You know Zeppelin re-worked this song. It was originally an old blues song by a fella by the name of Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie..... I like this Down cover too. It'd be cool to see them do a whole album of cover songs.
man the people raggin this thing for its sound apparently have never heard a recording in a live format, let alone a demo. i'd hate to see their reaction to some of the hardcore punk recordings of the 80's
ugh, so in order to be badass you have to distort your voice, add a shit load of distortion to the guitar, have a crappy drum sound...noooo, nothing as bad ass as Zeppelin ;)
@phantomshtter Oh im sorry, I was not aware it was a "cover"... I meant this in reply toward a couple of users who labeled it as badass. Now I label you, "asshole" ;)

#Khole87 So maybe before making some dickish comment, you'll read what the comment says, instead of making you own interpretation that allows you to sound like some kind of know all. Cos trust, u don't KNOW shit, ur just a fan, and good on ya cos u got good taste, just don't ever try and act like u kno it all, cos u just sound like a cunt.
#Khole87 I've been writing about music for various publications for 5 years now, I don't need some little know it all, who hasn't even read my comment properly, telling me im wrong, I didn't say "this is Phil just after the heroin" I was saying, the abuse his body has bin through, and the fact he's a smoker has taken it's toll on the sound of Phil's voice, self inflicted or not. He's still brutal on stage, and the screams are just as brutal, but his tone has changed and at times is more forced,
#Kohle87, for starters I'm a year younger than you, don't try and belittle me, I'm not saying Phil is a worse singer, or lost his passion, it's just clear that his voice lacks the depth it had, drugs have taken a toll, and I'm well aware he's been off it a while, maybe before you start getting all fucking self richeous, like your some kind of guru, you could read the comment properly. If you listen to the live album, its clear to see his voice breaks at certain notes, and he forgets alot of lyr
@Mattiphone3743 Not that it's anything to be proud of,but I've had my bouts with various drugs and never had it fuck up my voice. Aside from slurring or slowed speech while under the influence. I'd be more inclined to think his voice is just beat up from years of screaming. You can't keep doing that for years on end with no side effects. =P
And if you look at recent Down live vids you will see Phil screaming louda and more badass than ever. He hasnt lost anything one bit only reached new heights.
This not Phil just after the Heroin, he has been off it for years. Actually it is far from it. This Phil at the time of the Over the Under Album and if you look into it probably Phils most deep and spiritual album after all of the chaos: Dimes death and the circumstances, and the Hurricane Katrina which blasted NOLA. Phil has been behind the microphone for 30 years plus and has abused his body yes, but he is still going stronger than ever. In this song he has changed his voice to fit the style.

phil and down really do the best zeppelin covers they also did dazed and confused in concert it wasn't that bad but if they really coverd it for real it would be awesome plus phil sings the chorus of stairway to heaven at the end of live shows. He's the only lead singer that can cover led zeppelin and black sabbath and it sound amazing
i see alot of people saying this don't sound like phil, but i think it has some of his early Pantera sound. it's him. if you listen to him enough, you hear the range he's capable of
It's a good effort but the guitars are too dirty. Too much distortion, not enough clarity. If you listen to the original Page has hardly any distortion on his guitar. The songs heaviness comes almost totally from Bonham.
@parallelogramammoth do you know what a cover is? down was putting THEIR twist on the song. why would they try to duplicate led zeppelins sound? down isn't a cover band.
@ilovechipotle85 Just because you're covering someone elses song doesn't mean you need to change the sound or anything. The Zeppelin version is a cover also, and it's miles better than the original. They perfected this song, then Down come along and do a cover of a cover and it just doesn't live up to the Zep version. Like i said there's just no clarity, they tried to capture the hugeness of the original with too many filthy guitar tracks. It's really a sloppy effort.
@ilovechipotle85 everyone knows "when the levee breaks" is a cover song best known by led zep. this is DOWN's version. settle down, man. i didn't say which was better (it wouldn't matter). both bands are terrific and DOWN put out a great version of it.
@fieryfather Do you watch me making any comparisons about phil panter or anything all the fuckin time no,then shut up idiot,i was just fuckin saying wouldnt that have been a cool thing to do im not even making a comparison but no sorry ass people like you come and bitch n moan ohh get over it pantera is dead fuck you your dead and say dimebags dead get over it to vinnies face he'll fuckin kill you
This song probably takes on a personal meaning to the band as they remain loyal to their New Orleans roots and they perhaps sing this song as it relates to the Katrina hurricane disaster of 05.
@bkm504 Phil produced the self titled album from Crowbar, and No Quarter was on it... I know my shit, and I know he wasn't in the band, but he worked with Crowbar on that disc.
led zepplin are gods of music...but the did get a lot of their influence from the southern blues that was around year before the were even born. Funny how awesome music come from us southerners then gets pick up by some foreigners and get popular and no credit is given to the southern musicians for it. The south don't need to rise again...we never left.
They should have covered the original blues version that Led Zep covered and put their own musical stamp on that old favourite - especially as they are from NOLA, the home of the blues and the place where the "levee" did actually break..... I like both bands but I'm not feeling this.
theres good led zeppelin covers.. tool did no quarter, crowbar did no quarter, a perfect circle did when the levee breaks, dream theater did a combination of the rover/achillies last stand/the song remains the same, i could go on. POINT BEING plenty of good led zeppelin covers.
Wow... just wow. Soon as I found out about this I had to hear it - I knew this would be an amazing cover, after how affected Down were by Hurricane Katrina. Phil sounds like Matt Pike here! A great tribute TO a great band BY a great band.
no album...down did a bbc session during the tour in 2008. other song that were recorded were NOD, Jail and Beneath the tides. along with an interview with phil
Led Zeppelin songs aren't that hard to cover for trained musicians. But to give soul/feeling/emotion to a cover version of their song that is hard... Led Zeppelin is basically about that dirty blues so you got to have that blues root and they got it here.
I think one of the reasons why I really love this version is because I did not expect them to cover Led Zep....You expect metal bands to cover other metal songs and black sabbath songs.....but it never occurred to me that they have/can cover Led Zep! Not trying to say that Led Zep were not heavy metal or anything but I hope you get my point....
Yea Phil with Pantera did some Judas Priest covers live and a lot of Black Sabbath, well if Phil was able to pull those songs off so I guess Led Zep isn't a problem as well;). Heavy metal or hard rock sound was a big part of Led Zeppelin but they made as well pure blues, country, folk, funk, reggae etc Good Led Zeppelin cover is always welcomed:)
This is the first time really I hear any band doing their version of When The Levee Breaks so I guess people are really a bit afraid to cover Led Zeppelin. Drums especially are hard to reproduce... Well, John Bonham was a genius!!!
You know Zeppelin re-worked this song. It was originally an old blues song by a fella by the name of Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie..... I like this Down cover too. It'd be cool to see them do a whole album of cover songs.

led zepplin are gods of music...but the did get a lot of their influence from the southern blues that was around year before the were even born. Funny how awesome music come from us southerners then gets pick up by some foreigners and get popular and no credit is given to the southern musicians for it. The south don't need to rise again...we never left.
swagwhore 1 year ago 4
@swagwhore Most ppl understand zeppelins roots, aka they got sued a bunch cause liek all of their songs are unoriginal.

Yeah, there are tons of songs that Zepplin ripped off from other people and never gave credit to until like the 90's.

Led Zeppelin didn't write when the levee breaks. Leadbelly did back in the 20's.

Smoking a clove and totally feeling this. What a fucking ace cover.
captainwungf 1 year ago
They should have covered the original blues version that Led Zep covered and put their own musical stamp on that old favourite - especially as they are from NOLA, the home of the blues and the place where the "levee" did actually break..... I like both bands but I'm not feeling this.
jjcale1111 1 year ago
why nobody makes a cover of Black Dog, by far Led Zeps heavier, most violent song
crashburnerz 1 year ago
theres good led zeppelin covers.. tool did no quarter, crowbar did no quarter, a perfect circle did when the levee breaks, dream theater did a combination of the rover/achillies last stand/the song remains the same, i could go on. POINT BEING plenty of good led zeppelin covers.
ANYWAYS - i'm diggin this cover, good work
freshpickedoranges 1 year ago
@freshpickedoranges Perfect Circle covered the original blues recording by Big Mama Thornton. Its an old folk song.
jjcale1111 1 year ago
@jjcale1111 really now? huh i never knew that, thank you.

Wow... just wow. Soon as I found out about this I had to hear it - I knew this would be an amazing cover, after how affected Down were by Hurricane Katrina. Phil sounds like Matt Pike here! A great tribute TO a great band BY a great band.

awsome led zeppelin covers suck most of the time.
hershysquirts187 1 year ago 38
Led Zeppelin songs aren't that hard to cover for trained musicians. But to give soul/feeling/emotion to a cover version of their song that is hard... Led Zeppelin is basically about that dirty blues so you got to have that blues root and they got it here.

@hershysquirts187
"zeppelin covers suck", huh?...
You ever heard Crowbar cover "No Quarter"?
It'll change your life!

Awesome cover!
I just loved the heavy riffs on this one...and Phil doesn't sound himself!
Great job on an already amazing song!
abhishekverma1983 2 years ago 5
They should maybe do Led Zep's In My Time Of Dying would be a good idea I guess...
backdoorloverboy 2 years ago 30
@backdoorloverboy
I think one of the reasons why I really love this version is because I did not expect them to cover Led Zep....You expect metal bands to cover other metal songs and black sabbath songs.....but it never occurred to me that they have/can cover Led Zep! Not trying to say that Led Zep were not heavy metal or anything but I hope you get my point....
abhishekverma1983 2 years ago 3
Yea Phil with Pantera did some Judas Priest covers live and a lot of Black Sabbath, well if Phil was able to pull those songs off so I guess Led Zep isn't a problem as well;). Heavy metal or hard rock sound was a big part of Led Zeppelin but they made as well pure blues, country, folk, funk, reggae etc Good Led Zeppelin cover is always welcomed:)
backdoorloverboy 1 year ago 2
This is the first time really I hear any band doing their version of When The Levee Breaks so I guess people are really a bit afraid to cover Led Zeppelin. Drums especially are hard to reproduce... Well, John Bonham was a genius!!!
