does your hood have the threaded attachment or does it simply slip on the barrel?
if there is a thread then most likely you will have to have a filter with a thread to allow it to attach to the filters
ive seen filters and hoods used together with good results, so i imagine if your hood can connect with a filter attached then yes it will be a good idea to use them together, good thing with photography is experimenting :) try it out

lens hood gives you better contrast and reduces flare. it dosent make shots sharper or clearer.
