Tracer rounds lose mass as they travel so they drop a lot faster than normal.

This is one of the many many many reasons tracers aren't used in every gun like video games make it seem. Tracers are used primarily in heavy machine guns to help the gunner see where he's shooting since he's not going to be looking down the sights.

I always give them the empty case. I let them get used to the scope eye relief, dry fire it a time or two, then put one downrange. I feel just about as good as them. Its even better when the person never fired a rifle before! Look up "Jordan's Jackhammer" for my other 50 target rifle.

The .50 BMG has a muzzle velocity of about 850 mps. The bullet hit the hill after 2.5-3 seconds. That places the hill about 2125-2550 m away. Yes, the bullet would drop that much after traveling 2 km.

It has nothing to do with the size of the round. The bullet is a tracer and has a phosphorous or magnesium compound in the base that lights after it leaves the muzzle.
