Could the uploader of this video please consider either making this interview public again or posting it to the Charlie Rose website?
I'm not sure why all of Charlie's interviews on youtube have been made private, but if it's to encourage people to visit the official website, then they need to make the effort to make all of his interviews available over there.
I'd like to be able to watch this interview again so anything you can do to make it available would be appreciated.
It´s interesting to hear his thoughts on apocalyse now, but all that reality discussion seems rather confuse. Reservoir Dogs would be the least film to mention as being something new, at least if one doesn´t ignore the existence of Hongkong-cinema of which it´s a recycling, and although his point on the wrong motivation may be right concerning many Hollywood productions does it ignore a great amount of original world cinema in the 90s for what there was no need to stop watching films
"script that is really about life..." I can't believe Francis is making stupid comments like that. Does he really believe that the audience, let alone the interviewer, will accept these intellectual statements and not question them. Rose, did the right thing that any interviewer, and that is, he pursued the issue. No disrespect to him since he was the director of the greatest Godfather series. His problem was not facing up to his failures (Apocalypse) and Rose wanted to make a point of that
Honestly, Coppola's biggest failures are mainly mistakes of ambition. Call him a sell-out if you please, but be it One From The Heart or Jack, he's clearly a passionate filmmaker that has a personal vision for all of his films. I hope film scholars revisit some of his filmography: The Rain People is one of his very best films, and one of the very best of its era. Highly underrated. The Cotton Club, Rumble Fish, Peggy Sue Got Married, Tucker, and even The Godfather Part III deserve more acclaim.
What Coppola said about being misunderstood and your films getting mixed reviews has got to be true. Because when you look back at his films and the history behind them, The Godfather was against all odds. And today its considered the greates film of all times right next to Citizen Kane. Another director that was misunderstood was Stanley Kubrick, and today hes considered one of the best directors of cinema history. People Fear What They Do Not Understand.
What a douschebag! That guys a master and even his new films are different and memorable and I definetly respect him for what he does. Charlie rose, wow such a moron!
Not only is he an asshole, he is a dense, intellectual lightweight going up against a supremely thoughtful artist. He has zero sensitivity to the mind of a creative artist, just hammering away at which film is as good as the Godfather. Even after clearly seeing that Coppola doesn't think in this way, Rose hammers away like the amateur that he is. Look at the expression on his face when Coppola is talking...it says it all.
Coppola is a forward thinking, passionate, risk taking artist. Charlie kept getting him to judge his children (his films). That's for the public to decide. Personally I think "Rumble Fish" and "Tucker" are just as good as "The Godfather".
That's absolutely true. The only reason why "Rumble Fish" and "Tucker" and even "The Cotton Club" were so called "failures" is because they failed to produce money. This justs prove the tainted Hollywood system; the system he tried to fight and in some cases won. The films that he did in the 80s were great films and should be looked at in that way.
A solid interview. Coppola, in this '94 interview, accurately predicted the rise of 21st Century indie film in terms of ease and accessibility (DV cameras, HD), but unfortunately not in terms of content. Filmmaking is easier than ever, but the content is more unoriginal than its ever been. A damn shame.
"Apocalypse Now" and "The Godfather, Part II" are possibly the greatest of all American films. Too bad he did an about face and started hating film: look up his suppression of the full-length version of Abel Gance's 1927 masterpiece "Napoleon." It's a real shame.

When he talks about cotton club not being in the same league, we do agree but he sounded like such an ass.
