I'm actually writing this on my asus ep121 right now. The fan is completely silent, so I'm not sure if your tablet's fun is defective or what... The battery life doesn't bother me, but everyone's different, and I can definitely see why that would be important. The wireless card is awful though, incredibly unreliable. It disconnected as I'm writing this. Not sure if my card is messed up...
Honestly, if you're considering a windows tablet, WAIT FOR WINDOWS 8. It's designed for tablet use. The first Windows 8 tablets should be coming out early next year. Nokia is releasing a sure to be beautiful one in June.
there is no comparison. the HP slate is sluggish as a mule compared to the Asus. the Asus slate is the best windowsbtablet available. my boss has the HP slate. he tried stealing my Asus. after using it for 5 minutes he told me to order one for myself with the company card.
do you recommend this tablet with touch or the acer iconia w500? and which one is better with windows 8 ? and which one is more powerfull and faster? and better in games?
Inking is not loud becaus of N-Trig's software, but rather their stylus design and the movement they incorporate into the tip of the stylus. The sound also depends on the type of display the tablet manufacturer uses. The HP Slate and Motion CL900 use a glossy glass display which will always be louder for an N-Trig stylus. The Fujitsu Q550 uses a matte display with a special layer that makes it quiter. The Motion has Gorilla Glass which might help. Won't know until we see some reviews.
The best I could get was 3 hours, but that was power saver mode with screen brightness all the way down. Kind of defeats the purpose to use with everything turned down. Look at the Fujitsu Q550 or the Motion CL900 if you want something bigger than the Slate, but smaller than the EP121. Anything but the EP121 will have pretty slow performance.
You mentioned HP Slate is loud while inking because of the n-trig technology. But Motion CL900 also uses n-trig technology. Do you think it will be as loud as HP Slate? It will be very interesting to see the comparison between HP Slate, HTC Flyer, Fujitsu Q550 and Motion CL900. Thanks for your efforts...
If you turned all the settings etc down on the Asus whats the best battery life you could expect from it? I want to take to uni and use for pdf annotation, note taking, highlighting, use with a keyboard that sort of thing so besides the HP Slate's size what would you say?
I will be receiving the Fujitsu in the first part of June and will do a comparison between it and the HTC Flyer that I replaced my HP Slate with. Stay tuned, it should be interesting.
Hey Mike, any news on the Fujitsu or Motion tablets? I'd love to hear your opinion on them as I'm still in the market for a new tablet. (Handwritten on an X41 tablet)
@ultraret: l thought he did a good job of remaining unbiased. He simply said that his line of work makes the HP a better choice because of portability, battery life, etc. If I do upgrade from my old X41 tablet, the ASUS sounds like it wouldbe better for me. Or maybe that new motion slate... :)
You would be more comfortable with the ep121. I will be looking at the new Fujitsu and Motion 10" tablets releasing in May. The ep121 was just not portable enough for me and the battery life was terrible. The Fujitsu and Motion tablets will have a 6-8 hour battery life with even brighter screens with Gorilla Glass and more accessories. They will be running Atom processors as opposed to an I-5 though. If you want a full laptop experience go with the ep121.
I have a tablet pc with a 10 inch screen. I ordered an asus last week and should get it next week. I'm excited! smaller screens are nice for portability but i need just a little more power than 2gbs and a bigger screen yet portable. So asus is for me. i wish hp had 4gb or more of ram it'd be awesome.
One last question. Like I said, I'll be using One Note almost exclusively with it-pulling up powerpoints and pdfs on it. What I'll need to be doing is marking up these ppts/pdfs so I'll probably need to be writing relatively small. How would you compare the ability to write small with the Asus vs. the HP on MS OneNote. By that I mean, inking with smaller writing--is it clear on both tablets, which would be better. Sorry for all the questions don't want to waste the money. Thanks.
The HP Slate works great! It just wasn't large enough for me. Alot of scrolling, inking is pretty loud. The stylus clacks against the glass screen when you write. The speed is adequate for using Office Docs and the accuracy and fluidity is fine. I know others at my college that love their HP Slate. If you are going purely for mobility and don't mind needing to scroll more with the smaller screen than the HP works great! It was just too small for me. I will wait for a 10" like the Motion.
Thanks for the help. I was really hoping the Slate would work. Another question. All our notes are given to us in Microsoft Word Documents so as long as I can high light and add some marks up, that's what I'll need 90% of the time. Would you still recommend the Asus/not the Slate. Is the slate simply too small for this ? Thanks again.
In response to the last two posts, I would recommend the ASUS for inking. It is much smoother, quieter and the screen size is more indicative of a regular size sheet of paper. It is big and can be difficult to use on smaller college seats. The HP is very portable and better battery life, but I found it too small for OneNote and PDF Annotator, also loud while inking. I would recommend checking out the Motion CL900 as an option. 10" screen + 8 hrs of battery life, outdoor viewable. Avail in April.
I'm a medical school student with a laptop and I am considering the ASUS or the HP Slate. Essentially, I'll I'll be using it for is using MS One Note, Word and PDFs for my books. I'll need to be able to highlight and mark up notes in Word/ MS One Note. With that in mind, what would you recommend?
You should put a same picture on both tablets before comparing the screen.
Colors are more vivid on HP? You must be kidding :) Even on your video we can notice a color shift on HP when you move the camera. Dark colors are darker, but it one cannot see a difference between dark-green, dark-grey and black. So far, this review is not a "something vs something" comparison (which usually has figures and parameters and stats) but rather your own personal opinion.
@TEHEK1 There's also a significant price difference... $800 vs $1000(2gb ram + 32gb ssd) or $1100 (for 4gb + 64gb ssd).
Overall I'd say the only thing that's common between these two is Windows 7 (which I hope can be replaced for a more secure Ubuntu without losing much of a functionality)
That was a very mature comment! Do your own video and be biased to ASUS if you like. I like both of these tablets and recommend them both to my customers based on their needs. For my particular needs the HP Slate works the best, but everyone has different needs.
I generally like Asus (own a great ASUS Netbook) but I don't know what they were thinking, making a Tablet this HUGE. Anything larger than an iPad seems to defeat the point of having a portable Tablet.
Battery life too, was a negative. The Fan is also a slight negative.
By comparison, I've been very pleased with my HP Slate. It's been a great user experience. my only issues (minor ones) have been the the low viewing angle, and the 'clacking' of the pen.
If you are on a mixed WiFi network (A/B/G/N) try going into you wireless card properties and setting and advanced settings and change the wireless mode selection to b/g only. I noticed my ASUS was having problems with all videos youtube, Netflix, Crackle etc. Once I changed it to b/g it has been nothing but smooth video. I would assume this would help the Slate 500 also. The studder is not the machine its the router.
My calibration was off to until I reset them. They are much more accurate with what ever the defaults are. I originally calibrated out of the box without even trying the defaults.
Yes, I bet there will be different experiences for different users. I might have had a bad unit. These are mass produced after all. I-am glad you are happy with yours # think it is "awesome" It was just too big for my needs. I use my HP Slate and my iPad in tandem which works great for me.
I was just running it with a 1280 movie, office, angry birds and skype, IM's and Kindle...I was wondering when the fan would turn on. So, I put my ear to it, yes the fan was on, I just couldn't hear it! Very, very quite!
I never said the HP Slate was comparable to the ASUS. I said it was powerful enough to handle basic tasks like Office, OneNote and web browsing. I know the difference between an Atom processor and an I5. I did not want to keep the HP, but the ASUS was too big and the battery life was awful. These are the only two options right now and the HP works for me. Do you even have the ASUS? Or do you just like making educated guesses without actually using the products yourself.
Looks like HP paid you dearly to kiss their butt . The HP is a little bit under powered are you serious, your comparing I5 with a 2 year old atom Z processor with a lame gma500 video chipset. The Asus uses IPS screen which is the best you can get in a tablet this size plus a 4gb memory and pressure sensitive wacom active digitizer. You can set the asus in power saver settings and would still kick the butt of HP under performance mode.
The Asus is double the price of the HP an the best Hardware you can get for money. The HP is the best silent fast none-fan powered win7-tablet with all you need. It comes with a dock, a case and a stylus an a long battery life.
I'm still not sure, which one i want to have. battery time, ok let's face it, I'll have it plugged in all the time. the most interesting thing an the Asus is it unbeaten Intel HD Graphics card, which can play every game just fine. The HP (as other vid's shown) doesn't have any Power in it (Flash Games are just ok for that) .
The HP is the most portable one, of corse, it's way smaller and handier. It will be the better ipad but for working choose the Asus, it has a right click whith de Bamboo
The fan does not run constantly. It will run when doing browsing and playing videos. If you are just inking you should be fine. Every unit will probably be different as well. Touch is excellent. I just don't find it to be as accurate when tapping smaller items as I do on the Hp Slate.
The touch is amazing on the Asus! I also love the size, it works for me! I don't have any problems running videos on mine. I also don't hear the fan on mine. I do agree with the USB ports. What a pain. Other than that....Love it! I also have the Evo! Love it as well. *Ü*
@angelappear Hi, have you tried to put your Asus under full load, playing 1080p, to test if the fan kicks in? I plain to use it mainly for graphic work, Photoshop, Artrage etc, so i'd like to know if just doing this simple task (just brushstrokes, no filters) makes the fan to become audible. Thanks.
I'm actually writing this on my asus ep121 right now. The fan is completely silent, so I'm not sure if your tablet's fun is defective or what... Hey Matt,
Thanks for the video, I was wondering about the size differences. It sounds like the Slate is much more portable but the ASUS has a bigger screen.
I primarily use my X41 tablet for taking notes in OneNote. It sounds like I would like the ASUS better, since I feel cramped on the 12.1" screen.
Also, I hear the YouTube has anti-shake post-processing that can be helpful for these cell-phone videos.
Regards.

@you2449 For an artists the size is perfect.
12" is almost as big as A4 sheet. Drawing is much more comfortable (as well as touching)
It has incredible colourful screen with IPS matrix.
Graphics require top-notch processing power most of the time but Intel iCore5 comes at a price of battery life.
So far it's the ONLY tablet of this format that features pressure-sensitive Wacom.
Low viewing angles are ok for you, but not for someone who works with colors.
In the end, it just not for your needs
