system. Again, I understand your outrage... but outrage exists within a context. Your outrage (and mine) are absolutely valid, yet fruitless in this venue. Don't stop being outraged and politicised: it's our only hope for regulating ourselves.

  • @irynski Yes I was being sarcastic, due to your spikey putdown. But of course we are of the same opinion, and I too at my age am just pissed off at the global clampdown and control of our freedom and movements not just in the material world but intellectually aswell. Orwell wasn't right, Aldus Huxley was, we are being bombarded with information/entertainment to confuse and dumbdown the multitude, rather than having it taken away. So they can't be bothered with the bigger picture. Friend not foe.

  • @bones6868 Apologies. Much of the time I don't even realise how spikey I've become. Hugs from the margins of this "Brave New World"! Indeed, information has become sonic and not worthy of being deemed information. Between texting and earphones, I doubt that anyone allows themselves a millisecond in which to dwell and analyse. Lack of external input = scary space.

  • I LOVE YOU NICK CAVE!

  • Sikth version>this... just. (That is a big compliment coming from the Sikth-loving me, btw)

  • i only knew this from Sikth

  • @Jaumur

    I'm so sorry, man.

  • everybody fucks vevo but i am happy nick cave and beed seeds back with vevo

  • Elvis is even cooler after this song and the title of this album. If he's still alive, he feels very honored :) I'm sure of it...

  • @jotacalvo ... with respect, if Elvis were still alive he'd be almost 80, and not likely aware of Nick Cave's musical repertoire.

  • @siegel4743 My comment was meant to be tongue-in-cheek. I thought that was painfully evident, but I guess not...

  • @jotacalvo -- so was mine. I probably should have included a ": - )" at the end. I wasn't taking a cheap shot at you. No offense meant. My apology if it translated poorly.

  • @siegel4743 haha thanx. I have since almost completely stopped posting comments bcuz of all the obnoxious people who have even wished me to die of painful diseases for expressing my opinion. I guess I was a little gun-shy :)

  • @siegel4743 Yet Cash has done songs with Cave, and covered Cave's music? I bet Elvis would hand his crown down.

  • @mbrinton -- You may have missed my point. I was commenting on how Elvis' advanced age (if he were still alive) would likely be a hinderance to his awareness of the state of affairs in popular music. I wasn't commenting on Nick Cave's talent. As noted in my reply to jotacalvo (below), it was just meant as a light-hearted poke at being old.

  • tupelooooooooo---uuuuuu :) go men, goooo!

  • wtf that awful advert before this ...Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr shame on you for the terrible marketing !

  • This song proves rock'n'roll is the devil and Elvis is the anti-christ, haha

  • @mesarocket440 Well, it says something good.

  • He has the most beautiful ballads & at the same time songs that make you shiver...

  • I have a wound in soul named "The Firstborn is dead". Can't listen to this.......maybe somtimes........this time.

  • @Pestigor I want what you're smoking.

  • @Minipokes So jump in the chimney :(

  • Yes Nick is the thunder god.

  • nick zimmers big brother

  • Tupelooooooooo

  • Best Elvis song ever and he deserved the best. He got it!!!!

  • This was the first Bad Seeds song I owned. DJ at the Batcave gave me the 45 summer of 1985. B side was Six Strings That Drew Blood.

  • @nobodyimporification I have Into My Arms as a '45; B-Side being Little Empty Boat. I'm honestly not very fond of his newer work; Grinderman is, although full of energy is not the cup of tea that I'd like to drink from on an uxorious level. I'm a sucker for Henry's Dream; Boatman's Call, Kicking Against The Pricks. I have Henry's Dream on an LP, and haven't found it on disc for a few years. I play Henry's Dream, and this old Teddy Edwards cassette of mine all the time.

  • Yonder on the ho-RI-ZON! Yonder on the ho-RI-ZON! Stopped at the mighty ri'ver! Sucked the damn thing dry! Distant thunder thunder rumble! Rumble Hungry like the Beast!

  • i love sikth's version

  • Raw, dirty, cool!

  • Comment removed

  • Distant thunder rumbles.

  • Suck the damn thing dry

  • Magnificent.

  • so delightfully insane... love him

  • He may just be a stick insect with a moustache but he is certainately the coolest man in the world!

  • @Django5198

    what a great comment..........

  • Everyone in this vid has awesome hair

  • This really is the type of music Klingons would listen to

  • SikTh's is better. :P

  • Nick Cave - Magnanimo

  • Tribute to Elvis in part. Tupelo! That black rain coming down!

  • did he quote the bible, as in jesus went to the crossroads in tupelo, made a pact withj satan, became elvis, and was reborn as THE KING, at SUN studios?

  • @theangryhands The song (as well as the album title) is a tribute to Elvis, born in Tupelo, Mississippi and the 2nd twin born. The first was still-born.

  • Saint Nick...thank jebus he was a reader.

  • Comment removed

  • Has no one mentioned Jesse Garon? Elvis' stillborn twin was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave since the Presleys were so destitute at the time...

  • This song may have been based on a real, tragic, event. In 1936, well over 200 people were killed by a tornado that struck the residential section of Tupelo, Mississippi. An often quoted story (yet one that is not quite honest) states that an infant Elvis Presley survived the tornado (however, there is no actual evidence that Elvis or his family were even involved with that storm.)

  • such a dark tale, one of those song/stories that made me a writer.

  • same here.

  • His best song. Even though his every song is his best song...

  • @Ellionart He has many best songs, but Green Eyes is definitely not one of them, even though it's in one of his best albums, although his every album is his best album. :)

  • Just two words: holy shit

  • this is the strangest song i have heard...either that or my pepsi max is spiked

  • strangeness is the greatest thing in the world

  • i must agree with you. a lot of people label me all sorts of weird names cuz i dont follow the crowd.

i guess im truly indebted to them because i wud die on the spot if i was called Michael or susan or bob.

  • @TheSnotrag2009 bet you wouldn't.

  • theres being different then theres being a wanker

  • @fartznturdz and I think you would fall under the second category in this situation.

  • give it a fucking rest

  • Nick Cave .. Brilliant as usual!

  • Eeaunder.

  • this is nick cave

  • It's Nick Cave, fucking idiot!!!

  • It's about Elvis.

  • eheheheheheheh....

  • my best concert

    merci moment inoubliable

  • saturday gives what sunday steels? WTF? this guy must take lyric enhancing drugs!!!!.... either that or he's just fuckin very good!!

  • to youfrickenstar, cave is a poetic and lyrical genius. listen to some more of his music and read some of his texts....

well saturday gives what sunday steals

and a child is born on his brothers heels

come sunday morn first- born dead

in a shoe box tied with a ribbon of red!

    end of story!

  • i think it is sort of a reference to his novel "and the ass saw the angel"........if you have not read it then i suggest you drop what you are doing right this second and go out and buy it.........it's that good.

  • apparently you've never listened to nick cave haha

  • Um, the song is about a historical flood in Tupelo, Alabama that killed many people, with biblical references to the virgin birth, Cain & Abel, and the return of christ. Elvis figures into the lyrics, too, since the "king" who walks on Tupelo could be either Elvis or Jesus, or both. Nick's fucking with our perceptions, as usual.

  • @newborncrone I thought it was about Elvis as well...

  • he's just very fucking good.

  • : )

  • vintage

  • taking about it kinda ruins it. none comes here to talk, just listen to the fucking song!

  • agreed. people just need to listen to the fucking song

  • if the art is great, talking about it can have an enhancing effect. only flimsy creativity is "kinda ruined" by discussion.

  • Wha?!! I don't care who does it! A remake will never carry the weight that the original does! Maybe they are great artists, but the emotions coming thru from the genius that IS Nick cannot be replicated. Remember...he's the original. They COPIED! And yes, this (and the title of the album) is about the birth of Elvis.

  • I agree 100%. Certainly not with a song of this kind, how can you hope to capture the spirit and intensity of something like this? Vocally you cant even dream of coming close to what Nick does here, even if you were technically a better singer.

  • True that. Case in point - Bob Dylan. Why do people think that because somebody can sing (Mariah Carey?) or play guitar (Yngwie Malmsteen) that they make good music? Oh and by the way, I jumped over and listened to SikTh's version: not impressed. All they did is copied Nick. Sorry boys but that doesn't make you good. And Nick did it better with 1984 studio technology.

  • Thats just mechanical music, speaking as a fan of heavy music I do think that some people have both technical ability and soul, which does impress, but having an individual voice, soul, and great material is what counts. By the standards of anal retentitive internet fanboys how many true greats would get a look in? As for covers, there is no point in trying to do a straight copy of the original, if you must do it, do your own take, something Mr Cave has done rather well in the past I think!

  • but unlike dylan or cohen or waits, nick is a great singer. his voice is stunning and he does have a singing background. he was a choir boy as a child.

  • i think both versions are great. i actually do prefer the SikTh version though cause i love Mikee Gooman's vocals, not to say i dont like Nick Cave's but Mikee Goodman is probably my all time favorite singer

  • I'm told this song is about Elvis Presleys stillborn twin brother, great song either way. Had a look at the othe version, seemed a bit artsy and contrived, i'll stick with the original myself.

Only Nick Cave cover iv'e heard so far that really grabbed me was Johnny Cash's take on Mercy Seat. It takes a special kinda bloke to carry off the emothion that Nick seems to be able to throw about like chook pellets!

  • Was that a reply to my comment?

I think you're sort of right about the cover... I actually prefer it, but it might seem very arty, maybe a little contrived. It's a very experimental cover, but it REALLY works in the album. And this is an album that includes one song of a man shouting "HATE IS IN THE AIR!", and one spoken-word poem alongside crazy metal.

  • Must say this is a good song, but SikTh did it better. If you like this, check out their cover.

  • fucking rights sikth did it better! sikth always do everything better!

  • I also want the same deep voice... whispering in my ear :P

  • @MarimarMantecon I feel ya on that!!

  • @MarimarMantecon Don't we all ;)

His wife is a very lucky woman

  • @MarimarMantecon Oh, I bet. I used to have to put up with this from my ex. (it was quite fun really, 'cos he is cute...)

  • looky yon-DER!!!

  • @rhenfield

    ahah

  • I wanr the same deep voice...

  • The Bad Seeds were so good at realizing these songs. On paper these songs suck. In their realization, they're great. Nick Cave was a genius for conceiving them, and the band was great for bringing them to life.

  • I want the same hair !

  • I got the same hair...but unfortunately thats where the similarities end

  • saw him play this live in july.spiritual experience, hes the greatest living performer.

  • WTF man if this kind of preacher came around I would be scared shitless and convert to whatever church he represented!

  • helluva storyteller!

  • HE IS SO FUCKEN HOT IN THIS VID - QUICK, SOMEONE TURN THE FAN ON!!!!!!....aaah thats better!!! THANKS!!

  • this song is hella trippy>>>I've never heard anything like it :-)

  • Anyone have any idea how the bass part is played? I'm dying to give it a go myself.

  • sorry cept i think its moog synth sampled

  • Can't help you. Bad Seeds use a distorted bass run through effects a lot. Experiment, that's my advice. :- )

  • *whispers* The secret is that it's played with a drumstick!

  • Nick Cave meets Berlin...oh yeah...great song

  • i always have love for nick cave!

  • Yonder onde horizon, yonder onde horizon!

  • OHHHHHHHH FUK YES. : ))))

  • LOOKY YONDEEEER

    a BIG black cloud comes!

love this song. it proves you dont have to play metal to sound totally sinister

  • the face he makes when he says look yonder makes me smile everytime, anyway fantastic song, his best one with the carny. yes.

  • i'm in love with him, i want you all know it.

  • I love this album, mans a god damn force of nature as far as I am concerned.

  • Reminds me a bit of Jim Morrison style.

  • Its like tom waits and Leonard cohen combined. As a fan of Metal I am proud to say this KICKS ASS!!!!!! And not just this song. TUPELO!!

  • I am an avid metal head and love Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and Nick Cave..I went to his concert in Toronto back in October and among the older crowd and pretentious artsy types there was quite an abundance of metal fans.

  • I was at a party and Mercy Seat played, and someone commented "This sounds like a combination of Nick Cave and metal band." and I let him know "Actually, this is just Nick Cave combined with Nick Cave."

  • Same here. A metalhead in my teens, now with broader range of musical interest. Cave is a really good artist and performer.

  • nick cave people, nick cave !!!......

  • I love the sikth cover....

  • same

  • si cazzo si

  • docale

  • Why hasn't he been embraced by country music more?

  • @RoberTastic Because of Music Row. The suits and lovers of shiny simple and stupid pop "country" would never embrace a real artist. Yet in the case of this song, for all of their Elvis Presley worshiping, you would think they would appreciate such a track.

Nashville can eat bag of dicks.

  • this 1 is pretty good. i like the SikTh cover better, Mikee Goodman's vocals r just amazing

  • one ohf the best songs ever.

  • Talent Talent Talent

Nick can you share some please!!!

  • thanks for the reissue-- excellent quality

  • Killer song

  • epic!

  • ... a big black cloud comes ...

  • This is song is one of my favorites by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. I think it is an absolutely stunning track in terms of its intensity, dramatic vocals, and poetic, story-like lyrics.

  • if you like this a cover by sikth is quality and IMO just as gd if not better! but then again cant beat an original

  • the cover is incredible!

  • I love this song

  • Even though Nick Cave has expressed his

dislike for the music video format and how

at the start he looks so uninterested, the

music and Nick's showman ship takes over

making a eye gluing and interesting music

    video.

  • Comment removed

  • this song ist so great, the video is great, nick is great, blixa too and also mick and mr.dreher and of course barry :D god bless these guys for this music, really soul-shaking, i agree and i cant stop watching and hearing their stuff.

  • one of the best songs ever made from humans

  • Nick at his peak. Looking great. Love Barry's bass. The icing on the bad seeds cake.

  • One of my favorite songs.

  • he is sexy as hell too!

  • He's so unbelievebly versatile! From touching ballads to these kinds of soul shaking pieces. Not to mention he's lyrical skills in poems, novels and screenplays. Seems like everything Nick touches turns to gold.

  • "and the ass saw the angel" is possibly the best book i've read!

have you heard any of his early stuff?

Boys next door was his first band before the birthday party.

  • No, i can't say I have. Yeah, I love it too. Very shaking and disturbing. The proposition is also a masterpiece. The monologues and the poems whispered by the wind... Amazing.

  • the proposition was amazing!!! i actually just watched it again the other day.

And the ass saw the angel is soooo beautifully amazing!! it has a lot of the same aspects as the proposition.

What do you think of the new album?

  • I didn't love it, but it's good. Night of the lotus eaters and More news from nowhere for example are greate tracks as usual, but it's not in my top 5 or anything.

They're coming to Finland this summer... looking forward to that!

  • Aye, he was amazing at Electric Picnic last year.
