  • ok people i have a question describe steve vai in one word?

my answer is inspirational. although i had to choose between that and amazing and wonderful and too many words to count that dont do him or his music justice. steve vai you make wonderful music and thanks for blowing my mind, ears and soul wide open

  • this performance is my favorite. the whole band sounds amazing. i like everything vai does because he is always evolving in different ways. anyone who says hes flash clearly doesnt listen to the soulful and meaningful songs steve writes. this just happens to be racey and passionate at the same time. steve vai always has a great line up. his band line-up always changing and always sound fresh after i suppose it must be roughly 25-30 years performing now. long live steve vai the legend

  • De antwoorden zijn altijd al aanwezig

  • toujours une impro parfaite comme d' habitude, respect Steve!!! : )

  • He sounds so much better WITHOUT that weird Billy Sheehan in the band too.

  • @7stringSupression i love billy sheehan when he is playing with mr big etc. but i agree i preferred this lineup sound wise. this was a great performance to be sure. love this version above all. the part that starts at 2:50 till just before he starts swinging the whammy bar round n round n round just sounds so much more magical to me on this version than the studio version. this song for me represents everything great about vai. you feel like you can fly to this song. amazing

  • Mike Keneally!

  • @DarshMustack Amazing how Keneally makes any music performed by him, look so easy!Guitar and keys.

  • Thumbs up if you can play the bit between 4:36-4:38

  • Thumbs up if you watched this video to see Mike Mangini play?

  • Mike Mangini for DT!!!

  • Excellent Steve Vai and Mike Keneally and all musicians

  • Who was the bass player?

  • @paulwall1981 philip bynoe

  • nice

  • Mike is te best!!

  • I love how Vai is throwing some mad shapes to a room full of virginal men

  • @LovingFilmmaker Jow Satriani

  • Bow to the master.

  • the Riff at 2:05 is da shit, i love how they doubled it

  • that strumming he does at the beggining... is he using his left hand thumb to fret on the six string?

  • @axeg No it's more like a mute on the sixth

  • かっこいいなー

  • best part of this songs is 0.05 till 5.16 ....Legendary Ending...

  • this kind of ruins the magic of the album version...

  • @doctordogballs Dude, just shut up, the Magic is already there

  • 1:30-1:35... This guy is a real Genious

  • Is that Vic Wooten on bass?

  • @AaronWallace

    no sirr

  • Could have fooled me, looks like him, dresses like him.

  • vai is the best because he combines his great technique with a great musicianship.

  • as well as good showmanship

  • ATTENTION---If You Like A Little Bit Of Guitar And A Hot Sexy Dancer Come See If You Dare

  • Steve Odd Vai :)

  • Great live rendition of this tune. Brings me back to the Middle school days. Love the 2:28 mark with all 3 playing side by side. Thanks for posting this video.

  • @SysmicSyke360 i like the cd version better, where is is doing tapping instead of making helicopter whammy bar

  • well.. i like this Vai song, this song surely make Vai more skillfull and great composing song than Satch, but i like more satch coz he make more plenty of beautiful song than Vai, cos a lot of Vai song is from another galaksi. yeah to both are genius on there own way...

  • orsom.seen them play in Melb palais great concert

  • its about the music , go listen to whatever shit it is you listen to and wank over their clothes

  • No es por presumirles . . . pero yo vi en el Teatro Metropolitan de la cd México a este Dios de la Guitarra

    . . . inolvidable . . . y traia esta misma formación musical . . . Alien Love Secret Tour de 1997

  • when was this recorded?

  • read video info , 1996 from G3

  • ..the funky grooves at 0:10..wow

  • this never gets old. what a genius

  • omg i want that green and gold fender

  • GAY....JACKSON!!!

  • Great Pernormance! But if the song was "Answers" I have to wonder what the question was! :)

  • 0:52 steve look like willy wonka

  • The other guitarist is mike keneally.he is possibly the best musical genius since zappa.Even Vai says that.

  • Then why have i never heard of him?

  • Keneally toured with frank 87-88 ,his last tour.Keneally is a musical genius who can play every zappa note from any song from 65-88 and can play every Vai note from any of his repretoire. Watch the zappa tribute 1991,at the palladium.

  • How the hell would we know? The rest of us have. He's not a big rockstar because his music is too eclectic for that, and because he doesn't promote himself that much. If you're good enough to replace Vai in Zappa's band, you're good enough to do pretty much anything, and Keneally is. He's also released a bunch of solo piano and orchestral records. He's a true musical genius. So quit the disrespect.

  • 3:35

possible one of the most amazing pieces of music ever played on an instrument.

    period.

  • Who's the guy in the bass?

  • idk, but whoever he is, he's jamming the fuck out on that 6 string bass lol.

  • phillip bynoe is on the bass

  • Thanks Boy...

But i prefer Billy Sheehan lol

  • He Is Phillip Bynoe.

  • 4:12

  • "I love this song...very jazzy feel to it!"

just to say satch did claim to have quoted vai that he hated jazz and did not like whenever satch and vai jammed and satch started to play jazz xD

  • I love this song...very jazzy feel to it!

Re: Vai vs Satch - They are both great players and very similar. But I seem to favor Vai (slight), even though he does get a little weird at times.

  • Vai vs Satch? Vai is a bit cleaner in his execution, which can come off a bit anal and coldly technical, plus he is has some strange stage antics (Live at the Astoria anyone?)

Satch has a bit more soul I think. Probably my fav of the two.

Both are getting older and making less impressive music.

  • Vai's clean sound is a lot better in '97 then it is now.

  • I was at this exact show, it was amazing. Vai blew it up.

  • where would music be without steve vai!? rock on dude!

  • Is it Wooten on bass?

  • No. That`s Philip Bynoe.

  • Steve vai is god!!!

  • why does the audio cut out near the end?

  • Because there is another song following: For the Love of God.

  • no not why the song stops, why the solo is a little choppy in the sound department near the end. You'll notice it at around 5:00 to the end

  • Guys Stop trying to compare them, Both are great! Thanks god they are different.

  • For any of you who don't know...Vai is the grestest everrrr...As Ali would say it.

  • Satriani was Steve Vai's Guitar teacher .

  • was.

  • Vai and satch are both great, who cares which one is technically the better player, and i would imagine satriani CAN sweep pick, but probably chooses not to

  • He can really well. He just chooses not to.

  • nothing short of spectacular.

  • figure it out idiots... one can learn the basics from someone and continue on to teach themselves new sounds and techniques without a teacher... GRAH!!!

  • But fucking amazing, nough said.

  • Satriani taught Vai everything he knows basically

  • hows that possible when stariani cant sweep pick or pick at the speed of light like mr vai. satrianis great but hes not really anywhere near as good as vai in technique. hes amaizing at song writing though

  • Satrani plays a totally different style but he did teach Vai a lot of shit, look it up.

  • picking reall fast isnt everything.........satriani's legato playing is just as fast as anything vai can do, and im sure satriani doesnt sweep cos he doesnt want to be a douchebag shredder that thinks theyr awesome playing an arpeggio over 6 strings up and down all day

  • I've seen both Satch and Vai live, and let me tell you this. Both are amazing in their own right. Satch has the best legato technique the world's ever seen, and uses it to it's fullest potential over his (usually) blues progressions. Vai is just technically amazing. Best all-around, in my opinion. And his writing is amazing as well, but it's really different. Berklee is pretty much the Juilliard of Massachusetts (music majors will know what I'm talking about :D). And Satriani can sweep.

  • Also remember Satriani was Vai's Guitar teacher.

  • Well firstly, Joe can sweep well. Secondly, Joe has said many times that he doesn't care much for strict alternate picking. After all he's accomplished on the instrument, I'm inclined to believe that 100%. And speaking of legato technique, I've never seen Steve do anything Joe couldn't, technically speaking.

  • lol @ saying satriani can't sweep pick. I'd be willing to bet that satch can speed pick faster than vai. watch the song TIME live. vai is still awesome though.. it's just that there are so many morons on here.

  • are you having a laugh. have you even heard vai play. your one of those people who bums satch. i love striani but hes not a techniqual player. hes bluesy and melodic whereas vai is techniqual. thats what you get with these players.

  • right, vai is SO technical.. he is more visceral than he is technical.. just like satch, it's pointless to argue this but have YOU seen satch speed pick? have you seen all his DVD's? because I have.

  • Not everything as a composer,Hey ,Salieri was one of beethovens teachers, look what happened there.

  • No, it isn`t quite like that. Yes, he was his teacher, but Steve gathered the Zappa elements in his music more than the Satch ones.

Anyway, I like Satriani more than Steve regarding guitar playing. Regarding music theory and composition, Steve is from another planet.

  • Satch is astonishingly great BUT it can get a little tiresome.Vai wears different pants, both in performance and as a composer but Mike Kennealy may have them both beat! ..

  • 2:41 = best bend ever

  • Dam this has got a good groove to it...

  • This remember me some funky songs of Jeff Beck.=o.

Now I wanna run into my Ibanez and play some =)

  • His best live,simply perfect.

  • 1.41. way to keyboard hahaha, im sorry mike is a wicked musician, but he looks like an accountant who's lost it at a fancy dress party.

  • Don't worry. He's since been replaced by the amazing Tony McAlpine.

  • lol then tony was dropped! see ya tony!

  • ROFL I agree

  • Love the thing he does at 3:09 with the tremolobar :D

  • i kinda agree, its ok, the intro riff is cool, but other than that and the live tapping and embelishments (not found on cd) its kinda basic.

  • yeah

it just seems like one of those songs that wasnt suposed to be more than a few minutes!

    haha

    like

    2 minutes

    as a sitcom was starting

    haahha

    like friends

but i couldnt imagine how bland it would be without that stuff!

    ahaha

  • I love how he freaks out at 3:25 or something

  • this is a better version than the one on the cd.

  • Eh? Philip Bynoe.

  • why dont they mention him in the credits? :'(

  • Comment removed

  • The bass [;ayer is Phillip Bynoe, and I don't think I ever heard of him since....dissapointing really, he's good.

  • 2:42 and so on i had to play air guitar it was just that awesome of a lick

  • Don't worry, it's natural upon listening to Steve.

  • who is the bass player?

  • Look at how nice and clean EVO is.

  • Yeah thats back when EVO still had a low pro edge, now its got an edge and a true tempremented fretted neck.Flo is the only guitar Steve still uses live with the low pro edge, everything else even Mojo has a standard edge trem in it now days.Edge trems are the best since 85 to 03 when Ibanez lost the patent..truly the best trems in my humble opinion.

  • awesome at 4:15

  • great music !

  • The lick at 1:30 is awesome. I was really annoyed when it showed the bass player during that.

  • Totally!!!! I was just about to post the same thing.

  • Very nice tone guitar!

  • no it is '96

  • this is at the first G3 in 1993, or whenever it was....

  • Actually, it was 11/2/96. The album and D.V.D. ( VHS on that time ) were released in 1.997.

  • yeah, i downloaded the whole concert dvd, its awesome(Y)

  • He looks like a young handsome man :D

  • The part at 4:13 is awesome.

  • Word!

  • Omg !

The quality of the video is better than before.

  • Amazinag!!

  • god i love steve's melodies so much.

  • Listen to Fred Frith.

  • I am a huge Satriani fan, and have only recently started listening to Vai. And man, is he good. I really like how there is a ton of bass and different drumming in his songs. Satriani seems to play it much safer in regards to his bass player.

  • haha the hat in the back

  • Mercy steve Vai, stop it you're just too good.

  • He is just a guitar god.

No other words can't better explain..

  • that bass player funks out...

  • I like this song, but the solo (not the last one) in the CD version is way better.

  • Great song, but man does that whammy take some abuse.

  • anyone who dosnt like vai is an asshole

  • C'est incompréhensible la manière dont il a envoyé le pâté en 5 minutes 15. J'en crois pas mes yeux.

    I love you Steve <3.

  • This is soo incredible! And the ending solo.. wow..! Steve Vai to the death!

  • i love the end solo

  • Vai is awesome, Kenneally is thoroughly cool (loved his Johnny Cash impression), and that closing solo is something else.

Always hated the bass in this performance tho; too repetitive...

  • The solo at the end is top 3 electric solos of all time. No question.

  • awesome as usual... :)

  • That hat is Mike Keneally. Check HIM out!

  • that guy's got a funny hat.

  • what a player!

    steve pretty much rules

  • Amazing
