Hey, thanks for this. I've been watching videos on bending notes and yours is by far the best explanation yet. I could actually do it after watching your video. :D
Thank you for the clear post. I just got myself a C harmonica from my dad (to learn to play it for my son). I realy like the blues style bending. Thanks I will keep practice my ass off!
this is the first time somebody actually told me what the technique is about. Slowing down the airflow. With your help I managed to bend a few notes i couldnt do before. Thanks.
Great Video. I was finally able to get a bend. Do you use a partial tip of the tongue just over the hole? I put the back of my tongue to the top, but that was the only way I could get the note to bend. thanks!
I posted some Jam Tracks for your vciewers to practice with. The G blues Jam track In in the key of G ( Key of C harp)(duh). You Lied to Me Key= E (harp key A) The sky is Fallen Key = A (harp key D) have fun all and post your videos....Ni9hem show us what you got...
should a chromatic harp be bent? I tried doing so in my Suzuki Chrom and it didn't sound as good, in fact, there was no sound coming from it when I bent the note. Is it because of some certain mechanism w/ in the diatonic?
Honestly, I've never actually played a chromatic before, I'd say if it ain't working I'd say it might not be a technique for the chromatic, though I'd recomend talking to an experianced chromatic player.
Damn, I gotta say I did love that hoodle-diddle, I almost stole that tip for this lesson, I've been using it to teach my private students, thanks for it, it really helps out beginers.
Adam Gussow says "steal everything, but tell everybody where you got it." I think that's extremely fair. I am happy you did not take my post as an intrusion. NTJ
As for arching the toungue does the tip point towards the top? how are you arching maybe a video that shows your mouth open without harmonica so it's easy to see..
You don't completely block either, you want your toungue arched in the middle of your mouthbut not touching the roof of your mouth. The goal is to block some of the air you draw in. So you want a block in your mouth but, still should allow air to pass by. Hope this helps, bending the 2nd can be hard, 3 and 4 should come with a little more practice.

Good explanation and I like your advice on mixing it in with playing rather than sitting there making it tedious.

Thanks for explaining the physical mechanics of bending, I think I might actually be able to do this now, with some practice. Thank you!

I have a question, when you're arching the tongue, do you use it to block you mouth or to block your throat?
I still couldn't get a consistent bend on holes 2,3 and 4.
Thanks!
