right now im feeding my 11 month old toy poodle royal canin. she is itchy all the time but i dont know what good dog food brand i should switch too. :(
I disagree that raw is the cheapest. I raise dogs. I have 3 Cane Corsi (Italian Mastiffs) and 2 Newfoundlands. I do not feed CHEAP dog food, and I go thru about 50 pounds of dog food every week. I would love to feed a raw diet, but there is no way it would be cheaper then store bought dog food. If someone has the secret to how to make this more affordable, please let me know.
Royal Canin is a joke so is Wellness! Royal Canin has corn, psyillium (bulk and nothing more), and cellulose, a useless filler by-product of the LUMBER industry. Wellness and Eagle Pack are owned by a holding company, Berwind Industries, that sent the production of Elmer's SCHOOL Glue (you know, the kind used by young kids) TO CHINA!!! Wellness has HORRIBLE quality control. The store owner where I bought quit carrying it due to all the returned food from sick animals.
Don't forget euthanized animals, diseased, or dead animals are also in the pet foods... I've heard the best food to feed pets is natural... (Human healthy food too)
Ya, the ingredients they listed are not horrors at all. Brains are extremely nutritious. Bird beaks and feathers are fine but not when they make up the majority of the food as is the case when by-product is the first ingredient. The horror is that the ingredients often come from diseased or dead animals.
I feed my pets a variety of quality natural foods, wellness being one of them.
@samuraiyao Actually, I maybe spend $20 or so a month in raw meats. Do you have an Asian market in your area? There's your gold mine. They sell all kinds of cheap meats.
We went with raw meat diet, so we know what our dogs are eating. By the way, raw fed dogs eat brains, feet, etc. Nothing wrong with a dog eating a bird beak if it's a fresh bird.
Wellness uses Chinese taurine and synthetic vitamins and minerals to boot. I won't buy their food. Natura is better but too much grain. Eagle Pack uses corn which is nutritionally worthless and causes skin allergies. Any dog food involved in recall past or present won't get my business. If any filler (pomace, potato, tapioca, or any other grain is high on the list of ingredients) it is a worthless kibble.
@rctriplefresh5 : If I use a kibble, which I rarely do, I use Castor & Pollux Organix. My preferred food is Primal Pet Food which makes frozen formulas. It's not cheap but neither are our friend's lives.
@flagwaver1969 not that i've heard of! i've been working in the pet industry for 4 years now... and I personally know the head rep of the Natura company. What site where you looking on?
@kbug861 : I never said Natura had a recall. They are one of the better companies that produce kibbled dog foods, but in my opinion they use too much grain. I had Evo mixed up with Evolve which was a cat food that was recalled.
Eagle Pack seems ok. They do contain Oatmeal which is not good. Well it's not for cats. I have a cat so I researched food on cats. I don't know if dogs can have oatmeal. But their main ingredients are meat. Like if it says duck, it's duck! Overall, there is probably better, but it seems decent. If you research on the internet you can find out how to find out if a brand is good. For my kitten, about the best I've found is EVO, so you might want to look at their dog food too!
THE FOOD IS FIXED NOW! WELLNESS IS AN AMAZING BRAND AND DON'T USE THAT BONE EXCUSS ANY MORE! MuttDogLover88 YOU ARE SO RIGHT WELLNESS IS FINE NOW! Animals can digest bones anyway!
Orijen and Acana, that's all i'm saying, good stuff, look it up.

I like natura's products ( they have quite a few lines of dog food ) I was feeding canidae for a bit but my dog never did well digesting it.

@ryansur : Eagle pack is a good food, however there is even better. Dogs/cats dont need grains, it's just a way of binding the food.
@fifimsp: it's ok for dogs to have oatmeal. EVO is one of the best!
