Although I am Taiwanese by birth but I've moved to the States decades ago so I have a very limited understanding of Min-nan/Hokkien dialect. I can catch a word here and there but not enough to decipher any song lyrics. 

Since this song is so hauntingly beautiful, I asked my mom about the meaning of this song in it's true form - as it turns out, it a bitter sweet song much like this video.

How perfectly evocative.

Sorry they thumbed you down. I kind of agree with you, although I've read online that it might be Hakka. Other dynasties may be Minnan. It was Yuan-Ming-Ching dynasties that brought us down the path to the Pekingnese language. It's all a bit sad really.

Taiwanese is a branch of Minnan language, in which Han letters (Chinese characters) can be pronounced either in literary or colloquial sound. Colloquial pronunciation is generally palatalized, such as: sui (water) > chui; sim (aunt)> chim; sing (star)> chhinn; siong (up/above) >chiunn. Thus "siu" and "chiu" are written in the same letter. Therefore, your comment is misleading. Study of Taiwanese can be very interesting, but you have to read many books in Chinese and various linguistic books.

我不敢肯定是文白之分。据我所知 jiu 意思是用心等待. jiusong (守丧）. siu 的意思是保住.siujailor （守财奴）bosiu（保守）。

守灯下正确读法该是jiudengeh 。

Are you sure ? "Widowhood" in Taiwanese (undoubtedly it inherited from Fujian) can be said either colloquially "jiu-kuann" or literary "siu-kuann" (ann stands for nasalization). I have elaborated earlier by citing many examples that 'jiu" and "siu" are etymologically the same.

I see. As far as I know widowhood in Fujian is always Jiu-ngua and never Siu ngua. It is natural that variation can show up in Taiwan. For example放心is always pronounced bangsim but in Taiwan it is hongsim. Thank you.
