A young Pete Wilson - Wow. (RIP). Wasn't referred to as "ABC7" at the time - it was "Channel " 7. Sadly, reporter Joyce Shank died in January 2011 at age 66.
When I was a kid, I remember gas stations always having the option of leaded or unleaded, but by the time I began driving (in the early 90s), every station had discontinued selling leaded. I'm sure leaded gas would have eventually died out even without this EPA ruling, since pre-74 cars would have pretty much vanished naturally by the mid-90s, but this change probably hastened the end of leaded gas.
Pete Wilson Will always be remembered for making the Hayward Fault a national issue. Also He was one of the first people on KGO who had to tell the Nation with Anna Chavez and Cheryl Jennings on ABC News about Loma Prieta.
@67tr876 Since the clean air act, effective January 1st, 1996, sale of leaded fuel for on-the-road vehicles in the United States has been prohibited, with possession or usage subject to high fines.
For older cars, you can get lead additive for your gas tank, but it's obviously not the same thing.
fascinating-- today that proposal to remove leaded fuel would have been debated ad nauseum on cable news and online. cries of "will kill the economy" on one side, and "the earth will explode in 9 months" on the other. also interesting to see the low key approach to the olympics, esp since this was an abc o&o. and susan gregory plays a decidely secondary role here.
If you look at the last Olympics There were lots of Contraversies involving Tibet rights , Gerogia-Russia War, and John Edwards affair during the 08 olympics.
@80stvthemes Have you seen other ABC O&O's today they seem more like a tabloid operation like KABC and WABC. Look at KGO during the post Van Amburg era they seem to be less tabloidal and more like World News in the Peter Jennings era.

Gas is now unleaded. At the time of this news story, it wasn't yet. I'd call that a fairly big change.

@80sCommercialVault no you can still buy leaded gas. And i would use lead gas over unleaded.

The following year, channel 7 moved to a new studio at 900 Front Street, 5 miles from the Ferry Building at The Embarcadero.
But I'm wondering, what's the address of the second KGO-TV studios in San Francisco?
WordUp4Life 2 years ago
Golden Gate Ave was the old location of the KGO studios

R.I.P. Pete Wilson.
I still can't believe he died so unexpectedly in 2007. I was just listening to him on the radio a few days before.

A-MEN!
And if you have "3:30 Movie" clips also... including the opening and closing theme/graphics, that would be great.
(Maybe they used Joe Raposo's music and the spinning cameraman?)
StukInBuf 3 years ago
I grew up in KGO's market and AFAIrecall they did not use the spinning cameraman but localized versions of ABC's national Movie of the Week intro.
