We had one weekend where they baptised over 600 people. Hard to believe but it happened. |
When Hurricane Katrina hit we built frames and walls for about 20 houses in our parking lot in Louisville, loaded them on semi trucks, drove them down to New Orleans and assembled them on-site. All without ANY gov't aide.
We have had volunteer days when literally thousands of members show up and go out to schools, churches and homes around town. Just to lend a helping hand.
I started attending SECC around '94 and have been an active member ever since. Back then we were in a "smaller" building that "only" held about 2200 people (compared to 9100 here). While it's not a perfect church (show me one that is) it is definitely an awesome awesome church. I have no family in Louisville other than my wife and kids and there were a few times in between jobs when I considered taking a job out of town but always stayed in Louisville because of SECC.
i love this church i go here for sunday school the pastor is great he even came to my grandmas funeral and he didnt even know her also i saw the easter pagent
Easter pageant!!!!!!!!!!!! the best thing in the whole world it shows how anyone can be involved with Christ and how he loves EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
God bless this church. It will be an amazing event when that day comes when Jesus will save His people from the days of wrath; and I'm sure SECC will be one of those churches...;)) Godbless brothers and sisters at Southeast.
To those who have commented and tried quoting scripture. Your problem isn't with Southeast, your problem is with your relationship with Jesus Christ. If you put your faith in 'man' or a church you will be sorely disappointed every time. Jesus says, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except thru me". That means your venue to heaven isn't based on where you attend. Southeast has for 44 years withstood the criticism and comments people have made about it. Yet it
I attend Southeast nd I am very active there. I am infuriated by all of these ppl who r bashing it. I just have one question for all of u: why do u all think these things about my church?
Mega- Church is nothing new The first believers were 3000. Acts. It's not the size of a Church its the faithfulness to the word and to Ministry. Stop arguing of the size and worry about it's teaching.
The money changers were cheating people and others were charging to much also cheating. There is nothing wrong with selling a product in the church. Learn the bible or be quiet.
Um, didn't the bible talk about Jesus going into the temple and throwing out the money changers? they have a coffee shop there, a book store there? HYPOCRITES!
I've attended large and small churches all over the country, and the spirit of service love and worship at Southeast Christian Church is truly unique. This is a church who has started dozens of other congregations over the years, and they utilize their current campus to it's full potential in ministering to the souls and hearts of any who wish their help. This church is led by men wh understand the purpose of the church is to reach souls for Christ. It isn't about bank accounts!
many believe that just because it's a big church that they tend to focus more on money rather than worship... I have been attending southeast for about 10 years and now attend the southern indiana campus. Southeast is the farthest thing from greedy. They don't compete with other churches. I've been to many churches across the country and Southeast is the most uplifting and comforting, holy place I have ever been to. It's so peaceful and you really feel God's presence there. God bless all...
i dare anyone to check out this church for a month, the building can be overwhelming, but they use it as much as they can for building up their people, other churches, and God's Kingdom, some of the best preachers in the country are there, there's a reason they are a large church, they also do countless amounts of work in Louisville....i dont even attend there, but have talked to plenty who have, great stuff
i go to this church and im a member. this church has guided me to becoming a better christian. this church is not about money or publicity. we connect people to jesus and to one another. if someone thinks that we are only about money. then they obviously havent attended a service. i will now and forever be a slave to the greatest kuros(master) ever, Jesus. i will willingly die to keep his name alive. this church is a large part of our community. this is one of the best things to happen to us.
Simply horrifying....I had to attend a memorial service at this "church" and I left the building almost nauseous....It's like someone took a concourse at Atlanta Hartsfied Airport and turned it into a church....it has the same "warmth" of a large airport terminal....I was seriously expecteding to see rental car facilities there.
This is all about money.....and siphoning away younger tithe-paying members from local, community churches....
Is this church large? Yes. But it is not impersonal at all. Try returning for a weekend service and see how warm and spirit filled the service is. Most mega churches are places to get lost in; however, Southeast has so many groups and programs to help make people feel connected, and it gives it better than a small church feel. It gives it a family feel. For we are all part of the family of God. Come and worship with this church family, and feel their giant hug of acceptance.
I wonder, if Jesus, our Lord and Saviour, the passion of our lives, who inspires to live lives of holiness, who Himself when on earth was homeless, lived a beggar life, was a pennyless carpenter, whose best friends were the unclean, prostitutes, the tax collectors, intended for this 9,200 seat building and it's ministry structure to be a church model.
I hope this doesnt seem rude, but im a member of a "mega church" and to say that it doesnt sem like a church is ridiculous. We are blessed enough to have to the ability and resources to reach people in ways that smaller churches cannot. Im not saying its better to go to a mega church because small churches are awesome. They can be more personal for a person, but dont bash mega churches for what they may seem to be. These churches are doing a great job of making the name of Jesus famous.
Hi! Thanks for your response. Don't read too much into my over all comments. They were used as point of discussion for my board - resulting in some great visioning. God is great!
I have to say a resounding........ YES!!! If this church was not blessed by Christ, it would not have grown from 50 people to almost 20,000 in about 40 years while starting several other churches who also run over 1000 members. The church is based on the gospel of Christ. It is also dedicated to serving those in need. The building is huge, but so is the need. The leadership is dedicated to remaining accountable to Christ, and they are not hung up on material things but use they to help!
Certainly there are likely many thousands who attend this church that are involved in active ministry - however I wonder if the over all proportion of those actively serving in significant ways is likely much less than found in a smaller gathering of believers.
I wonder if it would earier to attend a church of 9000 people rather than a church of under 300 people.
I wonder if it is more challenging to be part of a smaller church because people tend to know you at a deeper level (outside of one's care group or small group). I wonder if one feels more obligated or perhaps challenged to a great degree to be more active in ministry or service in a smaller church than you would be at SECC.
It is more difficult to be a member of a smaller church because of the petty church politics. I was married to a minister who served in small churches for 10 years. I left the church when we divorced. It was the petty church politics that caused the problems in our marriage, and it damaged my faith. Southeast doesn't show the petty stuff. What you see if worship and service in Christ. They have man programs to help the church 'feel smaller' without the junk of a small church.
Would there be more entry points into the community, one's province, country or ever the world for that matter for ministry and outreach? You can still be one church - with many campuses of worship and places of fellowship and equipping.
I wonder if renting facilities that are flexible to changing needs would be better than sinking tens of millions of dollars into buildings. I wonder if freeing up such capital and releasing it into ministry outreach, resources and equipping would have a larger impact on the world.
Sounds like a lack of commitment to the cause. One of the things 'sinking the tens of millions of dollars' into the various church Southeast has started does is help the body feel they are part of the church. It keeps them committed ot helping the church grow and thrive. Think about home ownership verses renting? Who tends to care more for the place they live? Who invests more into the place? Who sticks around longer?
When I see a church building that seats 9,200 people, and the vast capital that must have taken to build such a facility and the ongoing site developments, I have to wonder how much more of an impact such a church could have within their city and ultimately the world if they divided the church community into worshipping bodies of no more than 300 people - and let their congregations grow from that point.

They have!!!! Several times!!! In 1998, the congregation voted to split in half or stay together to build the current building. It was 100% to stay together! 100% of thousands of people. We can't come close to that in an election for president or any other type of vote. This church has started numerous churches, and they support many other congregations around the area. Call Bob Cherry at Northeast Christian or Dave Hamlin at Shelbyville Christian.
Look at this video and let me know what you think whether church should become like this? We will be looking at this video with our church leadership team next week as a point of discussion. I do understand that this church has a significant impact within their city and within the world. I certainly do not want to take away from that. However, some questions can still be raised.
I live within the Louisville Metro area and have attended Southeast Christian several times for different services. I belong to a church of less than 200 members. The first time I attended SEC I was really nervous. I prayed about whether or not to return and for some reason God continued to lead me back. This place may be big and intimidating but it was built by God for God. I have not one complaint about the place. Every church has its problems....they are full of sinners!
Thanks for your awesome response!! My comments were for discussion purposes for our church board - this led to some great visioning for our church board.
While vision is great........ Southeast was built on love of Christ first. The buildings are great, but it isn't what makes the church grow. It is what happens within the walls that does that. Checking out the Church Leadership Seminar would be a much better use of your church leaderships time than just viewing a video of the structure. The structure is not the church. It is the house. The home is the heart that beats within the worship and care groups.
This is a most amazing church facility I have ever seen. I have been inspired to use this video as an opportunity to discuss with my church board what should church be. I am going to paste what I placed in my blog for discussion purposes.
All I know is that Southeast has a mission statement to connect people to Jesus and to one another. They preach that the bible is the inspired word of God. The Bible teaches that the church is not a building. We as Christ's followers are the church. So if you think that Jesus cares about the size of a church, your heart is no where near where Jesus wants it to be. 1Samuel 16:7 "man looks at the outward appearance. God looks at the heart" I am still a slave to Christ no matter the church
Its easy to criticize SECC. Go there, first. Find out the difference they are making. I'd bet dollars to donuts that this church of 18,000 members spends proportionally about the same on their buildings and staff than most churches of 180. And, they invest their money and their time in lessening the suffering of people at home and abroad. Before you cast stones, just take a moment and find out what they're really all about, please. Oh, and I don't attend Southeast. I live in Michigan.
I am a full time employee of the SECC. I see things that make me cringe. I am not short on criticism of ALOT of things that go on in the church. But the reality I always come back too is that there are alot of members working with the church with passionate hearts for ministry. The Passion for example is made up and some of the most sincere people sacrificing months of their lives for Christ. Not to mention the mission department at SECC is top notch and dedicated to spreading the gospel.
I live in another country but when I return to visit my hometown, I make sure I also attend SECC. It is amazing to be in such a large congregation, all worshiping God...and to feel that love flow over you and everyone. It is really something! If I ever return to Louisville to live, I'll go to SECC...and not because it's a "cool" church. Cool has nothing to do with it.
An absolutely disgusting display of importance of wealth and anyone that thinks differently can point me to the bible passage where this sort nonsense is considered acceptable. A will call window? This church is pathetic and should have it's tax exempt status removed. In a world where people's lives are crumbling this church and it's cult of personality leader bring in 200K+ per week to keep the baptism pool comfortably heated and the lights on in their Embassy Suites of God. Shame on SECC
in all fairness the will call is for the tickets for the easter passion play, not for regular services. but i do agree with you on your other points, southeast is a place i would never attend regular services at. many families i know, mostly from CAL, go it it for the simple reason that it is "the cool church" to go to.
I have been a member of SECC for 10 years and have been involved in the backstage choir for the Passion (formerly Pageant) for 5. That will call window is only there during the Passion for people to come pick up their tickets. And the pricing of the tickets is way cheap. We don't make a single penny off it. The point of the Passion it to spread the story of God's love. We don't heat the baptismal and all the things you're seeing up at the front of the sanctuary are just temporary for the Passion
Importance of wealth? Hardly!!! The Will Call Window is only for the Easter Passion Play because there are limited seating! Do they charge, yes. Do they make money off of it? NO!!! The church absorbs over $1 Million of the cost, and this is with 750 volunteers helping! This is a church dedicated to service. Members who give to their church because it ministers to them without harping on tithing sermons. They only have 1 a year!!! This churches only greed is wanting to save every soul!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
How very sad Christ must be when he see's so many resources spent on a vain building. It brings to mind what someone once told me was the shortest verse in the bible, "Jesus wept". You should be ashamed
The focus of SECC has always been on Jesus. Southeast spends more on missions each year than many churches even GENERATE in a year. Just as Jesus looks at our hearts rather than our looks, don't judge the ideals of a church (which was built because the last building was outgrown) based on what the exterior looks like. I suggest you visit and see for yourself the way Southeast continues to glorify God. It's been instrumental in my life, and with 18000+ members, it must be doing something right.
We had been going to Southeast since the beginning of last year until we moved out of state to Florida. We really miss our church every single day. It is the best church ever and it is where I was immersed. God Bless Southeast.
We were at Southeast Christian Church for five wonderful years! We left there 9 months ago because we relocated to a different state... Oh, how we miss it!!! My family were very involved in tech. It was the best times of our lives!!! Thanks for the video of home.

A) how many of the tithers give as a tax dedution or to look good for business contacts thererather then being sincere?..
B) Its not jsut tithing, its the bookstore ads, havint to pay to go on missions..you ahve to be rich for that
C) every business has a loss leader ..the passion is jsut the one for southeast
D) If you are poor you can alwasy volenteer opening doors forthe rich
