I don't get the end when David Cohen takes the drink and puts it pack. In all I don't understand what he was doing in this scene. Can someone explain?
@krustykelvin He was there just to give the appearance that they worked with Jews. Ultimately, he's not important to Sterling and certainly not enough to eat their food. Yep, antisemitism.
This is such a great scene. It is not just the sexism that struck me, but the anti-Semitism.
The reference to other Jewish agencies ("from my father's "village"'), the shrimp cocktails that are served, the fact that they asked a nobody to be present at the meeting just because he is Jewish (I can see no other reason for the guy to be present).
(1) The guy who plays Cohen is excellent: he never speaks a word, but his posture, facial expression, and movements make it plain that he occupies a lowly position and doesn't belong in the room.
(2) I can believe that Draper would be nettled to have his ideas disparaged by a female client, but it is not believable to me that he would react in such a petulant and unprofessional way. He could never have gotten this far in his business with so little self-control.
Am I the only one who is amused by this? I remember watching this scene and after he said "I'm not going to let a woman talk to me like this" I was like fuck yeah!
What is noticed was, yes, the insensitivity and I admired the adoring David Cohen. He's kinda like me, but I just saying that because is also out of place. If he is Jewish, he would also be the timid character that he his. All in all, all I mean to say is my hear just went to him as he felt awkward the whole time. AND all he wanted was some Tomato Juice, and Sterling just him that look and instantly - he was not good enough for the TOMATO JUICE!!!! EXECUTIVE'S TOMATO JUICE. Ah, poor David.
This is apparently just one of the many reasons women in America later burned their bras in the streets. Introducing Ms. magazine ads must have been quite a challenge.
hilarious! this scene and the comments!! dont know which is better....oh wait, the show. ahhh precurser to our inundation with spending "mo money" AND then he f**** her! this show is disgustingly dreamy
Go to the "Mad Men" casting call website...Then click on "Contestants' names", then alphabetically find "David Cohen" and rate 5 stars! Once per day! Get David Cohen back on "Mad Men"!
Are you joking? The rampant insensitivity was politely MALICIOUS!
They were able to be polite because everyone knew their role, but the negative intent was nonetheless very much present. That is why by the mid-60s and later in the 70s those who were the target of that malice/malevolence made sure to change the d'amn rules.
I think many people stop trying to be politically correct the older they get. To me, it's disturbing to hear older people say offensive things, especially if they're people you trust, but as time passes I find myself offending younger people! I guess we have to try to be honest, but not set in our ways as much as possible...
Sometimes being politically incorrect means to say the truth. The way things really are. We live in a politically correct aka false world where we must be hypocrites just to please certain people.
@senore01 I think people get angry with feeling they have to pretend in order to be politically correct because they are afraid of being criticized. If you really disagree with the politics, why not just be up front about it? There was political correctness back then too, but people who disagreed with the status quo challenged it. Pleasing others never benefited our society as much as seeking the truth. However, if the search proves you wrong, you have to be willing to admit it.
I am a person that strives to be as fair and just and compassionate as I possibly can in my own life...but to be honest I think you're absolutely right....I too am starting to feel the generational gap where what seems like normal converstation to me is completely offensive to a person coming out of university...and I'm not THAT old. I think essentially, as we age, we pretty much return the the "id" like state of when we were toddlers; uncensored. In any event...love this show...
Sorry. I think this is a forced, rushed, and not very well written scene. Don's "I won't let a woman..." is completely out of character and not appropriate to the moment.
Lol, nothing happened to him. He works in another part of the building, apparently the mail room and has nothing to do making the ads, so he wouldn't need to be on the show again. And yeah, Don's behavior is a bit weird, but he does have a bit of a temper...
Don't forget that this is in the 60's, women were supposed to be submissive & you'd find few men who would let a woman talk to them like that. Even though she has a fair point Don finds it slightly repulsive to be criticised by a woman. Stupid of course, but that's how it worked in those days.
Couldn't disagree more. I lived in the 60's. Believe me, plenty of women had their say, and MORE. It is a myth of revisionist "presentism" (everything's better now) that women were completely without power. It's bull.
...How can something that happens in the pilot episode be out of character? Maybe he changed later (which he didn't, look how he treats the women in his life in both seasons), but it's the first episode, so nothing can be "out of character" yet.
