Let us not forget that Bob Babitt learned from listening to black people on the radio at night by his own admission. He listened to alot of the original funk brothers. James Jamerson is the man of bass !
I'm a guitarist by nature, but also a novice bassist covering this track as a performance aspect of a course I'm studying. This video has been incredibly helpful with learning this bass line, so thank you very much.
I am a super novice. so i like the original key much better. I feel like i have more control when i am playing at the first fret. It is easier to get to all the notes using the nut, but i have yet to develop enough control to like the way it sounds. I am excited, though, because i have learned the verse pattern, in C#. thanks so much for this video.
Not to criticize, but at 1:58 you say that this line is a chromatic walk down from the note C...
This is a diatonic walk down here. C-B-A-G. Chromatic would have included a Bb and Ab. Not to nit pick but I think when teaching, labeling things correctly is important.
Debo THANK YOU for helping me learn this line! I spent all day yesterday playing it over and over and over, with a big ol' grin on my face...i think at one point i was weeping with joy.
I address that at about 1:14 in the video. Since it's for teaching purposes only, I chose to play it in C. It actually lays out a little more intuitively under my fingers that way. Every band I've ever played it with played it in C for simplicity sake. Play it in whatever key you like.
Debo, so good to now SEE you! Gosh, all that time sitting around doing nothing in college, I could have been learning from you!! A waste! You are amazing! Oh, this is the "Hoser," by the way. You know who I am....haha.
Hey thanks. Comments like yours are why I post these. The fact that you've been playing that long and are still open to learning new things says a lot about you. I bet you're a great player. Right now I'm not in a band, but do some session and demo work as well as a few one-off gigs here and there. Thanks for the great comment!
Thanks again Debo! I learned the whole song in a couple of days worth of practice. Your teaching style made it easy for me to follow along. This is one of my favorite bass line songs

You da man. Diatonic it is. Sometimes when I'm teaching my mouth works faster than my brain. Good catch.
